Ok so my notebook is crap but I manage to play on it on lowest settings possible and get like 45-50 fps. What else in game I can do to increase performance?
I heard changing variables.txt helps, but dont know what can I change? I found only two things so far:
alternateLowTextures=0 shadowmapsize=1
What else?
Bonus questions: what these below do? can I change them somehow to increase performance?
bakeTerrainLighting=1 fastFOW=1 use20shaders=1 waterflipbook=1 waterrendertargetsize=768 TerrainTextureSize=480 lightingLevel=1 lightmap=1

Don't forget to check that your laptop isn't running any weird preinstalled "utility" programs that computer manufactures like HP like to force on your system, they just eat up performance for no gain at all.
|
Also its important to have the power saving setting to something along the lines of 'no saving, full power'. Because the power saving modes eat alot of perrformence.

if you are only hitting 50fps with those specs,I would personally invest to build a new pc for like $400/600.
I know its not the answer you're looking for but damn dude how can you enjoy playing sc2 like that?

I have kinda bad Laptop aswell. Only can play on LOW still 60fps with no lags. Some ppl say how can you play on low its so ugly. Dude graphics is not for what i play games for.

Im playing with a crap com that cant even work on low setting. With this changes it works perfectly except the ground is totally blank. 60 fps smooth. You can easily spot Widow mines but not clock units like DT and banshee. Remember to backup your variables first.
TerrainTextureHiResCacheSize=20 TerrainTextureLowResCacheSize=20 TerrainTextureSize=4

Hey haaz - I'm a lower than low purist and have been always. I'm wondering what "shadowmapsize=1" effects and if you could point me to where you learned about changing this variable? I'd like to check it out for myself. I'd be really grateful - ty. Cool thread btw - the guy above me sounds crazy haha - I'm gonna PM him to ask for a screenshot of that.

50 FPS is perfectly fine to play. This is not a shooter.

50 FPS is perfectly fine to play. This is not a shooter. fine until high masters / GM... I don't see any reason why it shouln't be enough there too. Starcraft 2 isn't about timing that much. The latency when playing online will always be higher then the differrence between 50 FPS and 100 FPS. (because there is pretty much none)

hmm i play on 40 fps, and it makes a diff in bane wars at that level, though perhaps its my internet connection as much as the fps.
Though i thought pretty much everything in Sc2 is about timing,...

A player with 20 fps vs a player with 60 fps, the higher fps will almost always win because of the time it takes to see each other on screen.
Now with an RTS like SC2, fps doesn't make a whole lotta difference except in large micro wars like Ling/bane wars. Obviously, you want an fps that you can coherently see (preferably 30 fps), but the difference between 50 fps and 100 fps won't make a difference.

Blizzard doesn't make it easy for people, do they?
I imagine UI would make it so much easier, just imagine a list of options. E.g.
'Unit graphics' [x] Low [ ] Medium [ ] High
Then SC modifies variable to: unitModel = 0; // 0 for low, 1 mid, 2 high
Boom! No need to understand what each variable in variables.txt does.
Time for community to wake up and ask for this.
Alternatively, some user solution can be made (configurator) that asks you questions based on which it generates variables.txt, but the creator first needs to understand variables.txt very well.

Yeah its a good point, the margins are way finer in an fps. But i would argue once you get into the mid game and later where you can be stringing together complex sequences of actions at 250 apm and higher, having even a few of those actions delay or not register can really screw you up eg Ctrl clicking a group of running speedlings or setting a rally point. Having to redo stuff as the latency has caused an inaccurate/null action like that makes the game really really difficult.

I changed variables.txt options:
+ Show Spoiler +creepnormalmap=0 creepQuality=0 creepreflection=0 creepshadow=0 creeptrans=0
fog=0
GraphicsOptionEffectsDetail=0 GraphicsOptionLightingQuality=0 GraphicsOptionModelQuality=0 GraphicsOptionMovies=0 GraphicsOptionOverallQualityVer7[14]=5 GraphicsOptionPhysicsQuality=0 GraphicsOptionPortraits=1 GraphicsOptionPostProcessing=0 GraphicsOptionReflections=0 GraphicsOptionShaderDetail=0 GraphicsOptionShadowQuality=1 GraphicsOptionSSAO=0 GraphicsOptionTerrainQuality=0 GraphicsOptionTextureQuality[2]=0
halo=0 hdr=0
shadowmapsize=1 shadows=0
spec=0 splatlod=0 ssao=0
TerrainTextureSize=128
waterrendertargetsize=2 watershadow=0
I get increase from 50 to 80 fps GG Thanks :-D
Why blizzard did not add this options in game?

Mhm, i changed the alternateLowTextures to zero, but i still got 50 fps at the start, and 30-40 later on, but its quite fine for me.
Does someone know if there is a differents between Fullscreen and Fullscreen (windowed) perfomens wised? Would be interesting.
