The Weekly Preview

With WCS Austin complete, the community turns their gaze back to Korea. There's only one week left in the GSL Round of 32, but there's still a glut of tantalizing matches to be played. Meanwhile, SSL Premier is fast approaching its critical stages. Just as the Round of 16 will be finalized in the coming days, this week's games in Premier could determine who moves on to the postseason.

Foreign Uprising

The first GSL of 2017 featured a lone foreigner and that count has doubled this season. (Z)Scarlett makes a not so triumphant return, keen to improve on her disappointing performance last time around. Billed as the next foreign hope, there was a lot of buzz surrounding her presence in Season one. She had a relatively weak group, but a sobering loss to (P)Classic and a close defeat at (T)aLive’s hands abruptly ended the hype. Scarlett has been largely invisible since that night. She’s been a constant in online event, but they haven’t featured the stiffest competition. When she has faced top tier Koreans in qualifiers for IEM and the GSL Super Tournament, she hasn’t exactly distinguished herself. That level of competition is exactly what she’ll be facing on Wednesday. She starts off versus the defending champion before fending off Classic and (T)KeeN for a spot in the next round. Undoubtedly Scarlett is talented and quite possibly one of the best foreigners, but fans want to see greater results to validate her time spent in Korea.

Joining Scarlett in Korea is (T)MajOr. Calling him the new kid on the block would be a disservice given that he’s been around from the beginning of Starcraft 2. But the fact that this is his first GSL cannot be understated. His path to this point was far from convincing. Wins over (P)JYP and (P)Hurricane give us little reason to believe he can go toe to toe with group members (P)herO and (T)ByuN. However, his performance at WCS Austin went a long way in dispelling the image of a player who habitually falls apart at LANs. His skill was a known factor going in, but he’d never managed such a respectable performance on the big stage. He gave the eventual champion, (P)Neeb, his closest match of the tournament and looked lethal in every game. MajOr’s run at Dreamhack was the most impressive feat of his career; whether he’ll be able to build on it remains to be seen.

Finishing Strong

One of the quirks of the round robin format of SSL is that you don’t know what your opponent’s record will be or what form they’ll be in when you finally run into each other. Players who have (P)Zest or (P)sOs left on their schedule probably consider themselves lucky. Others don’t have such a fortunate road.

(Z)ByuL is one of the three players tied at the top of SSL Premier. After a brief dip in form, he’s been playing extremely well as of late, once more showing bits and pieces of his vaunted 2015 form. His ling/bane/muta play has been particularly devastating. No other Zerg is capable of even holding a candle to his skill with that composition. Despite sitting in pole position, he still has a long road ahead of him. He’ll need wins against (T)Maru and (P)Stats if he wants to assure himself a spot in the postseason. (Z)Solar and (T)INnoVation are favored against their respective week eight opponents, so it will be critical that ByuL recovers from last week’s loss. His run thus far in SSL has given the community reason to believe ByuL is elite once more, but it could all fall apart with a pair of lackluster performances.

The Scrum

Lost amidst the talk of Zest and sOs’ failures, of Solar, ByuL and INnoVation’s ascents, is the fact that SSL Premier has turned into a dog fight. Only one win separates fourth from eighth place. Stats, (Z)Dark, (P)Patience, Maru and aLive find themselves in a race that could earn them anything from a playoff spot to demotion. In fact if the top standings remain steady, only one of these five players will show up in the postseason.

For all the talk of Stats versus ByuL or another ZvZ between Solar and Dark, the most important match of the entire season might just be Maru against Patience. Patience looked to be in horrible form going into IEM. Of course he got knocked out in the group stages, but he showed signs of improvement. Since then he’s given fans more reasons to be hopeful, but has failed to string anything of real significance together. Getting bounced from GSL was horrendous given that he was the favorite to advance. Even his above .500 record in SSL is suspect, the product of aLive’s benevolence.

While Patience will be relying on his above average PvT, Maru will be facing down the barrel of a gun. Maru used to be a TvP god in HotS, but the matchup has never quite clicked for him since the release of the new expansion. He hasn’t been able to harass in the unique way he used to, his drop play has been far from effective and he has never appeared comfortable with the new compositions he has to face and wield.

Patience is on a two week losing streak while Maru is recovering from a 1-3 start. A win here won’t guarantee anything for either player. One thing is for certain though: with rankings so congested in the middle of the pack, one loss could very well spell doom.

The Defense Begins

A player hasn’t won back to back seasons of GSL since (Z)NesTea did it in 2011 (and no one before that). That’s exactly what Stats will be trying to replicate when Group G kicks off midweek. Stats' form has been waning in the month or so following his victory against (Z)soO. But that’s not totally unexpected: a busy schedule, featuring SSL as well as the Super Tournament has given him little time to rest, recover and reflect on his first Starleague title. Those who expected Stats to retain his previous form have been left wanting. He stumbled his way through SSL and looked far from convincing, while being bounced in the first round of the Super Tournament by (T)GuMiho.

Stats’ career has always been the model of upward trajectory, but that isn’t the story any longer. He’s a champion now and if he wants to become one again, he’s going to have to reacquaint himself with the form he displayed at the end of 2016. He’s already locked up a spot at Blizzcon but as Zest showed last year, you tempt fate by resting on your laurels after an early victory. Stats’ title defense begins Wednesday. Does he have what it takes to join NesTea among the pantheon of GSL champions?

Weekly Schedule:

Mon - SSL Premier - Stats vs ByuL / Maru vs Patience / Solar vs Dark / Zest vs aLive / sOs vs INnoVation
Wed - GSL Ro.32 Group G - Stats / Scarlett / KeeN / Classic
Sat - GSL Ro.32 Group H - herO / MajOr / ByuN / Armani
Sat - SSL Challenge - Classic vs Dear / ByuN vs herO / Ryung vs TY

TLive Is Back!

by mizenhauer
[image loading] - mizenhauer

We at TLive have had a quiet month or so. Since the premiere of Fourth, there simply hasn’t been a lot of “our” type of news to report. That’s all changing though with the new season of GSL. Spring is in full bloom, so we brewed up what we think could be the next Idol/Starcraft 2 power couples to heat up the summer months. Our first focus will be on Group H. Read to find out what ravishing idols we paired with herO, MajOr, Armani and ByuN!

It’s hard to think of anyone in Starcraft 2 more “idoly” than herO. From the neatly rolled-up jeans to his heavenly smile and perfectly arranged hair, he looks every bit like he chose the wrong profession. It makes sense then that he’d wind up with Choa, the golden pixie-haired lead vocalist of AOA. Both of them have left their mark on their respective scenes, Choa with impressive vocals and seductive dance numbers and herO with his equally enthralling play. He always seems like the one to elevate a strategy to the next level and she’s done the same for AOA. Not only that, but they are masters of fan service and have huge followings. Whether hobnobbing in Gangnam or jet setting around the globe, herO and Choa would leave a trail of paparazzi a mile long.

MajOr is without a doubt the pride of Mexican Starcraft. He has been a pillar of the scene for years and is by far the highest earner and most accomplished player. Tzuyu’s career doesn’t yet have the same longevity, but there’s no doubting her importance to Taiwan. They’re both currently living in Korea and they’ve been doing quite well for themselves. Tzuyu is the visual of Twice, the blockbuster group releasing another EP in May. MajOr is one of two foreigners who qualified for the second season of GSL, proof that he’s fitting in just fine. Korea can be a lonely place for two born beyond its shores, though, so they would be a perfect fit to spend a quiet night making Gimbap together. They might look like the odd couple, but when you see the two of them in action, they’re undeniably electric. They’re the best their nations have to offer and they’re taking over Korea. Why couldn’t they do it together?

2014 was the year Hyerin and EXID burst into the public eye. They were the “it” group for a while due to Up and Down’s success. Meanwhile Armani was logging a number of notable finishes in what proved to be his most successful year. Unfortunately EXID and Armani couldn’t maintain that level. April was a windfall for the pair, however, with Hyerin and EXID releasing an EP and Armani making his second consecutive GSL. He might be an underdog, but both of them are looking towards summer with high hopes. It wouldn’t be crazy to imagine them cooling off beachside in Busan on an off day, enjoying the surf, sand and sun. They might have flown under the radar for a few years, but Hyerin and Armani are back. And they have everything it takes to be the next power couple.

ByuN may have earned a boatload of notoriety over the past year, but he’s been around far longer than that. The same goes for Twice’s unnie Nayeon. She became a trainee way back to 2010 and appeared in a number of CF’s during those early years/ 2015 was a huge year for both of them: LotV was released and Twice debuted. Since then, neither has looked back on their ascent to the top. ByuN is known for his likeability and congenial nature. Ditto for Nayeon. She loves to go back and forth with her fans on VLive, and the two of them have developed loyal following as a result of their affable nature. While Nayeon is locked into a summer visit to the USA, ByuN is still fighting for a trip to California. The mere prospect of seeing their favorites in person has North American fans giddy with excitement, so you can be certain they’ll be cheering ByuN and Nayeon on with all their hearts.

So there you have it, the dreamiest combinations we could think of. Make sure to watch them on May 13th as Group H brings the Round of 32 to a close.

Great read. I really hope Scarlett can do well, but she has a harder group than last season and she didn't get thru then...

Both Scarlett and Major are in for one hell of a fight.

I doubt even Scarlett's most diehard fans will claim Stats is not the heavy favorite in round one, and Classic has already beaten her on the same stage last season. KeeN is not the toughest Terran around, but third place doesn't advance so either Stats or Classic has to fall for Scarlett to move on. As good as she is, that's a long shot for just about anyone.

As hard as her group is, Major might just be envying Scarlett right now. While Stats is the reigning champion, Classic hasn't shown much in the way of peak performance in recent times. The same cannot be said for herO and ByuN. Both of them occupy well-deserved spots at the top of their respective races and on a good day, can legitimately contend for the title of best player in the world. Nothing short of a miracle will carry Major over one of them and on to the Ro16.

It would appear that the champions of Korea (literally and metaphorically) plan to utterly crush this foreign incursion before it can gather any more hype. Groups G and H aren't the hardest possible groups per se (still missing INnoVation, Dark, ByuL and TY after all) but getting a more difficult group from chance alone is pretty damn improbable. Best of luck to our foreign hopes, because they will most certainly need it.

Scarlett will probably pull out the proxyhatches and rushes against the protosses :D

tbh I prefer Major's position a bit more. Stats and Classic have consistantly superior PvZ to Scarlett. Whereas herO and ByuN have very spotty records. On a bad day both of them can lose to Major just as they've lost to foreigners in the past. The same cannot be said for Scarletts opponents.

There is a small chance that ByuN>herO in winner match, and then Major>herO in final match. Emphasis on small
Zest, sOs, PartinG, Dark, and Maru are the real champs. ROOT_herO is overrated. Snute, Serral, and Scarlett are the foreigner GOATs

I don't think Scarlett's GSL run last season was particularly disappointing. She went out 1-2 1-2 to Classic and aLive in fairly close series. Classic hasn't done shit since then and if Scarlett's improved even a little she can win, and she beat Keen recently 4-1. She has a good shot if she's on her game.

Classic played in the Group of Death and put on a damn impressive showing, as impressive as is possible to show without advancing. He beat Dark 2-0, pushed Inno to the edge in Game 1 and 7-gated him in Game 2, and then went 1-2 against soO who was of course the eventual finalist. He's also done well for himself in SSL Challenge by advancing to Stage 2 in first. Classic isn't Stats or even herO, but he's probably the 3rd-best Protoss around (with Patience). Point being, he's definitely favored over Scarlett going into Group G and not by a small amount either.

Stats ofc is the reigning champion, 'nuff said. Even after dropping off since his championship, he's still far and away the favorite of this group.

I agree that Scarlett can likely defeat KeeN but she has to beat either Classic or Stats to advance, so it's a long shot at best.

I mean, she couldn't beat Classic with proxy hatch vs nexus first back then. Maybe she used her time to perfect the proxy.

Well herO's heavy reliance on Adept/Phoenix means he's been hit disproportionately hard by the Adept nerf, but even with that disadvantage he still beat ByuN 2-0 in SSL. I find it very hard to believe that Major's TvP could be better than ByuN's.

Similarly, TvT is not a good matchup for ByuN, but he's beaten Major quite handily with Marine-Tank before.

Basically, Major has all the advantages he could ask for over herO/ByuN, but the skill difference is simply too vast for those advantages to make any real difference.
