Touches of sci-fi horror would work even better now with the improved graphics. Rgar being said, figq original post had a very good point : the storytelling techniques in video games need to get away from written dialogue (PS:T probably being one of the highest point of this technique, but also adapted to a video game) to more visual storytelling technique. But being visual doesn't mean being dumb. Also I'm not convinced lots of CGI epic stuff is the way to go - after all, given the budget they have the video game industry will never go toe to toe with the movie industry on that point. They need to exploit the fact that it's a game, that the pacing is going to be longer. Probably need to look for writing techniques from the TV industry in fact, where the rythm is different. That's a very interesting debate in my opinion, but alas I guess for the next few years at least, very few people will focus on that... Edit : @Adreme you shoudl watch more then. There are some extremely smart B-grade movies, especially from Hollywood golden age...

Every time she interacted with a villain, Raynor or zeratul though it was cringe worthy. When dealing with zerg she was the queen of blades with a hint of humanity, with anyone else she acted like some mentally unstable anime chick.

The Psi Disrupter is causing me some very serious problems. Although I've regained control of my forces here, it's taking more and more concentration just to keep them in line. Raynor : Aww... My heart's breaking for you, Kerrigan. Now exactly why was it that you asked Fenix and I to bring Mengsk to you? Kerrigan : Are you still suspicious that I'll kill him for abandoning me to the Zerg? I've gotten over it, Jim. We can't afford to let petty hatreds jeopardize our plans for the UED. Mengsk : That's reassuring. Kerrigan : Arcturus... I pressume you found your cold-sleep chamber... accommodating? Mengsk : What is the meaning of this, Kerrigan? Kerrigan : Straight to the point, huh? I was hoping to chat. It's been awhile. -- Kerrigan : Hah. Ever the politician. All right, 'Emperor', if you help me destroy the Disrupter, I'll help you retake Korhal from the UED. -- Yes, Kerrigan is just burning with revenge. Not. BW was alive universe, not some one-sided emos attacking each other on sight. Seriously how is it even possible to not read BW script before writing it for SC2. Metzen must have been drunk when he wrote it.

Touches of sci-fi horror would work even better now with the improved graphics. I would have liked a bit more horror touch (in a zerg campaign), yes. That was a missed opportunity. On the other hand, it would have been predictable and expected. I certainly didn't expect the kind of love story I got, and it worked well for me. In the end, it all comes down to if you enjoyed the campaign or not. I'm one of those who thoroughly enjoyed it, even if acknowledging all kinds of flaws (honestly, fewer flaws than I was mentally prepared for - I was pleasantly surprised). For example, all the travelling to different planets was pretty cool. It created the atmosphere of a real space game.

Well then you see her holding his gun against her head. How the flying fuck does Jim still have a weapon and ammo when he is being held captive on a maximum security prison ship? TBH I didn't really think of that. I DID however notice he still had his smokes :p

I figured what Mengsk did was just toss him into that bulletproof cell without any fanfare. Yes, it doesn't make sense why he would keep his gun, but it's the best thing I can come up with. Find my random thoughts and impressions ahead. Pretty disjointed set of opinions and such, with a little bit of commentary about what's been discussed in this thread so far. I enjoyed the campaign. An earlier poster said that anyone who enjoyed the campaign/story did not play BW. I am one such person. I feel no rage or anger over apparent retcons or changing character motivations, etc, so I don't have that baggage going in. The missions were pretty darn easy, and I'm by no means a StarCraft master. While I was playing on Normal *ducks thrown bottle* I completed nearly every mission with just mass zerglings, with maybe an aberration or ultralisk thrown in (raptor strain + attack speed upgrade + infinite free respawn zerglings = win win win). Air units? Kerrigan. In fact, Kerrigan probably made the missions a lot easier than they should have been. Wanting to learn how to play zerg via the campaign, I was a little disappointed that the Spawn Larva mechanic was completely unused. I thought they were going to introduce it later, but it just never came up. In fact, Queens pretty much don't do anything that they do in multiplayer: Spawn Creep Tumor is a cooldown instead of energy, and Transfuse is autocast by default. I did build a macro hatch (the "build 2 drones for free" = more win), sometimes a 2nd, because most of the time you only had one expansion to go to. The evolution missions, on the other hand, were just tutorial, you-can't-lose-because-we-send-more-units missions, hardly worth the effort. Speaking of effort, anyone notice how there were no (as far as I remember) achievements that required Hard difficulty or higher? Seems like this campaign is catering to the more casual crowd, as I recall spending a lot more time in WoL missions (though that could be due to the fact that I was new to SC at that point). Speaking of Casual, remember how in WoL you could replay missions, but you would go back to the upgrades/etc you had at the time the mission began? Not anymore! The Master Archives lets you go back to any mission with fully-upgraded Kerrigan, etc, so going back to get better times, get achievements, etc has never been easier. They sure found a way to get us to use that "Select Army Units" hotkey! "Oh, here you go, have 100 more units, all across the map." F2 + a-move to victory! That's one thing the campaign did pretty well, I think: I sure did feel like I was controlling an unstoppable, infinite swarm. There wasn't as much to do in the Leviathan as there was on the BC in WoL, but that was understandable. I was really hoping for a place within akin to the bar where Kerrigan's underling units hung out. It wouldn't have a juke box, of course, but it would be neat to see (even if it didn't make sense; I dunno if zerg are "mindless" or not). I found the dialog / interactions good enough to enjoy the missions. I really wish it didn't fall into "let's go to this planet, on one small chunk of land. Whoop, planet done!" syndrome. Planets are huge, and sticking to one location and implying that what is done in the tiny location is done to the whole planet is a little meh. Almost every sci-fi setting is guilty of this. I'm glad I played, and will probably hop back in to complete achievements, but will probably stick to multiplayer from this point on, until I feel the urge to fight For The Swarm once again (I play Terran). Oh, were there more pre-rendered cinematics than WoL? It sure felt like it, and I liked that. Regardless of the content or what you think, Blizzard cinematics are so pretty to watch.

Sure, they could have made Jim wear some prisoner costume, but why bother, as Mengsk likely wouldn't bother either. Speaking of effort, anyone notice how there were no (as far as I remember) achievements that required Hard difficulty or higher? There are some, look in the very last tab of the Achievements list. They aren't shown in the 3 buttons in mission recaps though. But yeah, the campaign is deliberately made easier, just like they said they would. Fine with me.

The dialogues were fucking painful to watch. Do the characters have any lines other than "You are going to die" *after kerrigan just destroyed their entire army* and apparently brute strength and will can pretty much overcome any thing cough *My hate is more than enough" *cough*. The plot were fucking stupid. They spent an entire expansion just to undo what they did last expansion and shit out the final boss just to have some hype. In between, nothing significant happen other than mostly going to different places killing shit. Also, what's up with the new recent trend of introducing new random "important" characters into the story? what's up with the trend of completely changing characters personality? Suddenly, SCII story is more about love story between raynor and kerrigan when they barely had anything prior to wol or even hots? I was hoping Metzen could redeem himself after diablo 3 and Wol, but wow, this the worst coming from him yet (or maybe tie with diablo 3) EDIT: messed up d2 and d3

Quite dissapointed, I feel like WoL campaign was much much better. The whole story : I need to gather the swarm to kill Mengsk. And...that's it...There's nothing new after, so we know the whole story since the beginning. Nothing happens! It is simply a straight line. ![]() Also, we are only playing Zerg for the whole campaign? In WoL we could play all races at least. That was a lot of fun.

One of the most original/deep storylines(in gaming) told looks more like a book than a video game(Planescape:Torment). EDIT: Also on Duran.. From SCWiki + Show Spoiler + "Emil" may be derived from Latin Aemilius, a family name, which means "to rival, to emulate, to copy." Maybe it refers to Narud merely being another servant of Amon, or just the fact that he's a shapeshifter. Could go either way.
