Pornainen is closer to Seoul than to Anaheim.

There's no real point in letting him play the Ro16 if he can't play the Ro8.

Just gamble on him getting eliminated in groups

There's still no official word. This issue has been talked about since IEM Katowice. If nothing else Blizzard would have had ample time to look into making travel for Classic possible. But we still haven't heard more than guesses. And I mean maybe he gets drafted right after the Super Tournament and the question answers itself, who knows? We don't.

So, Classic can still play and the remaining two spots will be fought fiercely among Stats, TY, Dear and Ragnarok themselves.

What will Rogue do to Stats since he admittedly say Stats helped him as training partner?

Dear isn't gonna do any fighting. herO is in jeopardy though.

you get prize money for showing up though. Would be unfair imo if they don't let him play the ro16 then.

Would also be unfair if then he had to give up his spot in the Ro8 if he advances from the group stage because it's no longer in Korea. And this is still under the assumption the military doesn't draft him in before the Global Finals start.

Also don't the players outside of the top 16 get money from War Chest this year?

This is a nice move by Blizzard. It brings some hype to the Korean scene and gives us the stellar Afreeca production with a real studio audience instead of the empty-studio-nasl-sound-guy-waiting-fest we're used to. I bet it even saves Blizzard money.

This also means that we will finally get a blizzcon where everyone is equally jetlagged. Way to achieve balance, guys.

As for the foreigners, since they have nothing else to do at the moment they can just fly in to Seoul early to get used to the time zone and enjoy the advantage of the superior practice environment.

If they get there too early they will accidentally teach the Korean Zergs how to play ZvZ, seems risky.

They've not just moved the group stage to Seoul, they've also changed the format to make every match best of 5.

Even if they would meet in ladder game, I doubt that Dark and slumping Soo would adapt their zvz style that quick

Having natches as bo5 would have worked better in last year's format of splitting each group over two days.

Making them play two-three bo5 back to back seems like a lot.

Also the Maru-Stats-Serral group is now possible or even likely if Classic is allowed to play
Zest, sOs, PartinG, Dark, and Maru are the real champs. ROOT_herO is overrated. Snute, Serral, and Scarlett are the foreigner GOATs

This setup should benefit the Koreans. They get home soil, a preparation tournament (for this round) and a best of five which takes more series planning skill.

Playing in Korea AND bests of 5? Now we just need Maru to finish 4th and to TY to finish 8th in WCS Korea points.

What for? Serral won two titles already on korean soil and defeated TY in two bo5 this year. As for Maru, who knows...if Serral beats him he would most likely get eliminated in such a group.

That is so sick! Plus they play the matches in the proper GSL order, not the losers' match before the winners' match like last time.

Shit, I missed that. Start time at noon during weekdays is also pretty bad for crowd attendance in the studio :/

I mean its common for them to fly out to korea for practice anyway. In 2017 Serral stayed in korea for the run up to blizzcon. So did Neeb last year (and the year before maybe?)

Exaggerated, but yes, not the best for high viewer numbers. Not exactly sure if I'll tune in to all matches, probably not.

For those of us who didn’t win the lottery for a chance to buy Blizzcon tickets, this is a chance to go see all the WCS Global Finalists play.

Is there a guide for foreigners on which hotels are near the FreecUp studio and how to use transit to get there? It’s too bad Creighton just left Korea, I think he used to help foreigners get to GSL.

Well, for context, Korean fans have dealt with bad time zones for Global Finals for the entire time modern WCS has existed (2013~). Even if Korea has a relatively small fanbase (last night's Code S finals peaked at like 3700 viewers on AfreecaTV), Korean players still account for HALF of the Global Finals, while Koreans account for like 95%+ of all the success in high level SC2 progaming. I think it's reasonable enough to cater to Korea this ONE time out of six seven Global Finals .

I agree, but this isn't really catering to Korean fans. 12 pm on a weekday? That's not a good time slot. Really it seems that blizzard are catering to NA fans (west coast fans) with that evening broadcast.

Well in that case the California broadcast wasn't even good for NA fans, because they started on a Thursday at 9:30AM Pacific time. TL;DR: unite against greedy Europeans?

I like the nod to Starcraft’s spiritual home, plus I like the Bo5 change a lot too, more Starcraft and theoretically makes it more likely the better players make the Ro8

The only part of this I don’t like is all of one group’s matches being on one day. By the last match both players are going to be gassed after playing two high-pressure Bo5’s. Four matches per day, one per group would make more sense, but I guess Blizzard wants the tournament to be as done as quickly as possible.

As for the foreigners, since they have nothing else to do at the moment they can just fly in to Seoul early to get used to the time zone and enjoy the advantage of the superior practice environment.

If they get there too early they will accidentally teach the Korean Zergs how to play ZvZ, seems risky.

LOL, lost my coffee on that one, well played.

Are we talking about the same thing? I was referring to the global finals ro16 in Seoul which will be held at 8:00 pm pacific and noon in Korea. And Europeans have to get up at 4 am.

Staying up is surely the better option? How the fuck does one wake up at 3:30am?

Too late for me to join that glorious group of people. So my plan for the group stage is to catch a bit of the action on my phone and then watch VODs when I get home.

I really like this idea. To anyone saying “oh no the foreigners” have to travel are forgetting the Koreans have to travel to BlizzCon every year.

I’ve been saying the group Stage matches needed to be Bo5 for a long time. It’s criminal to spend all year trying to qualify and then the possibility of “2-0, 2-0, see ya in half an hour of gaming.”

I think this is a good thing because people will actually be able to watch the Ro16 instead of playing in a vacuum although I do question the fairness of having it in Korea. But at least we know there will be interest! Hopefully they fly the Circuit players out early enough to adjust and do the same for BlizzCon because no one likes it when someone says they couldn’t play well cuz of jet lag....

Stupid. Stupid stupid stupid. Between 6-12k watched the GSL final this morning. WCS EU qualifiers attracted more viewers than that.

Are we talking about the same thing? I was referring to the global finals ro16 in Seoul which will be held at 8:00 pm pacific and noon in Korea. And Europeans have to get up at 4 am.

Are European really bitching about getting up at 4am once to watch Blizzcon?

Staying up is surely the better option? How the fuck does one wake up at 3:30am?

Get up at 4:30, skip the talking, watch the first game on your cell in bed, take a shower during the break, second match with your coffee

Haha thats an hilariously great idea, for me timezone wise it starts at 05:00 in sweden so its not quite that bad.

To top it off I work my last day at my current work the 23rd october and my new work starts the 4th of november. I'm so ready for this, will still miss two of the days due to moving to a new city but it will probably be worth.

I have to say I love this news though, having the groups in korea puts a lot of hype behind it, adds a famed venue, spectators and really great production. Besides that it sets the stage for Maru to actually deliver =P

I feel the same about bo5, sure it could make the series tedious and it will be rough on the players but we are talking about the bloody world championship finals here. The most important thing is that we get to see the best players in the world duke it out at Blizzcon and this setup ensures that. The best players are more likely to move on from bo5s and we also get winners that are actually the most skilled in longer series and that lessens the risk that one trick ponnies go to blizzcon and then bomb out 0-4 in the first set. Seriously so hype~

Ive been there 3x and its really easy. Creighton helped me so big ups to him.

Just go to the green line and go to Samseung station, wouldn't really recommend staying in Gangnam (the area where Afreeca station is at). I would recommend staying in HongDae for access to the subway or Itaewon ($5 taxi to the place)

For people complaining about time zone stuff. Just watch the VOD. Yeah it's not as good, but really? Viewership numbers will be lower, but the event is going to benefit from being in Korea. It's a good move, overall, imo. Most people can't realistically watch these things live, anyway--no matter what time it's on. It's always gonna be bad for somebody.

I, for one, am hyped as hell.

I'm very pleased and excited about the bo5 format in Korea with a live audience. I've always felt in years past that the lower half of the players who don't make it to the BlizzCon stage somehow get massively robbed. This change should make the whole experience better not only for the players involved, but also for us spectators and fans.

Super pumped for this!

I absolutely cannot wait for this X_X. Possibly, probably, more exciting than the Ro8.

We need to know what's happening with Classic! What the hay.
