The regional tournaments without Koreans involved were lacking the prestige beforehand. Now they will get serious.

Guys, Mike Morhaime said this is a good thing. With Polt, Jaedong, and all these other great Koreans playing in North America, the actual North Americans will no longer have to travel to Korea to practice with the best players in the world. This is how we globalize e-sports and make the white people better at Starcraft. Instead of making them travel to Korea to get their ass kicked and get better, Blizzard is bringing the Koreans to their houses to get their ass kicked.

I do sense sarcasm, but isn't it kind of true? Instead of consolidating all the "high" level players in one spot, fighting over a relative handful of opportunities (both for Koreans and traveled foreigners), its now spread out over 3 regions. More opportunities for foreign players to compete in a meaningful tournament without having to spend 2 years in Korean team house to earn the privilege of attending a qualifer, while Korean pros who have already busted their ass have the option to participate in a major tournament with fewer of them getting drowned out quietly in unknown qualifier matches or "stepping on each others feet".

They shouldn't hand the biggest award in SC2 to anybody for just happening to live in a certain place, but this expands the the amount of potential participants. More exposure, more reason to get better, and better competition. first couple years will probably be more or less Korean domination, but this is far more inclusive and would encourage more foreigners to push harder then saying "go to korea or suck"

I agree with this sentiment. I'm not totally convinced but it's worth the shot and I think it might work.

Honestly this news is pretty fucking disgusting. Once again the SC2 scene in North America will continue to stagnate rather than develop. So while its great to see your C league (Nestea excluded) StarCraft 2 pros who couldn't cut it in Korea come to play in the American championships, this really needs to be reserved for North and South American players. Blizzard you guys need to fix this system, its already an issue.

But we don't need to see Koreans who can't qualify in Korea come to America to steal something that isn't theirs.

So all that money that didn't exist beforehand naturally belongs to foreigners... can't let the better players have it!!!

Catz said it better than I did.
Catz's thoughts

You want to grow a scene or do you want it to stagnate and shrink? We're going through a revival of SC2 after the last 8-10 months of crappy games. But lets go back to what it was.

Can't help but notice that Root is choosing to let one of the Korean players play on NA.

Can someone please explain how this ruins anything?

Keep in mind that a GSL style NA/EU tournament with similar prize money didn't exist before this.

Keep in mind that every country had a WCS last season and Koreans were only playing in the Korean WCS. Thus, non Koreans could actually win something...

So now they actually have to play better players to win something...

Oh no!

I'm sorry but I'm having a real hard time sympathizing with all this entitlement coming out of the foreign scene right now.

There will always be international tournaments with tons of top koreans stomping foreigners, but many wanted WCS to be the starcraft olympics. National champions being sent to the world final etc. Would you not enjoy that? Some regional competission leading up to a world final on top of all the international stuff?
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

The better way to get non-Koreans to win tournaments is to establish a continously running tournament structure where they can meet good players and get better. This does that.

I don't think it works quite like that. I doubt if I took a HS Basketball team and put them up against the Miami Heat, they'd come out a better team. They'd come out a team that just got shit on by a bunch of better players.

It's not like they're going to practice against them.

They're just going to get shit on and become demoralized.

Yes and no.
Different people learn differently.
Some players like Naniwa learn from being thrown into the deep end and improve by wanting to better the people who constantly overshadow you. However there are also players who need to be spoon fed.

But one thing all players can mutually agree on is proper management and coaching. Now this is what foreign teams lack and absolutely needs. Refer to the Coach Park effect for reference.

And i think it is fair. Foreigners coming to GSL have always mentioned that due to months long nature of GSL, they have to play at a disadvantage due to culture shock, lack of training infrastructure, lack of team, jetlag, etc

Now the Koreans will have these disadvantages( plus latency for online stages of the tournaments). If despite these advantages the Koreans still dominate all, then they deserve it.

Definitely.

I don't understand this, WCS Europe for example was to measure the best european player, and worked pretty well at that. Now next season best european player will be X korean and you will be with your head wondering what the fuck just happened.

Most importantly, it is work in progress. Maybe the EU/US teams will realize that the best option may not be to let all their Korean players cannibalize the US scene.

Now, since MANY of our BEST moving to EU/NA.. let's see if YOUR best can beat our BEST if not don't QQQQQQQ!@_@

We can't beat your "best" because NA or EU don't have the same infrastructure to compete against your "best." I only put the quotation marks because none of your "best" like Flash, Innovation, Soo, Fantasy, etc. are playing in NA, its a bunch of B team Kespa players, Slayers rejects, and EG-TL (currently in last place in Proleague) wanting to play in other regions. So lets be honest, you're not sending your "best." But your B team is still better and its not creating a healthy e-sports environment in North America and the EU.

I wonder if every Axiom/EG-TL player gets into ro16, will they forfeit GSTL/Proleague or WCS

And what would be the consequences.

sorry if this is a dumb question but , for those that choose to play in that region does that mean they have to move there? being the the WCS is year long do they need like "working Visas" to prove they are committed to that region ? that way there isn't any flip flopping. sorry all this news is new to me! but wow sooo many good players!

Well, good bye foreigners
I root for Euro Zergs, NA Protoss* and Korean Terrans. (Any North American who has beat a Korean Pro as Protoss counts as NA Toss)
