Regardless of the situation, we will still action upon "dead game" comments. As this is a sensitive issue for SC2 fans, please do not come into this thread and talk about SC2 players switching over to BW. This thread is also not about bashing Blizzard, David Kim, or the WCS system. |
Very sad news.
LoL took over in Korea and nobody cares about SC2 anymore. The comeback of BW is something good but still feels very underground. I thought SC2 was making some kind of come back with Blizzard announcing big changes into the game. Let's see what Blizzard have to say in Blizzcon about this. They really have to do something to save the scene.

Has WCS for 2017 been confirmed? or mentioned?

I bet the subject won't be addressed at BlizzCon. Why would they care to bring it up? They'll only discuss the future of the WCS, I reckon.

I've been away from the scene for months and was very shocked to see this piece of news.
However, I was also surprised to see still "community feedbacks" still discussing the nuances of balance. Just as a comparison, BW was completed and didn't see a balance patch for many years.
This ever constant "tweaking" just makes me feel that Blizzard does not know truly what's going on, or how to permanently make SC2 fun to play and balanced forever.
A very sad news to read indeed.
I can't help but think, if SC2 was not released, if BW original proleague could have lasted this long know too.
Let's hope Blizzard does something drastic to revive the scene.

TBH if things continue as they are going in BW I think SPL might come back in a couple of years. It would be the only right course of action if sponsors and teams come back to SC1. But I have no doubt Proleague is done with SC2 for good. We might get a different team league of sorts, but it certainly won't be as prominent as what we used to have. SC2 competition will rely on individual tournaments for now.

I think that something to look forward to is more Korean player streams on Afreeca. Innovation and soo have already started and they're quite enjoyable. Perhaps Koreans will start looking like their foreigner counterparts in the way team works (more like agencies than actual teams).
My biggest hope is that the ban on Koreans for international events is lifted so that they get to actually play competitively. There are NO grass root tournaments in Korean like what Kim Phan promised.

ASL was partially sponsored by kt, Jeju Air and VANT. Gotta start small once again

I have no doubt Brood War will live in at this point but you're saying that it's going to grow, and become large enough to once again support dozens or hundreds of players.
I like your optimism even if I disagree with it.

At this point it's basically delusional speculation. But time will tell I guess.

BW won't return with major large sponsors, unless the game is remastered or remade.

Isn't Blizzard working on that though?

And they're still implying that MVP disbanded :<

I think that the scene took a blow but that the people still in are going to continue working on things.

Isn't Blizzard working on that though? It rumoured, but not confirmed. But the rumours said it would be announced September.. Hopefully its true and they'll show it at blizcon. The only real problem I have with BW for spectating is how dog ugly it is by modern standards. I've always wondered nobody made an observer client to make it look better for spectators. But hell everyone watches LoL and that looks terrible to me, so what do I know...
I remember that Dustin Browder interview where he said the fans told them to "Remake broodwar in 3D and don't mess it up" but he went on to explain he knew better. Hard to know if that would have been better or worse though, you'd have had a smaller player base in the early days for sure.
Perhaps the scene will benefit from not having the bonjwa factory in Korea. The players will probably be better off getting on with their lives than betting it all on a game with too many pro players for the money on offer.

I can't speak for the entire proleague season, but from my knowledge, a week/weekend long event, even how small the http://wiki.teamliquid.net/starcraft2/NEO_Star_League_2016_Season_1/International was (no qualifier, played entirely in a small studio), costs in the range of $300K-500K. The organizers also talked about crowdfunding an offline Kung Fu Cup, but they said they probably need something around 2 milion CNY total plus their own investment and sponsors for it to happen. Offline events are extremely expensive, there is no doubt in that.
