When was the last time a startup team succeeded in SC2? What about a startup team in Korea? This stuff only ever panned out well back in the very beginning, when NO ONE was actually well-established in SC2. Damn near every new team since then that tried to break into the elite went bankrupt and imploded in short order. Right now, everyone's staked their claims on the pro-scene with no slices of the pie left over. Unreasonably optimistic sponsors are all but gone and Korea's scene is contracting due to the lack of Korean fans and thus Korean sponsors. We aren't growing, but we certainly aren't dying. We're consolidating, bringing things down to a reasonable level. What we were doing before was only possible due to over-optimism and a sort of "gold rush" mentality. Right now, we are becoming sustainable. SC2 isn't the Wild West anymore, we need to tighten our belts and prepare for a good dose of reality. Having said that, there is a natural (and much smaller than some people would have you think) decline in fan base associated with the initial excitement of release dying down. That still doesn't mean SC2 is dying, though; most competitive games out there that managed to acquire a fan base as big as SC2 at one point manage to last for years and years after their final update until their pro scene finally sputters out. SC2 is still being actively updated, has another expansion pack on the way and is most likely going to get a sequel as well. We're the only RTS on the market with a sizable pro scene and release date recent enough to be tolerable to the modern gamer. We aren't going to "die" until at least a year after the release of LotV, and even then there will still be competitive players who play the game because they love the game and the thrill of victory.

On a more positive note, now that sc2 is dead in korea, this finally means foreigners can compete once again! sc2 died in NA because all the foreigners got roflstomped by the koreans. people stopped watching. however, now that korean teams are disbanding and all their players retiring, fewer koreans are gonna be able to afford to go overseas and pwn the foreigners. granted at this point its too late now that mlg has dropped sc2 and ipl died and everyone has moved on, but the few foreigners who still do play can finally get their chance in the dwindling spotlight.

MLG announced their return to SC2 (before you made your post, might I add). They're also going to host a major tournament that specifically focuses on the NA scene and its players. What was that about a dwindling spotlight?
