TL.net Map Contest #15: Voting Results & Winners

Text byTL.net ESPORTS
July 14th, 2021 22:15 GMT
TLMC14
Voting has closed and the ballots have been counted. It's time to announce the winners of TL.net Map Contest #15!

We'd like to thank all the mapmakers for their map submissions, the TLMC judges for selecting the sixteen finalists, Wardi for running another fantastic TLMC tournament, the players who participated, and Shopify, ESL, and Blizzard for helping us hold another iteration of TLMC. And, of course, we're grateful to all the fans who voted on the final sixteen maps.

Mapmakers will receive $200 per map that finished in the top sixteen, and receive additional prize money for maps that finish in the top five as chosen by public vote:
  • 1st place - $800
  • 2nd place - $500
  • 3rd place - $250
  • 4th place - $150
  • 5th place- $100

We'd also like to remind the community that the top placing maps in TLMC #15 are not guaranteed to be added to the competitive ladder. ESL and Blizzard will reference TLMC #15 and choose which maps to add at their own discretion.

5th place

"Treadmill" by Zweck

Treadmill makes use of very smartly positioned slow and acceleration zones, taking full advantage of them and synergizing them with the mirrored symmetry layout. Treadmill has already delivered some solid games during the Wardi Map Contest Tournament and certainly has potential to keep doing so if selected for the competitive ladder.

High risk, high reward center bases are sure to give a major advantage to any player that secures one—if they aren't forced to GG while trying. With a semi-island blocked by Mineral walls at the very bottom of the map, Treadmill opens up many possibilities for players who want to tailor their build orders for non-standard gameplay.

4th place

"Pride of Altaris" by 4096SP

We're very happy to announce a finalist made by a mapmaker from Mainland China, a scene that hosts many major tournaments but sometimes feels detached from the rest of the StarCraft II community.

Pride of Altaris favors more defensive gameplay during the early-middle phases, due to its high ground natural and easily defended initial expansions. As the game moves on, the action is directed to a central valley, where players will have to wrestle for control of several late-game expansions.

The central gold bases have 8 rich mineral patches instead of the standard 6, but are riskier to take than gold bases on most previous maps. Be it daring fast expansions or late game brawls, they're a potential point of conflict all game long.

3rd place

"Yamatai" by qtsha1

From the freestyle category, Yamatai makes a considerable impression based on its active usage of verticality, shining a light on how upcoming maps and future TLMC submissions might use more than three terrain levels. Of course, Yamatai is also notable for its vibrant visuals—one hopes they can be preserved during performance optimization.

Despite having a more standard expansion layout, Yamatai still hosted a variety of interesting games during testing during the TLMC tournament. A low-ground center crossed by several high ground ridges ensures that vision and positioning will be crucial to victory. While previous maps have certainly achieved this effect, Yamatai takes it to the extreme with its varying terrain levels, and we're curious as to how tactics might evolve on the map.

2nd place

"Aqueducts" by Superouman

Aqueducts is a map that has been worked and reworked through many years by veteran mapmaker Superouman, and is a familiar map to TLMC veterans. It's a map with very strong fundamentals, and is exemplary of how to merge aesthetics and level design in a harmonious manner.

For the map layout itself, the center is an extremely important flashpoint, especially for armies that excel at controlling space. While there are many narrow chokepoints and corridors that armies must maneuver through, the wings of the map are still relatively open, preventing the game from becoming too cramped or stagnant.

1st Place

"Oblivion" by themusic246

By: themusic246

With outstanding aesthetics, Oblivion features an eye-catching split tileset that has become uncommon in recent years. However, the distinct visuals are paired with a very solid standard layout, which is the real key to the map's success.

A central attack path flanked by two high-ground plateaus makes scouting absolutely critical, as losing sight of the opponent's army for just a few seconds could spell disaster. Resourceful players should try to take full advantage of the multiple paths, be it for backdoor harassment or seizing an advantageous position ahead of a major battle.

Congrats to everyone!

I was wondering how much the 1 pylon block ramp would affect the perception of Oblivion. Seems not much (yeah I know it got patched).

Seems we will get it on ladder at some point.

I really like Yamatai, hope we get it on ladder.

Congrats to the finalists, and themusic in particular for the win, I don't think it surprises anyone. My personal favorites are Aqueducts and Pride of Altaris, and with any luck they make ladder soon.

Congrats to the winners

I honestly kind of saw it coming from a mile away (I guess we all did in a way), Oblivion is just so flashy aesthetics wise

I really, really want to see Treadmill on ladder, I believe that it would be very, very good

I was hoping Tidehunter would be more popular. It and Oblivion were my two favorite maps, followed by Aqueducts.

Interestingly, the highest 4 spawn map only got 9th.

Some well-deserved winners! Good to see Treadmill and Aqueducts make top 5. Oblivion being first place, I think many of us saw coming a mile away, partially because it was in GSL.

Congrats to all the winners and thank you for organizing this organizers.

I really like ‘Yamatai’ but I think the visual clutter and colors make it hard to see the actual cliff levels.

Congratulations to everyone. Despite everything that has surrounded this particular map contest, I think the five finalist's are all very good and very deserving maps.

I'm a little surprised that Bulwark got the most votes of the four 4p maps. Honestly, I thought that one was the least best of the 4, and didn't exactly have the best of showings at the tournament. I wonder if any of the 4p maps will actually make it on the ladder in the next couple of seasons. I don't think the pro's, from what they expressed during the tournament, want any of them to be. We shall see I suppose.

Thank you to everyone who made this contest possible, especially the mapmakers. In spite of the flaws of the current format (those of which have been heavily discussed in other posts), I'm relatively happy about the maps that placed highly. 4/5 of the maps I voted for finished in the top half (Yamatai, Pride of Altaris, Iliad, Enchanted Isle).

Agreed. Personally I thought Jacaranda was the best 4p map finalist. It was the only 4p map I voted for, and was surprised it came in last.

Congrats to the winners! I think Oblivion being in GSL helped a lot, but it’s a strong map anyway.

I’m glad Treadmill made it high I think the map has a lot of potential.

Super sad for Curious Minds / Berlingrad, I think they are super strong maps for being in the rush category, Curious Minds is my personal favourite. Berlingrad does not deservw to be so far down.

Surprised how well super large, take your bases and do nothing for 20 minute maps fared. Hoping only one makes ladder, they didn’t make for enjoyable games.

Personal top few were:
Curious Minds
Yamatai
Treadmill
Berlingrad
The Scavenger / Sanguinite / Fountainhead

I have a feeling that most people just voted the maps that look the best anyways. Here's to hoping that ESL will be wise to choose the right maps for the ladder.

Out of curiosity, which are the maps that are super large? Pride of Altaris?

I really didn't like any of the 4p maps, including the games. (Even though I think some of the aesthetics for them were great!) Even for GSL, when Nautilus is played, none of them made for good games. I still don't really get why we want 4p in a 1v1 tournament. All the gains from 4p maps can be done in 2p maps, with none of the drawbacks.

Pride is big, but didn't seem impossible to attack on and to make interesting games happen on. Enchanted Isle was the worst offended, large, all the bases are set back and the game just sits with players mining out. I'm worried the Aqueducts meta will be very passive as well, as bases are well protected, but the games we saw didn't suggest that so far (but we have always seen map metas look very different in the tournament vs when they hit the ladder, see Blackburn which gave amazing games in TLMC and is now the bane of any non-Terran.)

Edit: I don't think it's overall an issue having passive maps / easy to defend early bases, but I would love to avoid every BO3 having a map thats guaranteed 20+ minutes of nothing happening, it becomes old very quick. Definitely would only like to see one of the larger maps in ladder at a time.

Blizzard will pick the most suitable maps, it's common for the maps outside of top 5 to hit ladder, and also with current map rotation, it's possible to exhaust more than 6-7 maps before the new TLMC.

As long as I'm your number one, Wardiii, I don't mind not getting into the top 5. After all, I believe that Blizzard can recognise the potential of the good maps.

I made Curious Minds to break the cycle of skytoss and introduce back the old builds and other ways to play starcraft, focused on the early to mid game compositions.

With the triple void ray buff, and Blizzard not patching the game anymore, the maps are the only way to balance the game. I hope that people who don't like rush maps would understand the reason behind creating them and our strive for variety in the map pool.

I'm looking forward to the next TLMC.
Much love to anyone who made this one happen.

Congrats to the top 5.

As per usual the winners of the public vote are the maps that managed to stand out from the competition, very well deserved.

My maps didn't do so hot, but with 2 in the finalists I really can't complain. Maybe this will teach me to spend more time on the decoration on all 5 of my submissions, not just the 3 that didn't get chosen :D

I was watching Harstem's cast of Rogue vs ByuN on the map Bulwark. It seems to be super imbalanced for the Terrans. That map should not be on the ladder without major changes, in particular the high grounds around the bases. It's very Terran favoured.

With the previous tlmc format, it was possible to change the decoration before the voting which was nice.

Congrats to all the winners and to all finalists. Maps look amazing.

To the contest organizers, thanks so much for running this!

I do think that voting should be open longer, in particular I think voting should be open for at least a full week after the last vod from the TLMC wardi tournament is posted on YouTube. I think lots of people don't want to vote until they've seen maps in real games, and for people with full time jobs it can take a week to catch up on the vods form an event.
