For my first return guest, I had on the ever knowledgeable, Team Liquid's own Waxangel.
He like, writes some Starcraft stuff sometimes or something? You may have heard of him.
Jokes aside, it was great to sit down and chat with TL.net's Editor in Chief again. We got to chat about GSL, WTL, SC2 Goat debate, Stormgate reveal, and more.
Determining who the best player of all time based on how they do on yearly tournaments that are single elimination is hilarious, there's so much luck in that tournament format, not only in the game itself but in bracket draws.
Rogue never was a betting favourite in any of those tournament wins.
Rogue has a -43 map score versus Innovation and -17 vs TY, this is your GOAT?
Maru and Serral basically dunk on every player that hasn't stopped playing SC2, they're clearly the best 2 players in the world by a good margin for years now.

Yeah, because Rogue has stopped playing sc2. He has dunked on Serral and Maru in finals
Rogue isn't my Goat, but I don't think your argument has much merit. Nobody cares about map scores against other players or something like that, that's just statistics. The majority of games are played in some online cups nobody cares about, in the actually important tournaments Rogue has the best results.
And you don't get 11-1 score in offline bo7s just due to "luck"

Weak argument using map score
Rogue shows up when he needs. That’s why he has 2 world championships and literally destroys anyone he meets in the finals

Isn’t that Mizenhauer who said that? Wax is just the messager, I mean editor for that article . I am not surprised to see that Wax thinks Rogue is the GOAT (didn’t see the video yet but that’s what the thumbnail implies), he said something along those lines after both Serral and Maru failed to win Katowice 2023 iirc.
Keep up the great interviews it’s always nice to get insights from the people in the scene

I mean, if you ask each of Maru and Serral who they rather face, Rogue or the other guy, I think they might rather facing each other than Rogue. Especially for Serral, even though I knew he beat Rogue in the previous IEM, his ZvZ can be exploited by the like of Rogue. And Maru will have PTSD about those Roach build that Rogue did against him in that GSL Final.
Believe it or not, Rogue was trying to win all the tournaments he lost.
And there's a metric fuck-ton of them, him getting farmed by Innovation I'm sure it happened in quite a few important tournaments, he was trying to win, he just couldn't, getting a nice bracket and winning a few BoX is a lot luck, you should look at consistent performance.
And yes Serral will rather play Maru instead of Rogue because he's avoiding ZvZ, which was my other point about bracket luck, judging a player for yearly single elim tournament is really stupid.
Crazy how esports existed for so long without any involvement from Activision-Blizzard-Scammers. Now GSL needs patreon to fund their events lol. Is there anything activision can't ruin? And they keep raking in money cuz everyone keeps supporting the biggest leech in gaming.
Now twitch is posed to do similar stuff sucking out all the ability of their streamers. Streamers and viewers won't like where all this winds up.

Actually in offline series Rogue is 6-4 vs Inno in LotV.
But yeah I guess he can't be the Goat because Inno beats him in random online cups nobody cares about.

GSL needs funding because the "leech" stopped paying for an event that has tremendously bad marketing and was completly shitting on its core audience, which, surprise, wasn't korean at all.

Rogue cared about those, just like he cared finishing second to last in Group stages in katowice.
Recency bias and not understanding statistics dominates sports viewers in general.

I understand statistics I just don't consider them important. No pro player would choose dominating ESL cups over winning 3 world championships.
Your argumentation is like saying Real Madrid is not the greatest football team of the last decade because Man City had a better win percentage. Trophies matter - not statistics.
