I like your cautious optimism. The philosophy of Microsoft's game development team is different than Activision's. So, the possibility for SC3 exists, but it's probably not likely.
Skill is relative.

Phil Spencer did specifically name drop Starcraft as an IP he wants to invest in so who knows.

I’m hoping for, Starcraft Flight Simulator, to be released.

Honestly I don't think we need SC3 or even Stormgate. As BW fanboy I still think that SC2 has by far the BEST engine, animations and graphics. They need to continue supporting SC2 and Remastered. New coop commander? Bring it on. New Nova campaign? I'll try it. New skins? Why not. Just continue support bit by bit, I'm 100% sure people will support and buy new DLCs.

I gotta agree. SC2 is in a very impressive state and looks amazing. But SC3 will be healthy for growth.

I’m kinda unsure why they stopped, and stopped doing things like War Chests. By all means strip it down to bare bones but there’s surely still a decent demand and return for it

The profitability of sc2 was discussed in thr investor calls. What it boiled down to, is that investing a dollar in candy crush, warcraft or call of duty would yield higher return than investing a dollar in starcraft.
Its not that starcraft wasnt profitable, but the other options were more profitable, so starcarft was rationalized.

Instead of SC3, I'd prefer SC2 be fixed and patched so that it can take advantage of modern CPUs. It's still single threaded and can benefit from a multi-thread update. Fixing the balance and taking more control of its esports division like how Riot and Valve takes control of their esports would be nice too. These updates may help attract newcomers to the scene and new professional gamers. Right now, we have little to no new professional gamers while League of Legends and CS:GO/CS2 constantly attracts new talent.

Instead of having just one tournament circuit like ESL Pro Tour, it'd be nice to have a league for players who are not as skilled. A tier 2 circuit as they call it.

Even with some Microsoft execs hinting at revisiting the StarCraft IP, I think it's highly unlikely we get a StarCraft sequel in the 'true' lineage of BW/SC2. Maybe some console-friendly RTS that appeals to a more general audience, but probably not the kind of game hardcore BW and SC2 fans are looking for.

What I AM huffing some hopium over is Brood War and StarCraft II getting some table scraps as a side effect of a new StarCraft game. Maybe Blizzard/MS is paranoid from their experience with War3: Reforged, where the hardcore community was at the forefront of leading a larger wave of horrible PR? They may think it's in their interest to curry favor with the hardcore SC community ahead of a new title. Maybe there could be some minor shifting of personnel around Classic Games so there's are more people involved with StarCraft. We're at such a bare minimum support level right now that even ONE more person having BW/SC2 become their semi-responsibility might speed up basic tasks to maintain the game (updating the ladder with maps entirely made and QA'd by the community).

I just hope it's not the Microsoft classic move of embrace, extend, and extinguish https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguish

embrace SC2, extend it by giving us patches and sponsoring tournaments and making SC3, then extinguish our scene because it's a consolized Xbox game

I don't see how this is applicable since this particular strategy relates to entering a relatively 'open' category and then monopolizing it by grafting proprietary technology to it. The video games market is about creating a proprietary product from the very beginning; this is just shifting ownership of one proprietary product which has already had several notable IP-based disputes (StarCraft) to another owner.

But, yes, Microsoft could mismanage its third party relationships regarding StarCraft.

I'm definitely happy that Bobby Kotick is gone now. It is pretty interesting that Microsoft's model is now to absorb already-successful gaming companies to try to stay relevant when it comes to video games, given how poorly Xbox generations tend to perform against PlayStation and Nintendo generations.

Microsoft needs to fire a ton of incompetent people currently working at Blizzard. After that they need to do one thing, and one thing only: make good games. Games that are fun, creative and impactful. If they can actually do that, then they don't need to worry very much about the impact of their future projects on existing franchises. They just need to not break the older games.
Just don't fuck things up, and make good new games. Simple.
If you want to do the right thing, 80% of your job is done if you don't do the wrong thing.
