Hello, SC2 and TL.net community! More than 1.5 years ago Hybrid Settings 2.0 was developed by JaKaTaK and me. What is so unique in these settings? They are different from official ingame settings presets, and they took a place between Low and Medium. In starcraft 2 you may notice huge difference between Low and Medium settings - shaders, tons of effects, etc.
Hybrid Settings 3.0 are exactly same as previous one. They are working perfectly on Legacy of the Void expansion. So why I created this thread? First of all I want to provide some information on specific graphic issues that appeared in LOTV, like as new creep design. Second reason is inability to edit previous thread (it is impossible to edit such old posts on TL.net). Third reason, which is the most interesting in my opinion - I decided to merge Hybrid Settings 2.0 with Lite into one thread. And fourth reason - I managed to fix red water issue. Right now Hybrid Settings contains less lines to add to variables and more manual configuration through ingame options.
Main goals of this thread is to simplify installation process of Hybrid Settings (less text, easier to read) as well as bring some other customization to your ingame graphic. Basically, I want to compilate most popular graphic customization threads into one.
- Features
- Hybrid Settings
- Brighter models on low settings
- Zerg creep: creep holes, spread animation
- Remove 3D shadows from Medium / High / Ultra / Extreme settings
- How to uninstall Hybrid Settings
- Known issues
Brightness balance Low settings making game darker and a bit more color saturated. Medium and higher settings solve this problem by adding better lighting, entire brightness, contrast and colors become more easy for eyes, but Medium settings also added shiny effect, which isn't beloved by many players so they still are staying at Low settings, even today in 2014.
VFX balance On low settings you may notice, that you can not understand what your or enemy Nexus is doing - warping Mothership Core or producing Probes. You also can't see which units are in warping process, because of low models. Force Fields sometimes are very hard to see on low settings, and they become clearly visible, brighter and "sharper" only on medium settings. Hybrid Settings solving these issues, allowing you to have everything in one settings preset.
Better clarity, better look Hybrid Settings taking the best from both Low and Medium settings. For example on Low settings you can not set Models to High, meaning that you will never see warping units or nice deaths from acid or flame. On Medium settings you can't turn off creep giggling-wiggling waterlike animation, you can turn it off only on Low... and with Hybrid Settings.
No more 3D shadows Yes, Hybrid Settings allow you to turn off shadows completely. It means that game becomes even more clear and easy to read. And we paid attention to those who prefer to play with low (basic) shadows, i.e. blob-shadows (black blob under air and ground units).
- Perfomance varies depending on what Graphic Settings level you chose.
- Noticeable difference from Low (dark) and Medium (bright, shiny) settings.
- Ingame brightness is normalized across all maps. No more very dark or very bright maps.
- Visible unit outlines when they're behind buildings. This option is not available for Low shaders users.
- Creep spreads with simplified animation (like on Low). No giggling-wiggling animation on creep.
- Creep edges and holes are smooth (like on "Terrain: Medium").
- Improved look of Force Fields (same as on Medium or higher).
ComparisonHybrid Settings video demonstration in Heart of the Swarm+ Show Spoiler +How to install
- Set Graphic Settings to Low.
- Set Shaders to Medium.
- Set Textures - as you want.
Recommended - Medium (best balance between blurry and sharp textures).
- Set Models - as you want.
Recommended - High (models of warping units, Force Fields, Pylon radiuses are clearly visible)
- Set Effects - as you want.
Recommended - Medium (visible difference between M.Core and Probe production on Nexus
- Set Terrain - as you want.
Differences:
- Terrain: LOW - spreading animation is blocky and is simplified, creep holes are slightly smaller.
- Terrain: MEDIUM - spreading animation is smooth, creep holes are slightly larger.
- Terrain: HIGH / ULTRA - same as medium + creep covers ground decals
- Accept saved settings. Do not restart the game. Just close it.
- Find your variables.txt, located here / Documents / StarCraft II / ..
- Copypaste the following code to the end of your original variables.txt:
GraphicsOptionShadowQuality=0 lighting=0 shadowmapsize=1
- WARNING. Blob-shadows will dissapear, if you modify options. Any changes in Options (sound, hotkeys, game settings) will remove your blob-shadows. Solution is simple - don't touch Options (even don't press OK). If you accidentally changed something, just add again code above.
- In patch 3.1.0 creep graphic on low settings was updated, due to that I removed previous information about creep customization in this post. Instead, I will provide some screenshots with that new creep graphic on Terrain: LOW.
- Creep holes are smaller than on Terrain: Medium or higher.
- Creep spread animation is "block'y", i.e. it spreads by squares instead of smoothly filling ground.
Hybrid Settings 3.0 creep with "Terrain: Low" on Central ProtocolBack to top
- Similar to standard Low graphic settings in terms of perfomance.
- Brighter models of ingame objects including buildings, units and map doodads.
Surface and landscape brightness is same as on standard low settings.
- High models are unlocked (you can't use High models on Low by default). Thanks to that pylon radiuses and models of warping units are clearly visible.
- No improved look of Force Fields
- In game settings set all your Graphic Settings to Low.
- Set Textures - as you want. Recommended - Medium (best balance between blurry and sharp textures, between good perfomance and low amount of video memory required..
- Close the StarCraft 2 game
- Find your variables.txt, located here / Documents / StarCraft II / ..
- Copypaste the following code to the end of your original variables.txt:
lighting=0 GraphicsOptionModelQuality=1 lowqualitymodels=0 uselowqualitymodel=0 useLowqualitymodels=0
- Removes 3D shadows. Instead, you can use blob-shadows on Medium, High, Ultra and Extreme settings. It means that you may have all the nice graphic effects while turning off shadows. This is not possible through ingame options.
- In game settings set all your Graphic Settings and Textures as you want.
- Close the StarCraft 2 game.
- Find your variables.txt, located here / Documents / StarCraft II / ..
- Copypaste the following code to the end of your original variables.txt:
GraphicsOptionShadowQuality=0 shadowmapsize=1

- Close the StarCraft 2 game.
- Find your variables.txt, located here / Documents / StarCraft II / ..
- Find lighting=0 and delete that line. Save changes and close variables.txt
- In game settings set all your Graphic Settings and Textures as you want.
- Some users pay experience lags during games. Try to run Unit Preloader. Open ingame Arcade tab and search for Unit Tester.
- If you have lag, purple terrain/models and FPS drops, try to clear cache from ProgramData / BlizzardEntertainment / StarCraft II (this folder might be hidden, google how to show hidden folders).
- If you have lag, purple terrain/models and FPS drops, try to update your video drivers to the latest ones.
- If you have lag, purple terrain/models and FPS drops, try to Scan and Repair your game. You can find this option in dropdown Options menu in the Battle.Net launcher.
- If you still have issues, try to post comment here in thread and we'll investigate your problem together.

Low Hybrid Settings Has:
lighting=0 GraphicsOptionModelQuality=2 lowqualitymodels=0 uselowqualitymodel=0
All the other Hybrid Settings have GraphicsOptionModelQuality=1
I tried GraphicOptionModelQuality=2, but there was no difference. Changing it to 1 seemed to work.

That also immediately crashes the game on start-up.

Definitely seems to be the lighting=0 flag which is causing it. I have tried adding in all the commands except that one and the game runs fine. With the lighting=0 option, the game get to the loading screen and crashes.
Would be awesome to have my hybrid settings again!!

Another question. Are you using Mac or Windows?
Would be awesome to have my hybrid settings again!! lighting=0 parameter is the core of Hybrid Settings, without that parameter you can try some other presets (i.e. no3Dshadows, turn on high models on low, or customize creep a bit)

Running on Windows 10 Pro with the latest updates installed. While my PC is fine to run everything on Extreme, I love the Hybrid settings because of the increased clarity that it gives in the game. Removing the lighting effects definitely makes a big difference. If only I knew what the mismatch in texture reduction DB means or how to recreate that (already tried uninstalling and redownloading the game)

I've been expecting this, thanks!

hi, thanks for this!
unfortunately I have some issues with the extreme hybrid settings. I already did all the troubleshooting stuff from your post (minus graphics driver update, using windows 10 so I guess they are up to date).
you can see the problems I have here: http://imgur.com/a/yj7Wk
I think the red stuff is supposed to be water, you can see some ripples at the edges. the other background textures on the map work fine (clouds). the first screenshot shows the natural expansion. the minerals there have graphic artifacts that are constantly flickering. very annoying. other expansions still have the artifacts (some of them) but they dont flicker. any help would be appreciated.
btw I have vsync on there (I think I had some issues w. screen tearing on my old pc), I already tried switching that off but it did't change anything.
also, the only "cache" folder I could find is the one is program data/blizz/sc2/maps. should I also delete the "userCache.bin" in sc2/versions/shaders39254 ?
edit: problem was fixed by setting shaders to medium. I have shadows on medium too and the rest on high/extreme. works fine now, thanks existor.

All these red (and possible pink / black) stuff come from lighting=0 parameter, which turns off any custom lighting in the game.
Reformatted and updated 1st post again. There are less lines to add to variables for Hybeid settings. Medium and Extreme are merged into one. Instructions were updated also.

Excellent, I was waiting for it. By the way, a bit off topic but I'd be glad if I could get some help, since I have installed Windows 10 on my computer(or maybe the big UI patch?), I am unable to run the game in a 16 : 9 ratio on my 16:10 monitor(1680 : 1050). Before, I was able to go in the variables file and just with height=945 and width=1680 and it would go as I want. But now it goes fullscreen whatever I do, and 1600x900 is not even available in the usual options.
The only way I am able to play in 16 : 9 ratio is by plugging my TV which is recognize as 16 : 9 monitor and duplicate the monitor to the tv : only then 1600x900 can be selected in the options.
Has anyone encounter this problem and knows how to solve it? Thanks

Quick Question: Why are my Cinematics and Cutscenes are like 360p quality is it because:
1.: My graphics settings are in Medium ( in hots and wol, its also in medium, but cinematics are in full HD reso)
Or
2. I havent fully DL'd the patch. still has around 2GB left when I started playing.
thanks

Question: LotV now outlines small units hiding behind structures.
I can only get them to show up on Medium Shaders. Is there any way to get them on Low Shaders?
|
Not sure why this is, but I found that I was unable to play any game from the multiplayer tab after installing this (probably an improper copy/paste on my end tbh). but just in case anyone is having game freezes right when you try to start a game and it loads in. It always crashed when it attempted to transition to the actual game from the loading screen.
NOTE: this is strictly in game, main menu loads fine, all tabs open, campaign plays fine, only when entering a multiplayer game does it do this.
I only post this here because none of the usual crash/freeze fixes seemed to work, but when I replaced my variables.txt with the original I stopped having the issue. I'm sure it was my fault, but I do love hybrid settings so if anyone knows what I might have done wrong and could tell me how to fix it so I can use hybrid settings again(I used them in HotS) that would be super helpful.
NOTE:
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GT 745m (10.18.13.5354) (says it's up to date) CPU: i7-4500U 1.8GHz 2.40Ghz OS: Windows 10 x64 (eew, but I had 8 before, so anything was an improvement) RAM: 8GB

So, only on medium you can see unit outlines.

It works just fine for me. However I did notice that on Ruins of Endion it'ss really difficult to spot differences in terrain height with the lighting=0 modifier. Ramps and elevated terran just blends in a bit too easy with the rest.

Sorry, my fault. I didn't respect the first two steps 1. Set Graphic Settings to Low. 2. Set Shaders to Medium.

Excellent work btw, some maps are so much brighter (as invender) now it is a real pleasure to play on. Thanks a lot for this tool

Dunno about switching to low graphics (shouldnt be really happening) but brightness difference may be related to monitor/graphics card/other program settings. I got the same issue. I'm using flux and it overrides any brightness setting other games/programms use when in window mode.

So I have been wraping my head around revamping my old hybrid medium settings and i occured something weird.
Quick PC overviews:Both benchamrks were done on 1080p 144hz 24" Screen PC1: i7-6700k, 16GB DDR4 2133mhz, GTX Titan X, SC2 on: SSD SAMSUMG EVO 850 PC2: i7-6700, 16GB DDR4 2133mhz, GTX 970, SC2 on: SSD SAMSUMG EVO 850
If I put everything except sharders on medium fps is usually around 250(PC1) 160(PC2) If i put medium preset which puts bunch of settings on medium or high, fps are the same o.o
NOW:
If i apply hybrid settings to settings in case one, FPS jumps from 250 to 400(via fraps since its out of SC2 limit) and from 160 to 230 O.o BUT! If I apply this settings on the settings from second case, fps goes down to 130 and drops below 40 in fights.
My case is there is something weird with shadows in StarCraft since it looks like they eat over 100fps if they are visible on the maps.
Anyone else occured same thing?

I can't understand what lighting=0 actually do

I'm having trouble reverting the settings back to normal
I'm trying to play the game in ultra in factory settings. I can't find Lighting=0 in the variable text to delete it.

Just delete the variable.txt file and restart, then set to ultra and restart.

I've got an issue with Galactic Process map, all the areas that are voids/dead areas (like behind the natural) are a plain red colour.
I've tried deleting the variables.txt and restarting but no luck

Good job I lost over 100 fps

I really love this idea... but don't think I can help from switching *any* options in game
|
Recently I noticed that when playing on Mac, there is a new option under Render API. By default it is OpenGL 2.1, but now it is possible to use Metal(Beta). With Metal I get huge increase in fps, making it basically the same performance as when using Windows boot.
However, when using Metal, the game is crashing on startup when the lighting=0 is added to variables.txt.

I'm trying to get it running under wine 3.0/3.1, everything works except one thing. As soon as I put lighting=0 into my variables.txt, I get "An unexpected fatal error occurred". Same thing happens in wine 3.1. Any idea what might cause it?
Distro=Arch Linux Version=4.15.3

Try lighting=false
The tutorial is old. It may be possible some of the variables changed, but I can't guarantee that it's the correct one. If it doesn't show the intended one, try to modify everything again but this time put lighting=true

I'm getting back into sc2 and I wanted to try some different settings because I don't really like the high settings in the game. Is this guide still good to follow? Or is there an updated one?
|
This guide is awesome. I just formatted my computer and re-installed SC2 and this is literally the first thing that I did when I got in SC2.

I came back to the game recently after years of hiatus and it's been SO FUN; it's the best SC2 has ever been for sure.
I'm playing T now and have been using the Hybrid settings. They seem fine, but I do have one question - which setting to change to limit/remove explosions & over the top death animations? I was watching Uthermal's stream yesterday and whenever a baneling explodes there's pretty much no visual effect of that; The battlefield remains clear, everything is super visible.
Also, I'm having trouble spotting invisible units - is there anything that could help regarding this?
|
you're interested in "reduced violence" in graphics settings: uncheck the box and you will be done
to spot invisible units, hybrid settings are ok, you can rotate camera in case of doubt: it makes invisible units apparent as pixel blobs then you can land scan or EMP

Since you play Terran I would recommend using the Orbital Command ability "Scanner Sweep" to spot invisible units. You could also make Ravens, but OCs require less tech and are therefore available earlier in the game.

Thanks, but I don't think that's it - I already had it ticket and so I still see the baneling explode in green goo. On some streams it just sort of disappears when it explodes; In terms of clarity it's much, much better.

Thanks! I'll give you a shout out when I win WCS next year because of that trick.

You probably need set models to low. That setting on low makes units disappear instantly when they die and if it's set to high, then that's where you get units explode, melt in green acid and all.

HELLO
Is there a way to unanimate the menu background? I know some backgrounds are actually not animated if you don't have shaders on high (or medium iirc) and similiar. So this certainly is a known performance thingy to the developers which should deliver options.
I know from other games you can set such "useless" stuff to unanimated = 2d.
Which makes the big difference of a mobile system crashing/security shutting off OR running actually very well.

You need models on High! Since i did that its much easier too spot banshees or observers when moving of course I dont need shout out, just send me a check Also, check shadows and other settings for effects, when you cross over to option in graphics it will give you a little hint so you can adjust it yourself easily.

This would greatly improve my performance. Thanks
For instance the plain "Griffin" or "Horner and Han" are still pictures, and let it run much better. They are only available in the start screen though (first left tab).
----------------
Also I have a bug report: (issue) The map Ulzaan (with Hybrid Settings) has some flickering-backgrounds, for instance at the first ramp, starting area, quite some of the non-walkable cliffs. Ulzan is currently in the 2vs2 Map Pool.

Recently re installed star-craft 2, and was thinking about streaming, and thought that this guide offered very good clarity, while still providing a better viewer experience in terms of graphics.
I have not played in awhile, and would hate to shoot myself in the foot, or waste too much time trying to determine if this same clarity can be kept with better graphic textures. I find it easier then some of the streamers I have watched recently to see obs using these settings and have even watched streamers miss obs, that I believe I would not have missed using hybrid settings, however the trade off for a better viewer experience may be worth missing a few observers in my TvP.
That all being said, if anyone has any experience with increases the graphics quality with the attempt to keep the main advantage of the hybrid settings ( clarity / distinction between creep/dark terrain and easier to spot burrowed / cloaked units ) I would love to know how it turned out. (ie not worth my time, or any suggestion that has worked for you)
Thanks in advance, and regardless if anyone replies, I also would like to thank the OP once again for summarizing this, as this is not my first time re installing and using this guide to quickly get back the settings I was previously using. With only 6 pages in all the years its been uploaded, I would even call this a under rated tutorial for the amount of people I am sure have used it as a reference point

No problem, i haven't seen the games yet

I cannot remove these settings from my pc. There is no lighting=0, and I am unable to remove them after uninstalling and reinstalling the game. Please help!
|
It's lightingLevel=1 now. Just delete it, and it'll reset.
|
Also have a problem where the game crashes on start up. Sometimes I get to the main menu, but then crashes about 10 seconds later.
Running on mac
Definitely seems to be the lighting=0 flag which is causing it. I have tried adding in all the commands except that one and the game runs fine. With the lighting=0 option, the game get to the loading screen and crashes.
Same here. But it us unplayable without it because the lighting is all glitchy.
My video card is NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M 1 GB
Looked in the ~/library/caches but didn't see anything blizzard or starcraft related.
I wondered if it was related to the variable files. There are two I think, a master and one in my account. No matter which one I add the comments to it crashes.
Any other suggestions how to get this to work?

I've been fiddling around with the settings in variables.txt but there's a lot of the settings that I'm not sure what they do exactly. Also, as we already know, some can and can't be changed depending on other dependencies.
What I wanted to know was, what's the "nicest" graphics I can have while still being able to see cloaked units easier as it is with everything low/off? Hybrid is somewhat better, but it just can't hold a candle to simple cloak. I guess the biggest loss is a bit of gloss and spec, and crappy force field & placement images before a building is started. Also, building models especially, have very soft looking textures even through I have "GraphicsOptionTextureQuality[2]=4"
I'd also love to know what "pixellight" & the various FoW options. There's one that's "fastfow" I think, which you would think would be lower quality, but who knows. FoW also has a texture option and a volume option. :/
Last question is that I need help finding the red dot of a nuke. I know I can hear the missile incoming when it gets close, but that's often to late. I play Zerg and am red/green color deficient, so it's very hard to find. I also lose the cursor during battles due to it turning a dark red when hovering over enemies. I know this isn't a txt issue, but I was wondering if it was ever brought up to Blizzard. Before they shelved SC2....
I know I'm asking to have my cake and eat it too, but it never hurts to ask.
Thanks!
