This is my first foray into PC building. Now, the thing is, I am very good at PC repairs (have even repaired broken fans and the like on laptops) so I'm not worthless, but I am deathly afraid of compatibility issues and plain out forgetting something.

What is your budget?

$2k, its flexible.

What is your resolution?

IDK. 21" or so. I do not need a large monitor.

What are you using it for?

The only taxing thing is likely to be gaming (is that even taxing anymore?). Perhaps some coding and 3d graphing but usually that is not too memory intensive.

What is your upgrade cycle?

2-4 years

When do you plan on building it?

1-2 weeks.

Do you plan on overclocking?

Nay, this sounds too ambitious.

Do you need an Operating System?

Currently have an unused Windows 7 64 bit Ult

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

?

Where are you buying your parts from?

I figured Newegg, perhaps there are other American sources to buy from, but I am no expert.

Basically, I am thinking i7 + 8(12? GB) Ram surrounded by other things.

There is like no way to even spend close to $2k without overclocking or getting a good screen.

No rational way, you mean. It's easy to do, otherwise. RAID SSDs, GTX 590, $120 full tower, corsair H100 (Because water cooling is so PRO man), audiophile sound card for no good reason...

are there any negatives to getting a microatx mobo? i.e. the asrock z77 pro3 and z77 pro4m are the same price, and i don't see any difference except for the 4 being micro?

Hi, I'm looking to buy a new system within the next 2-4 weeks and could use some input. I have done some research already, but still have some questions (see below).

TL;DR: Need overclocked but still quiet setup for gaming and Ram-intensive work for 1500€ max!

First the standard form:

What is your budget?
1500 Euros max, but hopefully not needed entirely

What is your resolution?
1920x1080 (will use 2 monitors, but only 1 for gaming)

What are you using it for?
Gaming (SC2, Diablo3, Bioware/Bethesda games, Civilization, possibly some shooters too), programming (VS 2010 mostly), running 2-3 VirtualMachines with 3-4gb RAM at once. Probably have to zip/unzip 30-50gb files twice a week. MSSQL and MySQL Servers.

What is your upgrade cycle?
At least 2, probably 3+ years. Possibly upgrading Graphics sooner if 3+

When do you plan on building it?
2-4 Weeks

Do you plan on overclocking?
CPU: yes (see question below)
Graphics: possibly

Do you need an Operating System?
No

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
No

Where are you buying your parts from?
probably www.mindfactory.de (got my last 3 PCs there, low prices, fast delivery, good service)

Extra infos:
- USB 3.0 is a must-have.
- PC will be hooked up to TV
- probably don't need Bluray on PC, got a PS3 for that

What I picked out so far, prices as of right now:
CPU: i7 2600k or Ivybridge variant (see below)
Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 (€ 64)
Mainboard: ASRock Z77 Pro4 (€ 100)
RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance LowProfile 4x 4GB DDR3-1600 (€ 90)
PSU: 620W Seasonic M12II-620 80+ Bronze (€ 85)
Graphics: Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 2GB (€ 290)
Case: Antec P280 (€ 118)
SSD: 128GB Crucial m4 (€ 120)
HDD: 2TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 (€ 100)
DVD: some 20 € thingy

Total about 1260 €, so quite a bit below my max budget

Questions / Thoughts:

CPU / Overclocking / Temperature / Noise: I was planning to do slight - medium OC on the cpu, like 4.5Ghz on a 2600k at most. I figured I would get an Ivy-CPU since I was waiting for money anyway, but according to some reviews (which I found in various threads in this forum), the Ivy doesn't oc quite as well as the Sandybridge CPUs. Now with a good heatsink, 4.5 would probably still be achievable, but I am also looking to keep the noise level down as much as possible (especially idle, don't care that much about noise under load), which might become a problem in a "silent" case with Ivy's higher temperatures.
Specifically I was looking at the Antec P280 case with Noctua NH-D14 cooler here.
So my question: Should I play it safe and go with the 2600k, or will the Ivybridge variant be able to handle this while staying relatively quiet without overheating? Or should I even max out my budget and go with a socket2011 CPU etc?
Or is it just too early to tell?

Graphics Card: Pretty much the same as above, noise/temperature levels while still offering high performance. I figured performance-wise a HD7870 (maybe trying to oc to the same specs as the sold oc-version) should be good enough for the next few years at 1080p, or should I go higher and get myself the (apparently very good and even quieter and cooler) 7950? Also, which brand should fit my needs best? I figured Sapphire was a safe bet, but obviously I'm wide open for any input on this matter.
Also: My 2 screens both only have VGA/DVI ports. This will probably be a problem since 7xxx generation generally only offers one DVI port. I'm guessing I can't hook up one screen on the card and one to the cpu-gpu? Any suggestions here, or should I get myself a new screen?

PSU: Maybe overkill, even with OC? 520W version would be 10€ less.

Mainboard: No idea honestly, especially with the Z7x stuff. Just picked one that seemed to fit my needs.

RAM: I think I should be fine with 16gb, 8 will definitely fall short with more than one VM (using 3-4gb each) running. 32 should be overkill, but I'm still considering it with the current prices (should be about 200€ for 4x8gb). Speed no idea, I know 1600 isn't worth it for gaming, but with my needs it might be more noticeable?

HDD: Since VMs will be on there, HDD needs to be a 7200 i think?

SSD: Crucial seems to be very reliable and also quite cheap, but performance-wise offers lower numbers than others. Is this noticeable enough to warrent a not-that-reliable-and-more-expensive drive?

I guess thats it, thanks in advance guys!

Consolidated Ivy Bridge review links: http://www.overclock.net/t/1247353/various-intel-ivy-bridge-reviews

I would get Ivy Bridge and expect to OC to 4.5GHz at most. You may want to consider the Thermalright Silver Arrow instead of the NH-D14, it cools the same at slightly lower noise level (or better at the same noise level if you use the Low Noise or Ultra Low Noise adapters on the NH-D14).

1600 MHz RAM is fine, just make sure it's 1.5V. RAM speed gains are minimal, but 1600 costs very little over 1333, and gains over 1600 are extremely negligible in pretty much all programs and games.

Mobo should be fine.

You can indeed get the 520W version of PSU and it would still be plenty of overkill (the fan will always run at a very low speed).

For the graphics card, I can't tell you if it will be quiet because I don't know which model heatsink the one you selected has. 7870 is fine for 1080p 60Hz gaming. Can max or nearly max pretty much everything.

EDIT: About the screens: hook one up via DVI and the other with a passive HDMI->DVI adapter. Don't use VGA (I originally misread your post, thought one of your monitors was VGA only). Womwomwom (and others) can probably chime in here.

I would get a 7200RPM HDD no matter what. Just in case you ever want to actually install programs to it and not wait a lot more for a 5400/5900 RPM drive to load. It shouldn't be audible inside the P280 anyway.

The answers to most of your Tech Support questions are in the OP. That's why you're not getting a reply. It's been answered before. Read the OP.

Regarding Ivy Bridge it seems like in SC2 (and presumably most CPU games), it has about a 5% increase in performance. But there was one major exception: a MASSIVE increase in performance benefits for Shogun 2:Total War (the i5-3570k at stock narrowly beat the i5-2500k overclocked to 5.0ghz). The review guessed it had something to do with the instruction tweaks Intel made.

The game performance page in the Bit Tech review:
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2012/04/23/intel-core-i7-3770k-review/7

Interesting to note that in some rare applications Ivy Bridge may be a major improvement. The heat issue for overclocks doesn't seem like a big deal for 95% of overclockers who aren't looking to go above 4.5ish, so the only downsides for Ivy Bridge seems to be for people who want to heavily push an overclock or a higher price tag than Sandy Bridge. We'll have to see how long Sandy Bridge specials continue.

Can the non K models of ivy bridge be undervolted?

What is the price difference between the i5k and non k? Non k models can still be overclocked by fsb right?

Isn't that a given? The non-K variants just don't have an unlocked multiplier. You can still overclock with the turbo boost multiplier and base clock.

The difference between a 3570k and 3550 is going to be like $20, similar to a 2500 and 2500k. Ivybridge equivalents actually have a lower MSRP than Sandybridge.

Hi, I'm putting together a PC for my sister.

What is her budget?

Not sure, but the cheaper the better. Is it possible for under 700$ ?

What is your resolution?

Not sure, the monitor she uses is quite old, but she might get a new one. In any case, it won't be a ridiculously high res.

What are you using it for?

She will use it mainly for photoshop and maybe a few games like d3. It doesn't need to be able to do much more than that.

What is your upgrade cycle?

She will probably use it until it breaks down completely.

When do you plan on building it?

Asap

Do you plan on overclocking?

No

Do you need an Operating System?

Yes. (probably win7)

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

No

Where are you buying your parts from?

Probably NCIX like last time, I live in Canada. (they have a sale atm!)

Thank you for any help !

Thanks Skyr, but only the graphics card link seems to work, the others just lead me to the main page. I checked the parts themselves though, I don't see the promo on the i5 2400, the mobo is listed at 53$ but when I add to cart it shows the regular price of 58$, the ram seems to be sold out, I see the psu for 30$, but again when I add it to cart, it shows the full price of 75$.

Are the promos over ? I went all the way to the checkout to see if they would update the prices with the sale's prices but it didn't seem to change. Am I doing something terribly wrong ?

All the links work for me.

The power supply adds to cart for $45. The motherboard adds to cart for $53.

Core i5 2400 price can be found on sale page or pricematched.

Most of these promos don't end until the 25th or 30th.

What about people that have no clue about computers so obviously can't put it together. Are there any $600 options for a decent rig?

You can watch the hardware canucks build guide on youtube and realize that it's actually only slightly more difficult than changing a tire?

I dunno about in USA, but most if not all internet computer stores have a kit you can order so that they assemble it for you for a fee (usually around 50$). Will still be a lot cheaper and better than getting any branded computer. And building a computer isn't exactly rocket science. You don't even need to read a manual, screws are obvious and (most) cables are failsafe. Just be careful with CPU pins and everything should go smooth.

care to dumb it down for us noobs?

what i understood is that the ivy bridge doesn't overclock as well as sandy. and if you want to tweak it, it gets extremely hot (i.e. needs advanced cooling)?

so for people like me, that planned to overclock an i5 very casually (as in, maybe just up to low to mid 4's with sandy), would it be better to get the i5 ivy equivelant and just overclock it a tinnny bit?

find this stuff interesting, but always helps when someone knowledgable can explain these dense articles.

ive doing alot of reading to help decide what my next upgrade should be. what i've discovered:

most people clock their SBs to 4.5ghz - 4.6ghz with nominal voltages and mid-high temps (65-75c).
pushing to 4.8 and beyond requires much more voltage and results in much higher temps. it also seems to rely on the quality of the specific chip. a handful can hit 5ghz, many cannot.

a 4.5ghz ivy will very much outperform a 4.5ghz sb, with 1) much lower power consumption, but 2) around the same heat output.

you could technically go for either a sandy or ivy, but there's no reason not to go with ivy. only if sandys see a significant price drop would you think about buying one.

I think you mean to say similar temperatures. I don't see how you would have much lower power consumption (which almost all gets turned into waste heat) without lower heat output.

the only reason i waited for IB is just for potential (if any) price effects it would have on the SB chips. i already knew the performance jump wouldn't be too big of a deal. but if it's just $20 difference between a new IB and SB, i'm willing to go with the IB and Z77 just to future proof a little bit.

I actually am having more fun researching prices and stuff than i thought i would. i could picture myself being bummed out once I build the computer, if only for the fact that I won't have an excuse to waste all my time skimming the web for amazing deals.

LGA1155 is dead after this year. The only thing futureproof about Z77 is native USB3 which is literally useless for most people.
