Dear Mods, this will be a Starcraft 2 focused thread but also a community thread. I was unsure which category it fit best. Please help it find a new home if this one is not appropriate
POLLS! Check as many or as few boxes as you like when appropriate.
Hello JaKaPaK! Here we will discuss Starcraft together with a focus on the content of JaKaTaKtv. Which content is under appreciated or over appreciated? What new project ideas do you have that we could work on together? What new content ideas do you have that I would benefit from doing personally. Your thoughts on the newest video or project. You get the idea.
This is my video response on the topic and call for collaboration and participation in forming the "Anchors" of this community going forward. Starting with the 2016 content schedule.
Other ideas? Please share all your qualitative feedback! Maybe we need another poll, or just a discussion about something. The 2016 Content Schedule starts on January 10th (will be visiting family for the holidays) so we have until then to nail down the best possible plan for consistent content for the year! Let's make this a real JaKaPaK and work together
Thanks Big J! Been seeing you around for a long time now. Any of your feedback would be greatly appreciated, really overwhelmed by the number of options for the 2016 content plan.
Personally I really love all of your educational videos (which contain some humour), rather than your pure entertainment stuff. I know this isn't necessarily what you want to hear as I get that this stuff is harder to produce per unit time of content, but for me your greatest assets are your intelligence, creativity and dedication to the scene, and in all of your educational content I learn a ton, and learning is where the joy of starcraft comes from for me.
So my preferences for 2016 would be: 1) TheCore - this is just such a fantastic piece of work (I'm on Core3.0 now and it's epic), I hope you keep coming up with new ideas and refining it and letting us know how to get that 1% extra efficiency 2) Starcraft Mechanics - these tutorials really got me running with TheCore and started me on the exciting journey of optimisation! There will be new focuses and tricks now we're in Legacy and I'd love to learn about them. 3) Tea Time - I don't always agree with all of your views on Community Updates and Patch Notes, but I love to hear them! 4) Fast Facts - always something new to learn. I binge-watched all of these one night, and got about 4 hours of sleep before work because of it
I'm guessing I'd also put TheSandbox and TheStaircase in there but I've not checked them out yet (I will).
That's not to say I don't like your other stuff (I watch the odd BroJak, and your music videos are decent), but what makes you one of my favourite content creators is your "mad scientist" stuff, where you come up with crazy ideas which..... might just work!
One other suggestion is, do you have any forums for collaboration or ideas sharing? I have a few - for example I'd love some help making a guide on "So where EXACTLY should I send my first 5 overlords in each matchup on every map?"
Haighstorm! Thanks so much for taking the time to write all that up. As far as forums for collaboration, I was thinking this thread might be a cool place for it!
Overlord placements for each map (and matchup) would be super useful. Maybe if we bug lowko or fenner on twitter they'd be down to discuss these ideas with us here.
I think the biggest step to get you forward is really concentrating on getting a good schedule and getting that known. At the moment I do watch your videos when they pop up on reddit or rarely I will just look up random videos from you to see what is going on. But it is kind of hard to just follow certain content of yours at the moment in my opinion.
My personal favorite are your "mini-videos" like Bronze science, or Fast Facts and then I really did love the Tea Time responses to the Community Feedbacks and similar videos like "What's Up with Burrow". Just balance and strategy input.
Don't know why I'm writing this here, but I really should try the Core... I've been too lazy for too long, and I know I should try it... That's also something I think I really like I guess.
I'm not too much of a fan of these "character casts". Dunno how anyone else feels about them, but that sort of stuff is too cheesy for my liking. Also, just in general when you do a straight up cast it should be somewhat good players. After all I'm mainly interested in seeing the players and good games when I watch a game of starcraft.
In general I think strategy is the "easiest" and yet most exciting way to create high level content, which is why the Day9 daily was so popular. Everyone needs a plan in SC2 and just going over what professionals do and seeing how and why it works is an easy way to create content that is helpful for everyone. I think the same could work for mechanics too, like picking a progame and when something exceptional happens like little micro situations that the normal Starcraft-dude would think about: "I can never do that", you could explain how it is done properly with as few clicks as possible and why actually everyone could do that with a little bit of practice could be fun too. So without actually copying the Day9 daily, you might want to look into doing something similar regularily using top-level replays.
Maybe try to be a little more present on talk shows? Dunno how much you are interested in that and how hard it is to get in there, but I feel like there are many shows around that could profit from having you, from TheLategame to Remax, to TL Strat Chat and whatnot. I know this is not the type of "what content should I produce for my channel"-feedback, but I believe that way you could get yourself a little more out there and it's valueable input that you can refer to in your videos.
I don't really follow you but know you're around doing .. stuff. It would help me and probably others explain what all these types of videos are like with a little explanation. I'm not really the type to just dive into watching videos I know nothing about and I usually ignore videos that explain something that could just be written (plans/announcements/guides/etc).
When you talked about TheCheeseCase, and started to give the example of the early stalkers on one base... THAT, exactly... now, I know it is a time consuming idea, but how about doing a video series out of it? grab several replays, and watch the execution of the same cheese, condensed on a 20 minutes video explain how this cheese works, against what race is better, where is not recommended, how and what to transition to next... I know strategy is not exactly your thing, but the only current videos around YT explaining how to perform these cheeses don't actually talk more than the build order, never the where's and when's...
bout other content, I watch mostly the tea times, facts, your suggestions always hit something interesting, I'm a lore nerd, so I enjoy that a lot whenever I can watch someone... the only cast I watch are the normal cast tbh... I don't follow TheCore, the TheCheeseCase, or TheStairCase, and the SC mechanic videos, as much, considering I don't play in a long time, but I watch the videos because they help me understand the game that I love watching and how its played, I was thinking about playing the game again as soon as I get LotV, and maybe then I'll be able to practice using the videos...
Hey Jak, just went through all the polls. Just wanted to drop in and say thank you for all your time and effort dedicated to this game, I love your content, it has helped me a great deal! Thank you very much and keep going!
Here's a list of things I enjoy seeing in my subscription feed on youtube:
1- Tea Time: I like these because, given I follow a lot of your projects to some extent, it's nice to know what's happening at your end - and you generally make them entertaining.
2- Fast Facts: Because it's amazingly easy, in a game as complex as SC2, to overlook some useful/interesting gameplay interaction (eg: it taking 3 reaper grenades to kill off larvae)
3- Bronze Science: I think we all need silly SC2 content, and these have been some of the best on offer. Please keep these coming for as long as possible!
4- StarCraft Mechanics: I like these for the same reasons that I like Fast Facts - anything which helps build my understanding of the game I love is something I enjoy watching.
5- Suggestions and Bugs: Although not as 'entertaining', I think these videos are just as important as mechanics videos. If only because sometimes these videos have been part of the momentum which created a change in the actual game. That is invaluable. (Unit Scan range, burrow, etc)
If there's one thing I'd add to the wishlist, it'd be something to help fill the void of Newbie Tuesdays from the day9 era. Even if it was just you talking over replays covering a similar theme of metal league difficulties, discussing what went wrong and where the players can improve.
Casting:
1- (with Drennoc) I've said this before, but I could listen to golf casts all day (Seriously, make a series of those with relaxing music/ambient sounds, and it's the perfect 'wind down after a long day at work' viewing).
However, golf casts aside, in general you and Tim work well as a casting archon, and I'd like to see more of it. And not necessarily as Caster Challenges (though those are a lot of fun) but with you both casting normally and bringing your analytical a-games to bear on replays
2- Further to that, I'd enjoy a series of replay analysis where you (either solo or with a partner caster) cast/analyse a replay with the specific intent of highlighting/dissecting/breaking down mechanics and strategies at work in the games being shown
(there is still a void to fill from day9, and while Polt's new replay analysis series is fantastic, it is primarily focussed on Terran play alas. I'd like to see more content helping articulate the complex interactions that occur in a game of SC2)
3- I'll be honest, I stopped watching Brojak and NoobGuy casts a while back. After a couple of them I realised they were humour meant for an audience which I wasn't a part of
Projects:
TheStaircase: I found this invaluable, and wouldn't want it to disappear.
TheCheesecase: Part of me desperately wants this fleshed out. But another part of me says 'Nah, stick to TheStaircase - I'll always find a way to cheese even without TheCheesecase
TheCore: A lot of players I know have benefited from this hotkey layout (PiG, NXZ, Probe being prominent examples from SEA, as well as some of my regular practice partners.) When I change from a laptop to a PC, I'll be looking to adopt this, so I don't want to see it disappear.
TheSandbox: I have obtained some of my best practice, and achieved some of my best victories, since joining this community - and that's even with my constant struggles with terrible internet and a dying laptop. Deliberate practice has improved my play incredibly.
Other:
Music/Poetry- I'm definitely excited for Starcraft-related music and poetry. I look forward to the collaboration with Temp0 you mention!
Given I come to your channel for SC2-themed content, I'm honestly likely to skip over non-SC2 content unless I've got nothing else to watch at the time or the content is obviously comedic/parodic in nature (mostly because that's my jam).
Overall, I'm glad that you continue to be passionate about SC2 and dedicated to creating content for the community. You have, in my opinion, a strong on-screen charisma which is well suited to video content. Keep at it!

I pretty much agree with every point of yours. I feel like you (Jak) should continue the character casts at least for a while though, because it is amazing practice.
One thing I would like to add has to do with the music videos. I'm not really interested in parodies, etc. but I would love original music content. Not sure though how much you want to commit to non-starcraft content because the largest part of you audience obviously comes from StarCraft.
