Hi everyone,
I built a daily StarCraft II esports grid game:
https://www.e-rankings.com/games/starcraft-2/grid/
The idea is similar to other grid games: each cell has to be filled with a player who matches both the row and column criteria. The grid updates daily at midnight CET.
Scoring is based on answer rarity. Correct answers that fewer other players have chosen are worth more points. You can also share your result after finishing the grid.
The game uses the E-Rankings database of StarCraft II players, tournaments, rankings, countries, races, results, prize pools and career stats. Even though the data set is large, there may still be missing or incorrect entries. If you notice a wrong answer, missing player, incorrect criterion or any bug, please let me know and I will fix/add it.
This is the first public version, so feedback on difficulty, scoring, criteria, missing features and overall usability would be very helpful.
Thanks, and I hope some of you enjoy testing it.
EDIT August 28th:
- Added hints. They will automatically be unlocked once you have two or more wrong guesses. They always point you to the answer given most often by other players before
- Added a live scoreboard while you're completing a grid showing your current points and rank
- There's an explainer text to all your guesses now telling you why a player you guessed matches the cell or not
- Added a tab to the grid that shows the most common answers of all players and where you rank with your answer
- The points for every answer are now calculated taking into consideration all answers from all players on all grids to measure more precisely how common your answer is. As usual you get more points for guessing players that haven't been guessed much before.
- For every 10 grid you complete, you get to choose one of tomorrows categories for the grid
- For every 25 grids you complete, you get a free hint at the next grid you play
- There's also a bunch of new categories. We're up to 80 different categories now.
EDIT June 27th:
- There is now a weekly leaderboard in addition to the daily leaderboard. It counts your five best grids out of the last seven days, so if you miss one or have a bad day, it's not so bad
- After finishing a grid, there is now a bunch of personal statistics about your daily and historic performance
- Together with this there is also some personal achievements like finishing a grid flawlessly, reaching a certain playing or success streak and so on
- If enough players have played a grid, extraordinary guesses will be unlocked like showing if you picked very rare player in a cell
- Duel-mode works correctly now, it had a bug before
- The statistics for duel-mode have been improved
- If you send a duel-link to other players and at least one of them finishes the grid, you get to pick/vote on a category for one of the next grids
- I changed the rules for grid creation a bit so there is less repetition in criteria and more unique rows and columns pop up more often
- Finally, 7 new criteria have been added with a focus on criteria that make you go beyond just guessing the current or historic best players for a lot of cells. In total there are 75 different rows and columns now
EDIT June 23rd:
- Daily leaderborard added
- Challenge mode added where you can challenge friends or foes to do the grid as well with a special link after finishing a grid and all of you will end up in a separate group ranking as well. It works also for all grids that you already finished (like older ones). If other people accept your challenge and finish a grid you will get a reward.

Nice! That was more intuitive than I expected. Wasn't sure of some of my answers but glad it worked out!

Hello, quite fun. However today one question is « reached top 20 » and there is no way to click on it to know what it means. Like, is it top 20 aligulac? Top 20 in a regional blizzard sponsor red tournament? Etc.

Also, saw only HerO and not able to select herO or differentiate with HerO (former TL protoss)

+ Show Spoiler +did you know that nestea has only won 5 tournaments in his career according to whatever database is being used here? that's insane and i couldn't believe it until i went straight into his liquipedia page
feels like the grid strat is to go straight to players with longevity/weekly tournament farmers

Hey, thanks for the feedback. I had a feeling the name of the category today might not be clear enough. Will change that for future grids so it's more obvious what is meant.
Concerning the HerO, herO, Hero (and don't forget about all the "Rain"s), will also find a solution for that. The current one was from an early version where you could just type in the name and press enter so to avoid people have to type "herO" correctly it just picks the correct player with that name that fits the category.

Thanks for the update, the ? / helper buttons are useful Difficult to score today since under 25 year old comes down to very few players in our old game And Similarly not many russians players won that much so most people picked the same players

This is definitely a fun game; you've done a great job! I did get a little bored after a while because a lot of the categories seem to repeat each day, so I would love to see more variety in the rows and columns. But overall, it's a very engaging activity for those who have been following the SC2 esports scene for a while.

Thank you for the feedback. Generally i am glad so many people like the game. I started with just a few categories so understandably they feel a bit repetitive quickly. I added 18 new categories today, two of which will be in tomorrows grid (we'll see about the other, since the grids are randomized obviously). I plan on adding more as time goes by, but if you have any ideas or wishes, let me know.
I also added some tweaks to the UI, especially you can see your own score, rank and other statistics better than before. I have a few ideas for more features, but it will take some time to implement them. Same here, if you have any suggestions, let me know.

I wonder how rarity percentage is calculated. If I can see 6 players filled today so far, and the cell states that 2.9% chose the player, then i guess it is not on daily base? Is it 'exact cell' specific? or how?
It would be even cooler if there was some daily/board score list for your insight once you filled the board.
|
Great thank you.
The daily leaderboard has been added (i guess you just noticed?)
I also added a "duel mode" where you can challenge friends or foes to do the grid as well with a special link after finishing a grid and all of you will end up in a separate group ranking as well. It works also for all grids that you already finished (like older ones).
Concerning your question about the rarity percentages: Every possible answer starts with a preset percentage to avoid that the first players of each grid get 0 or 100 points which would be no fun. But every player's answer immediately changes the percentages, so after a few people have played the presets don't play much of a role anymore

Awesome job! Thanks for the clarification, that makes sense.
I also liked today's a little bit more difficult board containing this 10y+ inactive category, which forces you to dig deeper in your memory.
Thanks!

Hey,
just wanna say thanks for everyone who has been playing the grid over the course of the past month. I added some new features:
- Added hints. They will automatically be unlocked once you have two or more wrong guesses. They always point you to the answer given most often by other players before
- Added a live scoreboard while you're completing a grid showing your current points and rank
- There's an explainer text to all your guesses now telling you why a player you guessed matches the cell or not
- Added a tab to the grid that shows the most common answers of all players and where you rank with your answer
- The points for every answer are now calculated taking into consideration all answers from all players on all grids to measure more precisely how common your answer is. As usual you get more points for guessing players that haven't been guessed much before
- For every 10 grid you complete, you get to choose one of tomorrows categories for the grid
- For every 25 grids you complete, you get a free hint at the next grid you play
- There's also a bunch of new categories. We're up to 80 different categories now
Let me know if you would like to see any other features. And have fun.
