Since there aren't enough GOAT threads in the forum, I would like to bring up the argument that Maru is GOAT by GSL Code S medal count.

Here's I'm only counting tournaments that have "GSL Code S" in their names, so no Open Season, Super Tournament, Blizz/HotSix Cup, GSL v World, Global/World Championship, SSL, OSL, etc., because those are all far inferior tournaments to Code S and dumb.

(Bronze is 3rd/4th place, so each Code S awards 2 bronze medals)

As you can see, Maru is GOAT for having 8 Code S medals, while soO is fated to be number 2 in every single ranking.

Also Stats is the only one with the 1-1-1 Code S build.

Interestingly, if you go by Olympics medal ranking rule, i.e. # of Gold > # of Silver > # of Bronze, Mvp would still be ranked number one if Maru loses Classic. Just goes to show that Mvp is still relevant in the GOAT debate even to this day. Definitely the King of WoL.

No such thing as a GSL bronze medal. And if you don't count the Ro4 finishes (or if you do something wishy-washy and count them as a half medal) Maru ain't first.

You can´t give one point for each medal, that makes no sense. At least give gold=3 points, silver=2 points and bronze=1 point. Or something else.
Then it would be:
Maru: 15/16 points
Mvp: 14
soO: 13
Inno: 12

So still Maru first, but a bit more reasonable (at least in my eyes).

Rankings aside, it's still so weird to see the number count and see MVP, Nestea and Life so high up. Really quite amazing what they all did in the short span of time they played comparative to how long the game has been out now.

Ehh... He would be if he didn't get banned from the game for... life.
I actually consider him fortunate that they aren't retroactively removing his previous achievements. (Other than removing his Blizzcon winner banner, ofc)

It should be more like gold = 7, silver = 3 and ro4 = 1. Or even gold = 5 and silver =1 and nothing for ro4.
INno <3 - TY - Maru - Taeja - Rain <3 - Classic <3 - Stephano <3 - soO <3 - Soulkey - Dark - SERRAL =O / END REGION LOCK

I don't erase someone's achievements for his low integrity. (except when it is about politics) so this discussion is already pointless indeed.

Apart from arguing about the point valuation of golds and silvers, there's also the obvious point that myopically looking at the top 4 of code S is a fundamentally flawed way of trying to gauge who the greatest player is.

I don’t think they play the bronze medal match though, so it should be something like gold worth 4 points, silver worth 2, bronze worth 0.75 (half way between 1 and 0.5).
I root for Euro Zergs, NA Protoss* and Korean Terrans. (Any North American who has beat a Korean Pro as Protoss counts as NA Toss)

Most probably not, but they're not important for this discussion
I imagine France should be able to take this unless Lilbow is busy practicing for Starcraft III. | KadaverBB is my fairy ban mother.

How are they inferior exactly? The OSL that Maru won literally ran instead of Code S that season, while having the same players/prize pool/was points.

The reason it was called OSL instead of GSL was because OGN broadcasted the playoffs that season.

SSL in 2015/2016 was basically the same as GSL as well. The 2017 SSL is debatable I guess
Zest, sOs, PartinG, Dark, and Maru are the real champs. ROOT_herO is overrated. Snute, Serral, and Scarlett are the foreigner GOATs

It wasn't inferior in any way like you say. However (a lot of) people didn't accept another good tournament and only valued GSL which is also why the viewer numbers of SSL/OSL were quite a lot lower.
