david kim was interviewed about sc2. i have no idea about the content of the interview is - i was hoping one of our korean loved ones could translate for us! (or, if after reading it and noting that it's not worth translating, report back with that!)
the interview can be found here: http://game.chosun.com/article/view.php?no=60676.

David Kim (korean name is Kim Tae-Hyun if anyone cares) is a korean developer working for Blizzard who has shown off skills rivaling pro gamers and has become a hot issue amongst gamers. He's one of the 50 key developers working on SC2.
He was born in Korea and did a degree in comp sci in vancouver, canada He went off to do balance designer work for Relic in company of heroes and warhammer 40000 (thanks FA) He's a balance designer for sc2. i.e. making all units in sc2 have a useful role in certain situations and making them easy to use in all games. Currently, the main goal is to complement each unit's unique traits to the race's traits.
Blizzard's strength is in being able to say your opinion equally. Every discussion is done freely without concern for who has what position. It has people with exceptional talent in each area as the main person. Also, each area has suitable people working in them.
He plays WoW ;; raising an undead mage Waiting for AION (thanks Pufftrees) to come out.
Current SC2 skills? #1 in the company ladder page. He believes that he'll soon be pushed back by korean gamers once the game comes out lol
He thinks blizzard focuses more on esports and relic focuses on working on introducing a variety of playstyles. *insert he thinks both companies are super duper awesome and he likes both of them*

I played DoWII just recently actually. I thought I was buying an RTS =( The single player plays like Diablo II and multiplayer feels like a more hectic DoTA O_o
I don't know, it was fun and strategies were easy to pick up on but for some reason they don't have that "easy to learn, hard to master" thing going on for Multiplayer. It was a bit more difficult to catch on.
Also the units just feel so slow.

mod edit: please be nice

im still not a big fan of relic games

Translated the interview part of the second interview
What do you do as a balance designer?
Although there is working on the whole production of the game, there is also working on each characteristics of races and multiple layers (?).
When did you start having interest in games? Can you explain why you chose to work for Blizzard?
In Super Famicom (?), I gained an interest in gaming while working on the Dragon Ball series. When I graduated from high school, I studied at Vancouver, Canada, and naturally I joined a game company. In the year 2007, I heard of the development of Starcraft 2 and I joined the company that I have always had interest in.
What do you think are Blizzard’s strengths while working there? Also, for those who want to be a balance designer in the future, what advice would you give?
The most fun aspect of working at Blizzard is that my interest involves the games made by Blizzard. The whole idea of living inside my interests makes it fun. When the most talented people of each division work together, it is very comfortable. While working, there is a lot of trust, and a lot of peace of mind. I also like that as a balance designer, I only have to concentrate on one matter. To be a balance designer, instead of thinking how to make the game simple, you should think of the characteristics, race differences and similarities, and the expansion of the game.
What kind of talented people do you think Blizzard wants? Honestly, I do not really know besides my job. However, I think the main consideration is skill. Of course there is a lot of teamwork so, regardless of (job) position, you need good understanding skills so that everyone will resolve the issue with the same agreement. I feel like these kind of people is what Blizzard wants.

I was promoted to Design.
I am now a Multiplayer Gameplay & Systems designer for a game we're (Relic) releasing in China called Company of Heroes Online. It's a RTS / MMO / Progression hybrid game.
It's actually really cool. It's like Company of Heroes and Magic the Gathering and Pox Nora combined.

Has anyone played Company of Heroes and the two expansions? It's not exactly the most balanced game out there. And from what I hear of the Warhammer rts, it kept getting more and more imbalanced with each new expansion.

Q: What about the two companies relrikgwa Blizzard?
ROFL.

So basically korean dudes are pretending they didn't understand what the NDA was and broke it so they could put out this interview early?
I like their style.

lol, omninmo's copy paste translation as well as his comment made me laugh so hard. Thanks, it got me off my tiring and depressive situation for a while. lol at the "leather" instead of "ladder"

David Kim did not work on COH all that much - he was supervisor for DOW balance team; i was supervisor for COH.
While the DOW Expansions did experience balance concerns, you need to keep in mind that it is not a direct reflection on the balancers. When something goes wrong in code, and the Far Seer becomes invincible, you need to note that that is a bug, and not a balance problem.
The last expansion for DOW was made by Iron Lore (not Relic), and so the initial balance of the game is hard to credit to the balance team. A difficult job in the smoothest of times, working via proxy and email makes it particularly tough. If you look at the latest patches to DOW however, they were incredibly well received.
Relic is a relatively new company that's still learning her way through the online space. Blizzard is an established monolith. David Kim will have the experience and talent behind him at Blizzard, and this bodes well for SC2.

It's been a long time since I've made a post but I've enjoyed this thread immensely and appreciate the translators and Mora's inside view into David Kim and game development.
Cheers!
