Looking at the list of premier events, the only other players I didn't remember as having been champions were uThermal and Ret ![]()

I’m struggling to recall the opponent, think it was a GSL game and Ace played this absolutely bonkers PvZ. Warp prism harass all over the place, splitting his armies up, going toe to toe in a straight-up macro game and using the mommaship well. If not before players like HerO were doing that, it was certainly before it was common and fleshed out. The crazy part is you’re almost not exaggerating, he really would look that damn good sometimes, and it often was just a single game!

He was famous for a fantastic TvT build, the spoon-terran style and retiring to become a doctor. Too bad he lost some a lot of opportunities to BL-infestor bs, otherwise he would likely have won more.

Serral has many forgettable championships because he won so much other shit. So several of serral's championships are easily forgotten. it's easy to remember the world championships n shit, but what about his idk 3rd homestory cup? 4th dreamhack?

The thread is about players, not tournaments. Here are a few premier tournament winners which rang no bells for me: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

It was hard to win say, Code A no doubt, but that was clearly a second tier event versus Code S. Nonetheless, a fun trip down memory lane. It’s interesting to see names, and ponder why some of them became the SC equivalent of one-hit wonders, where others were able to stick around and make pretty meaningful runs. Someone like Puzzle sort of emerged and looked really good for a bit and then didn’t do much again, got to the cusp of being really good but never really broke through. Or even a jjakji who while being an unfancied underdog in his Code S run, also looked legit in that run, and indeed at the time that was probably the best Code S final we’d seen. I guess part of it is the sheer volume of pretty damn good players we used to have.

Jjakji also had a second act where he got top 4 in some Dreamhacks/WCS Eu in 2014 and even qualified for Blizzcon 2014, so he wasn't a true one-hit wonder (even if EU was by far the easiest region to qualify from in 2013-2014 because online qualifier lag kept many Koreans out.) An interesting question is who's the best player to never win a liquipedia premier tournament. Maybe Byul? He got 3 star league runner ups in 2015, a WCS Americas runner up in 2013, plus a few other deep runs as well as being a good team league player.

Good shout, it’s hard to think of players who haven’t got at least one. Byul is probably top, perhaps Jaedong is up there? Bunch of runners-up including a WC and some other consistently high placements, but IIRC he didn’t take one home. Bunny has had a pretty good career without grabbing one.

I remember jaedong winning Asus rog I think I'd count that as premier. Byul never winning though is super sad. He was a bit of a Kong. I remember seeing him crying after getting 2nd place in GSL.
