I rewatched the gameplay videos and I noticed that when a group of units moved that they moved in formation.

Is it true that units move in formation now? In SCBW they usually clump or stay in formation due to the "magic boxes". Do they still operate the same way?

How do you think it will affect game play if its always formation? Do you like it?

I used the search function and I didn't find anything on this topic yet. Sorry if its been discussed obscurely in another thread. I haven't kept up with it to the 'T'.

It will probably be like WC3, where formation is a toggle - you can leave it on, but pretty much everyone turns it off.

You have to have it in the game though or reviewers will be like, "OMG where are formations??? They add so much to the strategy!"

I liked the formations from Age of Empires. It was kinda nifty to click the box formation and watch your troops instantly seperate into this box thing.

Can't really see its application in SC though. The only ground unit that comes to mind that would benefit from a formation is High Temps. They can be in the middle of a box formation and be protected by zealots or something. No other unit really benefits.

formation in war3 is very different than formation in sc

turning off formation in war3 makes it somewhat like sc again

Doesnt seem like its a forced formation (like if a group turns left, guy on the left moves slower while the guy on the right moves faster). Just seems like pathfinding is a little smoother.

I'm not sure where you saw units moving in formation in the game video, cause right at the start, with the zealots moving down the ramp to the marines, you can see that unit movement is like SC and formations don't exist What you might have seen was what I will call 'cut-scene movement', IE: units that move due to scripting like in campagins. That type of movement seemed to be a lot more organized and in formations, but that doesn't really apply to actual games. So, suffice to say, I don't think we need to worry about unit formations entering the world of SC.

Formation in Shogun Total War was good from what I can remember of it. I think that Blizz might put this in as a noob-friendly feature, but it won't be auto, so we can all just turn it off and ignore it. Just speculating.

I think its a little too son to be worrying about things like unit formation when nobody even knows the semantics of sc2's micro yet.

It will probably have the same kind of formation that WC3 had. That means that all units in the selection will walk at the same speed and ranged units will move behind the melee ones. There probably won't be any useless things like box or triangle formations. Also it will most likely come with a toggle for the very common times you just want your troops to get somewhere as fast as possible.

using formations and stance in aoe2:the conq was like absolutely needed, in sc it simply doesn't fit in.

I for one would hate formations. The only one I would tolerate is to move your army at the speed of the slowest unit. The others I think of from other games will be pretty useless or not fit into the general SC type game.

A line formation could be useful for zealots and goons (or whatever unit replaces it). Ctrl click on zealot and then set line formation and angle (like in Baldur's Gate 1 if I remember correctly) so that their ranks may face any direction. Same with the ranged unit behind. I don't see anything bad about that ... There also might be some sort of spread formation to minimize damage from splash damage and spells like psi storm. Of course there should be option for no formation at all, but if it proves useful people will start using it.

Spread tanks, use siege mode and now you have a better push set than even the best T progammers, it could be fun, but there would be so much crying that it takes away skill from the game, so it won't be implemented

spread tanks aren't always the best formation. they can actually be quite weak in some situations

from the video, doesnt seem like there are any unit formations, but I DID see some flying units overlap each other (maybe muta micro will be possible? hehehe). But as other have stated, melee units just seemed smarter, to be able to move to the right position when attacking a group of units. Even with the zerglings, they surrounded the zealots better than they would have, had that moment been recreated in SC1, IMO.

Formation = worthless. Even the fact that you can toggle it on and off is fucking annoying. When I played war 3 I would constantly turn it off/on on accident because it had hotkeys for like CTRL+F or something. I never once found a useful circumstance to use it in a real game.

It just so stupid your units stop and reform all the time.

well as the first poster said: sc/bw had formations. as long as they weren't too big, units would stay in formation.

In War 3 the melee units always stay up front and the ranged/spell units stay in the back. So the units constantly shuffle around bumping into each other instead of fighting. Plus they line up in a perfect juxtoposed rows. Its just stupid.

I think he was referring to an Age of Empires type of formation system. The units go into perfect formation, and move at different speeds depending on where they are in the formation (while turning, etc.)

Basically. For some reason now having formations is like a litmus test for having a "legit" RTS.
