This thread is inspired by the old 1000 tips thread, that isn't really updated anymore. Here's the game:

Everyone contributes a tip/trick/trivia that has one. You must include source information that I can use to verify it or it won't be included in the OP. I will update the OP with the facts I have verified and will be voted on to decide which ones get put into the latest Fast Facts video on Tutorial Central Sc2.

Tricks and Tips

Multiple races

  1. 2 queens beat 1 void ray, oracle or banshee.
  2. 1 queen loses to 1 void ray, oracle or banshee.
  3. The Colossus is the only unit that can be hit by the attacks of every single unit in the game.
  4. Despite its tall stature, the Colossus is affected by the blinding cloud spell.
  5. When a queen and mothership core fight without micro they simultaneously explode.
  6. If a queen micros against the mothership core it will win.
  7. Widow mines are unaffected by blinding cloud.
  8. All buildings are armored, even the creep tumor.
  9. +1 attack for zealots vs zerglings is a critical upgrade.
  10. You can get more gas by simply selecting the better geysers before the worse ones.
  11. Workers can “mineral walk” through every ground unit except the siege tank. This is true only when the tank is in siege mode.
  12. The mothership core has the same range and almost exactly the same rate of fire as a marine.
  13. DTs in Sc2 alert their enemies even if they kill a unit in one hit.
  14. DTs in Sc1 do not alert their enemies if they kill a unit in one hit.
  15. You can get an extra gas boost by finishing your gas structure first and transferring your probes into the gas before your expansion finishes.
  16. Setting your graphics to low or hybrid will make the red dot of the nuke easier to see.
  17. Mic volume in Sc2 overrides your windows settings, even if you disable it in-game! Even if windows is set to not let other applications take exclusive control of your recording device! To fix this, change the provider in the voice section of your options menu to Fmod.
  18. You can tell when a stargate is warping in vs gateway or robo because the stargate has a shadow. This only works with low or hybrid graphics settings.
  19. You can make the ground pink or black.
  20. When playing random, if the "tip" that is given on the loading screen is race specific, you are going to spawn as that race.
  21. Units that can’t move take damage from collapsible rocks, but units that can move automatically move out of the way.
  22. Force Fields can trap units where rock towers collapse and kill them.
  23. Massive Units will trample force fields to avoid the collapsing rocks.
  24. Collapsible rock towers deal 500 damage in one attack making them the highest DPS unit in the game.
  25. The fastest way to destroy standard 2000hp destructible rocks is with 25 banelings.
  26. The unit with the 2nd fastest rock destruction time without upgrades is a thor.
  27. It takes 2 widow mines to kill a mothership core
  28. It takes 3 workers and about 2 squares of surface area to kill a cannon before it completes if they start attacking the cannon when it is between 0 and 1/3 complete.
  29. It takes 4 workers and about 3 squares of surface area to kill a cannon before it completes if they start attacking the cannon when it is between 1/3 and 1/2 complete.
  30. It takes 6 workers and about 5 squares of surface area to kill a cannon before it completes if they start attacking the cannon when it is between 1/2 and 2/3 complete.
  31. It takes 13 workers to fully surround a cannon and will kill it in if they start attacking when the cannon is up to 90% complete.
  32. You can tell a pylon from a cannon as they’re warping in on low/hybrid settings because there is a shadow under the pylon. You can also tell by memorizing the height of the HP bars.
  33. Critters blow up if you click them enough.
  34. A single marine with combat shield will always beat a single marine with stim on equal upgrades.
  35. By holding the key to build workers during the loading screen and left clicking the main structure as soon as the game loads you can build the fastest possible worker.
  36. You can use shift to ensure you always cast spells at their maximum range
  37. It helps to know the number of workers to pull when defending an in-progress proxy hatch.
  38. Oracles do best against marines in lower numbers.
  39. By mineral pairing at the side of the mineral patch the workers will never go to another patch.
  40. If feedback is cast on a BC while it’s casing yamato cannon, it will be canceled!
  41. If you hold shift and repeatedly right click an SCV that is building, your unit will continue to attack it even if it changes position.
  42. There is a visual difference between a BC that has Yamato Cannon and one that doesn’t.
  43. When workers fight each other, assuming they attack at the exact same time, scvs or drones will beat probes, while drones and scvs are evenly matched.
  44. You can tell a Dark Shrine from a pylon by looking at the height of the health bars.
  45. Zerg are the only race that don't have both toggle options on the command card (excluding lift/land)
  46. Medivacs can heal protoss and zerg biological units.
  47. All auto-cast abilities can be activated and deactivated by pressing alt+their hotkey
  48. You can use the build grid to place expansions faster
  49. The oracle’s envision has a detection radius of 14, where as an observer only has a detection radius of 11.
  50. Widow mines can be hidden by buildings.
  51. A massive unit abducted past a force field will shatter it.
  52. Planetary Fortresses that are contaminated can still attack and get repaired, but cannot produce SCVs.
  53. The Oracle has a larger minimap square than units of a similar "on-screen" size.
  54. Overlords can scout the spawning location of an enemy without being spotted.
  55. If a Terran reactor is killed with a unit in production, it will be moved to the next spot in the queue and resume its progress where it left off.
  56. You can change your race while in queue for team games.
  57. Not all buildings or units have the same sight range.
  58. Terran buildings start burning down when they reach one third hit points and burn at a constant rate of 3 damage per second until they are either repaired or destroyed.
  59. I takes 12 stalkers to kill a medivac in one shot without an upgrade advantage.
  60. Colossus shooting from High Ground can be shot at from Low Ground without any additional vision.

Protoss

  1. The Mothership has the longest sight range in the game (14).
  2. Void Ray Prismatic Alignment works only against armored units.
  3. Protoss has the highest minimum speed and the lowest maximum speed.
  4. The moco does not shoot while moving like the phoenix and the mothership.
  5. A Photon Overcharged Nexus has the same damage and fire rate of a regular photon cannon.
  6. DTs kill workers and larva in one hit. (no upgrades)
  7. Casting Time Warp on a mineral line has a very small impact on the income generated.
  8. It takes 6 sentries to endlessly force field a single spot, such as a choke or ramp.
  9. You can use the "wiggle" animation of force fields to time them efficiently.
  10. Psionic Storm is the only thing with friendly fire for Protoss.
  11. It takes 9 stalkers to one shot a viking.
  12. If a unit passes in and out of a widow mine’s radius within 1.5 seconds, the widow mine will not fire.
  13. If a templar is targeted by a widow mine you can save it by merging it with another to form an archon.
  14. It takes 60 energy for an oracle to kill a pylon.
  15. A single oracle can kill a building hatchery before it finishes.
  16. It takes 2 zealot hits and 2 probe hits to kill a worker.
  17. Force field can cancel a nuke.
  18. A Baneling, DT, Storm, Sieged Tank, Oracle, Thor, Archon, or Ultralisk can kill a zerg larva in one hit. A widow mine can also kill a larva in one hit, but it can’t target it.
  19. Widow mines can be dodged with cloak and burrow.
  20. The queen beats stalker with no micro, however, with perfect micro, the stalker will not only win every time, but will never take any damage.
  21. Widow mines will never automatically target revealed hallucinations or disguised changelings.
  22. You can recall units that are warping in.
  23. Two Immortals can kill a Planetary Fortress if it is not repaired.
  24. Because a building only needs power to start warping in, and a Dark Shrine doesn’t need to be powered to unlock dt tech, a dark shrine can be hidden almost anywhere on a map.
  25. You can save your colossus from abducts by picking it up before the abduct lands.
  26. You can hallucinate to set off mines.
  27. Warp Gates Produce units faster than gateways in addition to being able to warp in wherever you have pylon power.
  28. When you upgrade the Charge ability for your zealots, they also gain a passive speed boost. Going from 2.25 to 2.75.

Terran

  1. Terran have the second highest minimum speed as well as the second highest maximum speed.
  2. When nuking, target a mineral patch or the gem on nexus, and scan on top of the red dot, this makes it harder to see.
  3. You can siege tanks on top of burrowed widow mines to make a muta trap.
  4. Widow mines can be manually targeted to maximize damage and 1.5 seconds later will fire.
  5. By juggling or continuously retargeting widow mines, a terran player can delay the firing of the widow mines until the exact moment it is best to fire them.
  6. Units in Bunkers will not die if a rock tower collapses on them.
  7. SCVs on auto repair in a medivac with a damaged mechanical unit will repair it while it’s in the medivac.
  8. Terran has 4 things friendly fire abilities.
  9. The efficacy of bio can be increased by kiting with the marines and marauders in a separate CG.
  10. You can build or land buildings next to enemy/ally add-ons and they will become yours!
  11. Mules mine at the same rate on gold patches as they do on normal ones.
  12. If you start building a structure with the SCV in the center of the building placement, it has a chance to keep it safe.
  13. These are the closest building locations to a standard Terran wall off that can’t be scouted by any of the workers or first combat units.
  14. The Raven’s point defense drone blocks the shots of an overcharged nexus.
  15. It takes 2 point defense drones to completely nullify the nexus cannon for its 60 second duration.
  16. A Hellion has higher potential damage than a Hellbat.
  17. It takes 11 orbitals and 11 available mineral patches to create the same amount of income generated by 48 workers on 24 mineral patches.
  18. You can utilize splash damage to kill tanks with seeker missiles more efficiently.

Zerg

  1. vision granted by creep comes from the creep tumor itself, not the creep.
  2. Zerg has the lowest minimum speed but the highest maximum speed.
  3. Burrowed Roaches move faster under creep than under normal ground.
  4. The viper consume ability stops after dealing 200 damage and draining 50* energy.
  5. You can shift queue the same or multiple structures when consuming in order to get the amount you want.
  6. You can morph a zergling into a baneling to save it from another baneling!
  7. Control+Clicking the alert icon will select all newly spawned queens.
  8. +1 carapace is a critical upgrade vs banes in ZvZ
  9. When drone scouting, building and then canceling an extractor will cancel the enemy unit’s attack command.
  10. Zerg has 0 friendy fire abilities.
  11. It takes 3 banelings to kill a building expansion if you react quickly.
  12. Broodlords can be kited immediately after executing the attack command.
  13. Not only does contaminate pause the progress of an injected hatchery, but it also prevents the non-injected larva from spawning.
  14. It takes 34 infestors to permanently fungal a single location.
  15. Muscular Augments, or hydra speed, requires a lair, but Grooved Spines, or hydra range, does not.

  16. Widow mines can be dodged by picking up the unit targeted in a dropship, blinking, or building something with a drone.
  17. To put creep anywhere on the map load up a queen in an overlord and drop it after generating creep. Then plant the tumor
  18. It takes at most 2 banelings to kill a worker so make sure you overlap their splash damage to ensure some kills.
  19. It takes 1 baneling to kill larva.
  20. +1 attack for roaches vs zerglings is a critical upgrade
  21. It takes 5 fungals to kill a muta.
  22. It takes 10 roaches to 1 shot another roach.
  23. It takes 8 queens to transfuse a structure often enough for a viper to constantly consume energy from it
  24. In team games you can mine from your ally’s gas geyser provided they give you control of their units.
  25. It takes 14 viking to kill a colossus in one volley.
  26. Given time a single reaper can kill a lone queen.
  27. 2 reapers and 2 queens can fight and heal forever if controlled correctly.
  28. It takes 8 attacks from a queen to kill a reaper.
  29. Changelings take on the vision radius of the unit they morph into.
  30. It takes 12 roaches to kill a queen in one shot with no upgrades.
  31. You can place creep tumors on your opponents creep in ZvZ.
  32. Changelings get upgrades based on the current upgrades of the opponent, but they are only visual, their stats do not change.
  33. You cannot neural parasite a drop unit that has units inside it.

Triva

General

  1. Raynor is a dirty liar.
  2. If you click a sc2 SCV enough times he’ll tell you about his cousin Lester that once saw a zergling. This is a reference to a cinematic from the first starcraft game.
  3. Your Mom was credited in the WoL Campaign credits
  4. If you complete the WoL campaign and select the Planets option in the gameplay section you will see one of 5 different planets instead of only the standard battlecruiser one.
  5. If you do not want to complete the WoL campaign there is another way to get these graphics discovered by Existor that you can check out here:
  6. Swarm hosts have the same amount HP, armor, supply cost and cargo space as a Siege Tank.
  7. To date (July 2014) there have been only 5 ladder maps that have islands.
  8. Dustin Browder's face is used in the Spartan Company Mercenary Unit Portrait.
  9. The maximum number of units or structures able to be selected at one time was originally 255. This was changed to 500 in patch 1.5.0 on the first of august, 2012.
  10. Ignoring temporary units, any max supply army can be selected and put into a single control group.
  11. The area in the bottom center of the screen in-game is often referred to as “the wireframe section”, but there are no wireframes shown.

Protoss

  1. The sentry is a robot that requires the cybernetics core.
  2. The immortal is a cyborg that requires the robotics facility.

Terran

  1. Terran has the most efficient upgrade system.
  2. Joey Ray is the name of the Terran in the opening cinematic of the original starcraft game and the name of the bar raynor is in during the first missions of WoL.
  3. Terran Transformer units gain their new stats and wireframe at different times.

Zerg

  1. the corruptor was initially conceptualized as a ground unit.

Just nitpicking, but it does sometimes occur a DT is at +0 while an SCV is at +1, which causes the DT to two-shot.

@Ghan
oooo, I suppose you're right. I'll reword it to be more accurate. Maybe, "The Colossus is the only unit that can always be hit by every attack in the game"? any flaws with that?

@Toastie
I'll update to note that

@b0ub0u
Fast Facts 3

Maybe I should list which video each fact is in...

@Existor
Of course I know of that thread! You linked it to me before. This thread will be a comprehensive, up-to-date, thread for all of Sc2.

Yeah, that's accurate. Could go for an easier one:

Every unit with an attack can hit a colossus.

Possible idea for the next fast facts video:

The cocoon of a Zergling morphing into a Baneling has 50hp and 2 armor.
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

Therefore a Zergling with no upgrades can survive a Baneling hit by morphing into a Baneling itself.
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

edit: In addition, the cocoon is not considered light. So the +15 vs light does not affect it.

You can also dodge them by picking up the targeted unit with a Medivac/Overlord/Warp Prism, right? Also, what about Vikings changing modes or Templars merging?

and this is why I verify before the video. gold mineral bases provide less income in total because there are less mineral patches 6*1500 vs 8*1500. Also gold minerals mine out faster because of this. I'll be replacing that fact with the baneling fact that admiral posted (forgot to add it to the poll). Still in the verification process, so get your votes in now!

The Facts have been chosen, we will release the video tomorrow morning. Thanks to everyone for contributing.

The next poll will get posted tomorrow (that way we can have a week of voting instead of a day. All submissions will be included in the poll that happen between now and then, so post fast facts you think should be in the next video now

Not so popular but interesting tips for Zerg (and others, but more usefull for zerg)

1) Shift-clicking (2-5 times or more) on scv-builder with your drone will force drone to follow that SCV around the building in process and not react to incoming SCVs

2) doing extractor-trick cancels enemy worker following order. I.e enemy "attached" his worker to your scouting Drone. Do an extractor trick and following order will be canceled untill enemy clicks on your worker again. You're paying just 6 minerals for resetting enemy worker order status. Sometimes it worths it.

I think when most people hear the word "income" they think of something like "minerals per minute", and not the total amount of minerals you can mine from a base. So this is a matter of semantics rather than facts.

Can you point out in the next Fast Facts that Brood Lords can be microd if you don't wait for the broodlings to fire before moving it... Brood Lords can surprisingly stutter step really well but I never see them used properly.

Assign "Choose Target for ability or A.I" command to worker mining command, so you can just select your worker, mouseover on mineral patch and hold that harvest-resource-command. Result - worker will instantly try attach that mineral patch, so no need to constantly clicking on that mineral patch to attach 2 workers to one patch

Another simple tip to save Swarm Hosts against Ravens is Nydus Worm. If you will always have Nydus Worm nearby your Swarm Hosts, you can save them from tons of splash damage that Seeker Missile can deal to you. Also you can abuse Nydus to drop Swarm Hosts quickly through map: for example drop somewhere, land Locusts and retreat. This is very deadly Zerg weapon that is not so expensive in late game since you're paying only 100 minerals / 100 gas for each SH drop.

Do you mind clarifying? Are you saying that you spam the gather minerals command? Or is there a command titled "choose target for ability or AI" somewhere on the command card that can then be assigned to another command? I'm confused. And this method doesn't require any spamming?

Add "Gather mineral" hotkey to alternate hotkeys of "Choose ability or AI target" and just hold gather mineral command on mineral patch. You will see how it works greatly

The charge surround thing was kind of cute but pretty much useless. Couldn't manage to get any footage demonstrating that it was advantageous so it was cut from the video. Has anyone used this technique in a way that proves its more useful than just A-moving?

- Load queens into overlord>generate creep>drop queen and place tumor (great for mid-game creep spread for gargantuan maps.

- You can use Nydus networks in multiple locations inside a main base to draw enemy forces back from a protected expo

- Burrowing Bainlings on a mineral line is far more effective than chasing workers. If the oppponet sees the burrow, his mining operations will be hindered until he is able to deal with it. If he doesnt see the burrow, He loses all his workers when he brings the workers back to mine

- A pack of Changlings can block ramps. This is especially annoying because you have to kill them individually.

SInce everyone doing his expands with prebuilt turrets/photons, I'm not sure it's a good solution. Except some rare situations when no turrets/photons or worker transfer happens instantly after HQ is built

You are obviously not going to be able to take full advantage of these tricks 100% of the time. but on the off-chance you do, its good to know these tips. ofc, nearly everything has a proper counter, these unusual tactics take time to devise solutions, especially in lower leagues.

I should probably elaborate on the "Nydus" trick. It is a head-fake. You use the nydus networks in a maner where it is going to scare the hell out of them, thats why its important to use more than one, You drop 3-4 nuduses in the middle of thier main, they expect an all-out attack in the center of thier base, when in-fact they are totally empty. there are no units in them at all. The real threat is where all their forces withdrew from to fend off the nydus.

This trick has won me several games, with 100% success to achieve what my aims truly were, to destroy their current expos, thus creating a loss they couldn't recover from.

You can rotate your camera to easily spot non-moving cloaked units. Use it to spot and scan observers before loading a drop or to avoid wasting scans. I saw Polt using this while following him in a replay.

You can abduct burrowed Ultralisks with your Vipers to transport them up a cliff or into an opponents base.. Unburrowed Ultralisks, however, can't be abducted. (Ultralisks lose their "Frenzied" passive ability when they burrow.)

I'm guessing Blizzard just missed this when they changed the way Frenzied works.

This will surprise many Zerg players in that it's a lot more than they think... I face a lot of Zergs who try to fight my Voids with just good fungals. It doesn't work very well and requires insane precision.

Another minimally used trick IMO is to rally probes to your MSC and recall to a new expansion.

I used to do this to saturate a third base instantaneously but it's now even more useful with the prevalence of island expands. It also enables you to get mining much more quickly from a ninja expansion without potentially revealing it by transferring probes from existing locations the 'old fashioned way'

Not very often you are able to do this, but late in game when you are maxed 200/200 and have a large bank account, you can select all your mining workers, transform them all into spine crawlers, remax with some infestors or other power unit, cancel all your spine crawlers and continue to mine. the highest I ever gotten was 200/235.

Most the time you wont have alot of left-over minerals like that though, especially if you are playing properly. Its a nice trick to keep in mind, its bound to be useful at least once in 50 games.

**Keep in mind this is borderline exploitation. I wouldn't abuse this in ladder matches out of respect for the other player.**

pros do that every now and again, it does not break the game or anything. It's no different than terrans sacking scvs and living by mules late game.

you can semi-dodge a widow mine shot by cloaking (burrowing too i think) a unit at the right time, and thus avoiding the full damage.
you will still take the 35 splash damage. usefull for banshee harass in tvt

I have a more effective way of spreading creep now. slow-walk a queen in an uncommonly walked path before you start your lair. time it to where the queen is in position by the time the lair is done and have an overlord in position and drop creep. (Now that one I have never seen!)

Not sure if this is worth mentioning but i found it interesting. Immortals Hardened Shield treats Oracles Pulsar Beam weapon as a spell that does 15 damage, even though it is a weapon that needs to be activated. So you can drain immortals shield really quickly with oracles.

Starcraft 2 HotS has 5 transformer units:
Warp Prism, Hellion/Hellbat*, Siege Tank, Thor, Viking
They all have some ability which changes their wireframe art and stats (movement speed, attacks, health etc.)

Fact: There are differences in when stats and wireframe change for different transformers during transformation.
+ Show Spoiler [Specifics] +
    Warp Prism
    • Instant stats and wireframe

    Hellion/Hellbat
    • Instant stats (name, health, armor type, attack, movement speed)
    • Wireframe at the end of transformation

    Siege Tank
    • Slight delay for both wireframe and stats when sieging
    • Instant stats and wireframe during unsiege

    Thor
    • Stats and wireframe at the end of transformation

    Viking
    • Instant attack and wireframe
    • Slightly delayed movement speed

Instant is not actually instant, as there will always be a delay. It's simply very fast.
Note that changes in the movement speed stat, does not mean that the unit can move. Every transformer is immobile until the end of transformation.

Map used: Unit Test Map, authored by meum (EU arcade map)
Own perception used to record differences in delay

*Hellbats can be seen as a different unit from Hellions, but for this facts purpose, they're not.

I've seen TLO do this along with doing the hatch trick. Its a really cool and good trick (esp. if your creep spread is lack luster)

I posted a fact about hiding a dark shrine but the whole text was too long.
Here's the short version:
Build a hidden dark shrine anywhere via warp prism+probe. Power is only needed to start building.

Please change the description to the shortened one.
This little fact advertises another stealthy aspect of the stealthy dark templar even their buildings are sneaky!

This is probably a bug, but you can semi-permanently rotate your camera to either to the left or right without holding down a key.
  1. Set Rotate Left/Right to any modfier + any key, e.g. Ctrl+Z
  2. In game, Hold down Ctrl+Z. Now release Ctrl before Z, then release Z
  3. Your camera should now be rotated to either the left or right without you holding down any key.
  4. Canceled by opening the main menu, opening a chat (default: enter), or rotating in the same direction, but releasing the key before the modifier. I.e. you'll have to be pretty quiet if you want to keep your camera rotated.
Applications:
  • Enjoy Starcraft from a new perspective.
  • Possibly avoid hidden widow mines more easily during a planned attack, e.g. Oracle to the main base/Mutas harass.
  • Abuse certain map layouts to give you a better point of view of the battlefield.

i wish blizzard would use these facts in the loading screens. please consider persuading them, jak.
do you think the "workers cant pass through sieged tanks" fact is a bug?
moreover, what about the multihit glitch/bug:

Too many BW games forced me to use Archon splash to kill lurkers. With Lurkers set to return in LotV I'd save this one for then

dont you use this already against mines?
in the master challenge, you even have to kill a dt with tank splash

I'd pitch the idea to blizzard, but they're in super crunch time mode right now (and likely will be until LotV release) and I don't want ask them to take their time away from that. I'll definitely keep it in mind for the future though!

As far as the multihit, I vaguely remember this being the old way (its possible for only one blade to hit) and they changed it to the way it is now intentionally, but Its a very vague and inaccurate memory that I'm not willing to rely on. Do you remember anything like that, or do you know what patch that was?

no, i only remember the charge patch to always guarantee a hit resulting in the bug of charging all over the map.
however, i think this is at least a glitch. if an scv is inside a bunker, it shouldnt die.

/edit: are you talking about the zealot specifically or multihit attacks in general? i was able to recontruct the same thing with two thors and a medivac. a thors hits the other one one time, the other one gets picked up but still gets hit the second time although it is in a medivac already

btw i found another bug in my last game, maybe you can look at that

There seems to be misconception about the way MULEs mine minerals, that I would like to get rid of: Multiple MULEs CAN mine from the same mineral field at the same time. That being said, MULEs will still try spread out evenly across nearby mineral fields. I confirmed this by runnnig some tests in a custom game and then in the "hots unit tester online v1.3" ( battlenet://starcraft/map/2/139457 on EU).

@nQL
I did more testing, in order for MULES to mine over each other there has to be no available mineral patches the moment they hit the patch. Its possible, but requires a loooot of mules. Gonna get some more specifics and make a video.

You should cover experience points. For you can see if a terran building burned down or got repaired through the fog of war by using experience points. Or you can see how many units you killed with a widow mine through the fog of war by showing experience points. Units and buildings have unique experience given but I have never given the time to see how much each specific unit gives and you could possibly identify what units you killed by looking at the experience.
