What is your budget? $600 max
What is your resolution? Unsure
What are you using it for? Gaming, mainly WoW and Starcraft 2 on lowest settings
What is your upgrade cycle? As long as I can get
When do you plan on building it? As soon as possible
Do you plan on overclocking? No
Do you need an Operating System? No
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No
Where are you buying your parts from? Newegg.ca or other places if they are better
Any help appreciated! Thanks.

Just received my new computer! I5 2500k with the CM Hyper 212. I overclocked it to 4.0ghz this afternoon, and Im running Prime95 right now.the temps are 57 62 64 61. Does it look high for such a small OC ?

That looks a bit high to me as a guess, but it depends on the voltage, case airflow, ambient temperatures, and so on--as well as how properly you mounted it and whether or not you applied the thermal paste correctly.
If you left voltages to "auto" it might have been bumped up (probably unnecessarily) when you increased the frequency.

Wait until tonight when NCIX's new sale starts and a configuration will be made for you.

Depends on voltage and ambient temperature. It's an okayish load temperature I guess.

Seeing as my i7 930 runs closer to 70C than 60C @3.8 under load with that cooler, it doesn't seem too terribly unreasonable. You could probably get a higher OC at similar temps though, with manual voltages.
My CPU is more power hungry and lower stock speeds, after all. And it's running right around where it should be.

Ambient temperature must around 25, NCIX built the computer for me, so I would guess its all installed correctly. On CPU-Z the core voltage is at 1.044V

That's idle voltage. You need to check voltage during prime95 or load. I will be very surprised if that's what it's at for 4GHz... If that's what it is at 4GHz, overclock it further.

Shit, if it's running that voltage at 4GHz, sell it on ebay for 4-5x what you spent on it.

Hmm Prime95 is running right now, I have RealTemps and CPU-Z running next to it and the only indication on voltage I have is from CPU-Z (Core Voltage) wich is at 1.044V am I looking at the wrong thing ?
If I overclock it further I fear it will probably get in the 70s though :S

Is this a manual or auto / manual offset? Holy cow... 70c and even low 80c is fine for a prime95.
|
I think its at auto, I need to check, Ill stop prime55 for now and check into Bios. Ill edit when I know
Edit : Weird, my bios says my Vcore is at 1.320....
My Dynamic Vcore is at Auto QPI/Vtt is auto Graphics DVID Auto PCH core Auto

I hit 70C under P95 load, and that doesn't bother me at all, and I'm kind of temp paranoid, because I live in Texas, and ambients here suck.
Seriously, you should see how far you can push that chip, you may be able to flip that CPU for a good chunk of change if you wanted to.

I (we all?) would still really like to know what the VCore is when running Prime95, though (especially if it's set to Auto in BIOS). For me, CPU-Z updates kind of slow sometimes, maybe have another program by its side like HWMonitor.

I see, I`ll try. Ill take it slow though just because its my first overclock... I enabled/disabled things ive seen in Guides and just played with the Clock ratio

Like I said, I let Prime55 run for about 1h30, and Vcore was at 1.044 all that time... Checking in the bios after stopping Prime, it was 1.320... Something must be wrong with CPU-Z

Uhm, well, with Vdroop, or the sandy bridge equivalent, that 1.32 is probably a max voltage, instead of an actual.
But seriously, there's generally people willing to pay an assload for high quality silicon.
|
Ha. I see. I have no idea then, shoud I set a Vcore or let it at auto ? Theres actually no place to change the V core in my Bios... Ive only found what I listed in an earlier post :
Dynamic Vcore QPI/Vtt Voltage Graphics DVID PCH core
@ JingleHell : Haha well I might aswell keep it and try to use it to its full potential!
|
Dynamic vcore sounds like Vcore with a forced Vdroop, to me. But that's at best a semi-educated-ish guess, I've never played with sandy bridge.
I hate retarded BIOS settings. But yeah, a "Dynamic Vcore" sounds like a max vcore setting, and then it just pulls what it needs. Sounds iffy for function at higher OCs, if I'm guessing right though.
If I am right though, you can probably get a lot higher OC on air, and probably to the point that the CPU really would be worth some money. But again, that's just what some people would do. I'd probably keep the thing myself.
|
Yeah it must be that, also if its not at auto, the other options I have are only increments. (+0.200, +0.205 etc...)
Edit : Wow I just run CPU-Z WITHOUT P95 this time, and the Vcore is exactly the same... (1.044) I guess CPU-Z doesnt update it well or something...

Your BIOS sounds like it was designed by chipmunks. One of the best reasons to spend more on a motherboard.
