When using this resource, please read FragKrag's opening post. The Tech Support forum regulars have helped create countless of desktop systems without any compensation. The least you can do is provide all of the information required for them to help you properly. |
What is your budget? 1500? More as needed. I do not need a fancy case, just something that works and has good air flow. Preferably something that won't slice me open if I need to open it from time to time.
What is your resolution? I would like support for two monitors; I do not need to buy the monitors. No more than 1920x1080.
What are you using it for? Personal computer. I would like to be able to play ME3 and Diablo III at max settings. Ideally I would like to be able to multitask with gaming, light office, web, streams, etc.
What is your upgrade cycle? Years
When do you plan on building it? asap
Do you plan on overclocking? EDIT I want to overclock but I do not want to do so at the expense of my processor's lifespan.
Do you need an Operating System? Yes
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? I would be happy to experiment with this. I have never had multipile GPUs.
Where are you buying your parts from? The only electronics store around here is TigerDirect. Either there or online; newegg I guess.
Preferably no loud parts. Either now or in the future I would like to have room for an SSD for the OS and a game or two. I need at least 4 USB ports and one PS/2.

Why do you people do this? What's the point of asking after purchasing? The components aren't ideal and you likely got ripped off but it'll be fine for running Starcraft II...
|
It was foolish of them to give you a build that you paid extra JUST for the ability to overclock when you have no will to overclock.
That processor was a waste of like 40 bucks of your money since its similar to an i5-2400 except yours can overclock.
The board was a waste since it has very few features besides the ability to overclock, but you probably paid like 40 bucks extra.
They gave you a shit PSU iirc. Probably hoping it'll break your shit so you go back to them for more computer stuff.
I don't see a CPU cooler listed (every overclocking build needs one). Not sure if they know what they are doing or if it is there it just wasn't mentioned.
1.1k was a huge ripoff unless it came with windows, monitor, keyboard and mouse. And maybe also a desk. Doubly so since a lot of money went into overclocking for a customer with no intentions to. As an aside, proper overclocking does NOT reduce lifetime.
That being said, yeah it'll run SC2 just fine.
EDIT: Im guessing that PSU is from Enhance Electronics. SkyR?

IMO they just feel the guilt after splurging too much, and they want someone to say "yes it's a good buy" to justify their (bad) purchase.

Greetings TeamLiquid.Net Build Resource Thread 0, this is The Captain speaking. I heard this was the place to come for StarCraft related information and your help is indeed needed. In particular, I am looking to build a new gaming platform that can handle streaming SC2 in HD.
We run our resolutions here at 1920x1080 and often use two or even three monitors at a time. In addition, there will be some recording and editing of SC2 replays as well live casting of show-matches. Sadly, resources at our current station are running low and we need to limit costs to under 1k USD and preferably even further. Further details included below.
Thank you for you kind help,

I think that GPU will be able to support 3 monitors, they still include a DVI - VGA adapter with these GPUs. Any monitors will be fine as long as it fits your budget.

If you want a case with sound dampening material than invest in nice case such as a Corsair 550D that you'll keep forever: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139012
You didn't mention what you need a PS/2 port for. The Asrock Extreme3 doesn't have a hybrid PS/2 port, only a keyboard one. So if you're using the PS/2 for the mouse than you'll need a different motherboard or use an adapter.
Overclocking within reason doesn't drastically decrease processor lifespan.
On April 10 2012 10:24 TelperionKaadu wrote:+ Show Spoiler +I am a future college student, and I would like to build my first computer. I know next to nothing about building computers, and because I was raised in a home with only macs, I know very little about computers in general. I would like to learn, and could use some help finding somewhere to start in picking out everything I need. Also, I would like to make this dual monitor, so please factor that in.
What is your budget? I would like to spend up to $1100, but it is no big deal if it goes over that.
What is your resolution? I do not think my resolution matters to much to me, I am willing to use anything, as long as it looks decent.
What are you using it for? I spend a lot of time on Starcraft, and that is the main purpose (gaming in general). But, I would also like it to be able to stream. I play a lot of other games, and it would be nice to be able to handle things like Skyrim.
What is your upgrade cycle? I am on a longer upgrade cycle I guess. I would like to spend more now, and not worry about upgrading it in the future.
When do you plan on building it? Ill be building it as soon as I can.
Do you plan on overclocking? I don't plan on overclocking as this is my first time, and I think I should play it safe until I better understand everything.
Do you need an Operating System? Yea, I guess I do need windows.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? I dont plan on anything, I am not sure what the added benefits to this is, so I am willing to do whatever.
Where are you buying your parts from? Newegg.
You mentioned you don't care what resolution you play on so I'm not sure if the budget includes a monitor...
You can use the above build as well and adjust as needed. You can downgrade to an Asrock P67 Pro3 if you have no intention of doing CrossfireX / SLI: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157230

Uh lemme see.
$1500 is a LOT of budget for what you are asking (can probably be met with like $700-$800). So I am not sure how you want to spend the remaining $800 since thats up to your personal life.
Additionally, Gaming on two monitors at the same time is silly, but I sort of get the idea you meant game on one monitor while having the other monitor open for other things.
Other than that your needs are pretty typical so you can look through the last few pages and try to find an exact build you need or want. Again your leftovers are plentiful so in the end its up to you how you want to approach this problem.
|
I am assuming PS/2 is for keyboard, the only item you want to be on PS/2.
I feel bad for Artisan because he JUST asked us on the last page for a build.

Both my monitors are high def and connect via HDMI, I do not think this will work. I need to be able to be able to watch a blu-ray (needs blu-ray drive) while playing Diablo III. That's why I was considering multiple GPUs.

Get an Asrock Z77 Pro3 if you want VGA support: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157297
Caviar Blue can be had at same price without the shipping fee at NCIX: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=58402
Any mid-tower to your liking will be fine. Of course there are some cases that are better than others in terms of tool-less features, USB3, dust filters, fans, and so on. Not sure what you mean by sleek but the Antec P280 might be a good option for $113: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=65170
Your DVD burner is overpriced, just get the least expensive one for $16 over at NCIX which happens to be an ASUS as well: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=49597&promoid=1101
If you're not purchasing by tomorrow than you likely won't see the Antec Neo Eco 450C at $35 again.
Radeon HD6850 is capable of playing Starcraft II smoothly on ultra at 1080p so that combo is fine.

Hey, can someone suggest a graphics card for me? I'll have a i3 2120 and I'll be wanting to game in 1920x1080. All I'll be using my rig for is gaming, and the card I'm currently looking at is this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814162079. I like this because I'll be using one new monitor at 1920x1080 with the DVI, but I'd like to still use my old monitor which uses VGA, and this card outputs to both. Thanks everyone!
|
A 6850 outperforms the 550 and costs less so there is no reason to buy a 550 ever. Usually cards come with VGA adapters.
