Just skimmed through the video. Like the ghost design, interesting.
To bad other parts of the game is terrible. Bio vs storms look like shit still for example.

There is more on my channel, but it's not super recent. It's been quiet after LotV for a while. Hopefully we'll have some tournaments rolling again.

Explanation video:


Patch 1.15

Huge thanks to Doa, Kalevi and Kireak for continuing to spend tons of time developing Starbow. This patch is basically almost all their work.

General changes
  • Attack speed of all units reduced by 7%. This has to do with reducing damage per pixel area since units are much more effective at getting in range compared to BW and also switch target faster. We felt that effective attack speed in Starbow was much faster than BW because of this and disrupted balance. Having battles last longer as a result of this is also nice for gameplay.
  • Drone and Probe has increased attack range and a very slight moving shot. SCV attack speed increased. Bringing back that BW worker micro. Note; this makes workers a lot better at holding early pressure.


Bug Fixes
  • Reaver shots do not go astray anymore, when target dies prematurely.
  • Vulture mines now work vs passive units (lurkers on passive)
  • Safeguard, autocast only targets units and photon cannons. You can still heal buildings manually.
  • Ensnare friendly fire.
  • irradiate bypasses shields.
  • Fixed a bunch of buttons.
  • A few others.


Units removed
We're trying to reduce the number of units that have a very small place in Starbow and replace them by making current units richer in usage and abilities.
  • Reapers removed.
  • Banshee removed.
  • Stalker is still removed.


Terran changes
  • Dropship boost now requires an upgrade. They can now pick up sieged siege tanks without an upgrade. This goes along the lines of each dropship in Starbow having one niche extra use for free and one speed increase feature which comes with an upgrade. For protoss the niche is the transform to a power field and it has a plain speed upgrade and for zerg it's the fact that suddenly you get many overlords and it also has a separate speed upgrade.
  • Merc Compound cost: 200m 100g (same as a factory, 9 seconds less in bt).
  • Starport has Merc Compound Or Factory requirement. Bio players can now skip factory tech if they want to and get those important science vessels / dropships faster.
  • Mercs reworked to be fast damage dealers, but more fragile than before.
    Inefficient vs zealots, but good vs dragoons. They are able to get on top of key targets by grappling onto the enemy, as well as bait storms in delicate positions.
  • Ghost reworked: Ghost enter a sniping stance using cloak. Cloak has doesn't consume energy after the activation cost. cloak renders the ghost invisible and immobile. Ghosts stay in their sniping stance to enable their weapon. Ghost sniper rifle reworked into a powerful explosive based weapon (disabled while uncloaked, can only target ground units). Cloak requires no upgrades. The notion of having a "sneaky" unit in starbow has not really worked at all. Letting go of this idea and rather focus on what bio needs to survive into the mid-game has helped us refine the ghost design.
  • Ghost academy bt up to 67 seconds.
  • Nukes require fusion core now.
  • Ghost pdd reworked: Now renamed as Sensor Drone, it no longer nullifies enemy missiles. It doesn't have vision, but works as a sensor with relatively low range. It allows allied biological units (except workers) to move faster within it's reach. Sensor drones are invisible and Lasts till destroyed.
  • Optical flare nerfed with higher cost and shorter effect duration.


Zerg Changes
  • Eruptors reworked: Currently called Swarm Lords. They still have their role as AA specialist, better at dealing with smaller ships and added utility against zerglings.
    Their AA Attacks have been divided in a Single target AA and an auto-cast ability that deals slowly un-stackable dps in a static area. Both the weapon damage and the spell damage are heavily affected by armor.
    Their AG have been reworked to be a low range attack with very small AoE, that can shine against clamps of very small units like zerglings.
  • Vipers abilities tweaked: BW Parasite ability added.
    Ensnare slows down attack speed to 50% but movement speed to only 20%. The spell lasts longer and now affects friendly units.
    Spawn Locusts Increased cost to 150. It now deals 200 damage so it can now guaranteed kill more types of units (lurkers tanks etc). Locusts last for longer.
  • Guardians Attack range reduced by one. Movement speed increased to be the same as carriers.


Protoss Changes
  • Sentinel attack range reduced to 4.
  • Disruption Web moved onto scouts. It no longer requires an upgrade, becoming available earlier in the game.
  • New unit added to robotics facility, the Void Relic: It has the ability to become invisible and immobile while granting long vision. It can attack both ground and air units. It's weapon takes a bit to lock onto a target, but the unit can attack while moving as long as it stays near the target.


Other things to note and the future
There have been two main notions which has helped us as a guide for Starbow development:
1. We want to add new options into the game compared to Stacraft: Brood War. Robo openings against Zerg, Bio openings against Protoss. Beating a Zerg in a longer ZvZ without mutalisks. etc. This allows new players to explore more options and even catch more traditional BW players off guard. But we still want the classic BW strategies that were most interesting to be viable.
2. Perhaps unpopular for some, there were some things in BW which was less fun and not so well designed. We also try to focus on discovering and removing those parts as well.

For future patches. One thing we started working on was the warp gate and it's design/purpose. We're not too happy with current warp gate design, but we did not have time to make any proper changes. We will bring back warp gate design to its core and try to understand why it's in Starbow in the first place. Once that is complete we may make some design changes to it according to our design principles.

I really hoped this would gain more traction. There was a time when there were weekly tournaments and even though I play brood war I would tune in. The youtube channel is also all but deserted and apparently it's the same for the ladder?

Have you guys thought about ways to increase popularity?

You can play vs AI and it's okish. Better than how it was default thanks to DecOfCafee

I've though about the same as well, but getting a hold of Korean BW ex-pro's is a tad tricky.

Don't use the ladder. It's somewhat broken, I can't find a coder to fix it and it's not enough people anyway. Rather join the skype group (PM for details) or use our discord: https://discord.gg/0mnjXjS2e2a7YclO and ask for games there.

Thanks for the shoutout Xiphias. It's best to set the AI to "Very Hard" or "Cheater Resources" and "Economic focus".

It macros, expands, and attacks decently when set to those levels.

This looks fun, I might try to play a few games if I find the time during the weekend. Haven't played a game of sc2 since campaign during lotv release, but this made me miss it a bit hehe
