Though i have heard balance problems on the Neo and Whirlwind, but that could just affect those at the highest level. Who knows.
I feel with this expansion the things blizzard need to work on is the map pool dynamics/rotation. There are some awesome maps being made with only a few playing them... saying that the arcade is in desperate need of some attention (which i hear they are on the job) .
Would be cool to have pics of those maps, to check any blizzard change. From Taeja stream i noticed that on Newkirk Precinct they actually removed the destructible rocks at the center map bases ramps. Star Station gas geysers look very hot too.

Notice how it has 4 Blizzard maps and 4 GSL/Kespa maps. Someone wants non-Korean comunity mapmaking to just die.
Again, this map pool is actually good, but there is something weird going on with removing CK
Cloud Kingdom is awfu these days and has been around foreverl, I hope they get rid of Daybreak next <3
Overall a nice solid map pool to start the game with <3

I've never liked Cloud Kingdom, it's got pretty much everything I hate about WoL maps. I know it's considered one of the best maps, but I've never liked it and in HoTS it's actually really broken considering blink all ins are better and drops are faster.

How are blink allins better? They increased research time by 30 seconds.
I'm really glad that Antiga is out. I hated that map. Cloud Kingdom I have mixed feelings about. I really enjoyed TvT and TvZ on it, but hated TvP. I felt like it was really hard to drop on Cloud since the 3rd did a pretty good job of defending the main from drops.
WHIRLWIND!? TEH SWOON! Neo Planet S could be cool to play as well.
Surprised Daybreak is in but Cloud is out though. Honestly, they were great maps, they've had their time, but enough. It's time to move on, burn both of them. I do not want either in tournaments nor my ladder anymore. They're just too damn old.
Metropolis deserves to come back. I want my full season with it D:

Ohana, antiga and cloud kingdom gone. Whirlwind, neo planet s and bel'shir added. Daybreak still around. Map pool is looking pretty good for us Zerg players.
My knee jerk reaction is "VETO THIS VETO THAT VETO THE OTHER" ... but then i remember its heart of the swarm with new units new builds and new experiences. So for the first season i wont veto anything while i'm expirimenting.
Looking at the map pool, I wonder will I even play ladder in HotS. People whining about Daybreak/Cloud : those are the most balanced maps, what's the point of removing them and adding new bad maps? Belshir and Whirlwind are terrible maps in many ways.

Neo Planet S is a good addition though.
Those same "good maps" have stagnated the metagame for over a year. This game desperately needs new life breathed into it. What's the point in a balanced game if nobody's around to play it?
I knew they would put Neo Planet S after that epic match of Flash vs Life on that map. I'm actually quite surprised to see Bel'shir Vestage and Whirlwind but that's good to see blizzard putting gsl maps into the ladder pool.
On the veto, I'll probably veto Korhal City, don't really enjoy that map, just feel bad playing on it.
Newkirk (which is terrible), Daybreak (which is old and terrible) and Korhal City. I will suffer through Whirlwind and Star Station if I never have to play a game on Daybreak again.

It's not a completely new map -- I believe it's Newkirk District with a bunch of the destructible rocks removed.

I'm glad that there are Zerg players out there, admitting that. These 3 maps where relatively fair, as seen in tournament winratios (while I see that Antiga is Terran favored in TvP - YES!). Whirlwind and Bel'shir are a gift to Zerg. And Daybreak.... oh good god, when will we get rid of it D:
I still think this is ridiculously in favor of Zerg players but with balance the way it is at the moment I'm welcome to it. Regardless I really, really fucking think they should bring back the S1 map pool on April Fools. Would be worth it just for the forum rage that day.
Daybreak is the best map on that list, what are people complaining about?
Korhal City, Whirlwind and Star Station are god awful and will get instant veto. I wish I had an extra one for Akilon Wastes. No cloud kingdom or Ohana in favor of these? wtf blizz lol
i'm a bit concerned about these maps from a protoss perspective tbh. it's nice that the mappool is more diverse now, but somehow i would like to veto half of these maps :/ whirlwind and bel'shir are quite good for zerg imo. on star station the third base is extremely wide open and it is basically impossible to secure a third base in pvz. neo planet s and daybreak wouldn't be my choice against zerg either and pvp on korhal city is quite bad as well.
i don't dont know...maybe it is just me :D
will see how the new units and abilities work out on these maps. so maybe it isn't as bad
Why do people hate Newkirk so much? That's easily my favorite map. Reminds me a lot of Ride of the Valkyries, which was by far my favorite BW map. I think it's great, but maybe I'm missing something? haha.
This map pools looks gorgeous though. I'm so fucking excited to get home from work and play on the european server.... haha
Cloud Kingdom gone but we still have Daybreak (lol, I was so close to type in Gaybreak...) I feel like CK is so much more interesting with all of its attack paths and base layout. Out of the new maps (HotS Beta maps) Star Station and Korhal City are too big I don't like maps that continue to infinity and allow macroing up in your own end of the map without any threat of opponent being able to surprise you.
WHERE IS CLOUD KINGDOM. it is like the best map. I like it the best. trade out belshir vestige and newkirk for Cloud kingdom and Metolopolis LE (metropolis?)
I thought this was a final release. Star Station. Ha. It would be a shame to hurt the Blizzard map making team's feelings by removing their horrible maps. I hope pro games aren't played on some of these maps, at least.
Good to see new maps, but some of the maps from beta simply aren't very good. I'd like to see cloud kingdom in place of star station for starters.
Also Metropolis was in the ladder for a few days...Blizzard was going to fix the lag issues with it but I guess they forgot about it? I'd much rather have it than korhal city or star station.
Really impressed that they put in Kespa/GSL maps. You can tell they are trying to help the pros so they can practice on ladder more instead of having to always make custom games in order to play those maps. It's good for the game in general because the causal fans who watch Flash v Jaedong on Planet S can go and play their own ZvT on Planet S.... Cool. Interesting that Cloud Kingdom is out. There's probably a reason for that. Widow mines on the ridge behind the 4th base?
People have really low standards if they think THIS is a good map pool.
Map pool isn't the worst it could possibly be, but it's pretty awful. Star Station, Korhal, and Newkirk are all laughably bad, and Whirlwind is not great (will still heavily favor Z in TvZ due to the sheer openness of the map). Daybreak is fine, but it's too similar to Bel'Shir Vestige to have both in the pool. Pick one and get rid of the other.

I think you're somewhat wrong... ladder maps determine absolutely crap for competitive play, because the tournament map pools are remarkably slim on ladder maps. Unless they're maps that were added to the ladder AFTER being in competitive play. (Or, I guess, when WoL first came out.)
Neo planet is one of those maps that would be called "worst map ever" if it was made by Blizzard. Hard to get/keep a third, small, and the middle is just plain weird. But hey its made by Kespa, must be good huh?
I'm vetoing korhal city and star station so far. Didn't like those maps to begin with and games in the beta didn't convince me otherwise.
Well if this was WoL, i'd be raging as this would be an incredibly zerg biased map pool as well as a fairly boring one. Not sure what it'll be like here though so will wait and see, i don't think I'll veto anything to begin with. Always loved watching TvT on Whirlwind, so hopefully it's as fun to play also. Personally, I never really saw what the fuss is about with Cloud Kingdom, always seemed like a rather boring map to me, but I guess i'm in the minority there

I actually like smaller and more involving maps, but the general opinion has always been against them.
Almost want to veto Starstation just because of the layout reminding me of piece of shit D3. Glad Daybreak is still in though, good to have one map you can always rely on.
ITT people judging maps because of a medivac speed boost
Guys, it's gonna be hard to make a map where the medivac speed boost isn't efficient. It's a new tool to the terran arsenal you should try to deal with it instead of whining on the map.
On March 12 2013 17:52 algue wrote: It's a new tool to the terran arsenal you should try to deal with it instead of whining on the map.
I agree. It is more likely that they nerf the sick speedvac instead of removing maps. But before that happens we will see some terran domination by those, who do multi-drops. But seriously, don't they check how stupid leaving close position on some maps is?

Most of these maps would be consider huge a year or two ago. Maybe that WoL map/metagame influenced it too much...
I think it could be down to the fact where units move so fast, you can't have a good map with spread out bases without it being massive.
Maps being too small means base trades happen far more often as well (as e.g. Ohana, your bases are all on top of each other), as by the time you get home to defend you've lost everything.
I'm so happy that Cloud Kingdom is gone. While widely considered as one of the best maps of WoL I had a ~ 20 % win chance on it. We just never got used to each other, the map and I.
I don't think I'll vote down any map. Never did that, don't know why I should start now.

I was honestly hoping that they would remove all the old maps, including Daybreak, but I'm happy that most of the ancient (Antiga Shipyard) is out. They have become so stale and boring to watch. Will be vetoing the hell out of Korhal City. I don't like anyone having that easy of an early expansion.

The expo in Korhal City is actually much harder to take than the expos on most maps, for a couple reasons:
1) The wide ramp. This makes it basically impossible to early expand in ZvZ, makes 1-rax FE dangerous against early pools in TvZ, and makes it almost necessary to double scout if you are playing PvZ. Then in PvP, fast expos are a lot harder b/c you can't defend a 4-gate with sentries, it's like Tal'darim in that regard.
2) Wide area for reapers and blink stalkers to get in. Fast expansions in ZvT, TvP, and TvT are a lot more dangerous b/c of this.

I don't consider one base play bad gameplay. I agree that if you play only on Desert or Scrap it can get bad after a time. But getting up to 3 base and then taking one fight isn't the good gameplay either. I think the creativity to try something new and the ability to adapt is what can make the game so much fun. I can even imagine to see games on even more different maps, like an island map or something like Arkanoid, which also led to interesting games I think. If it gets too bad you can remove the map again but it shouldn't be removed for minor imbalances. I would pay for a tournament consisting of a wide variety of "bad" maps.
Just realized, very strangely, that the half bases on Bel'Shir Vestige were removed. Not turned into full bases, they actually just aren't there anymore. Blizzard really is stubborn about their 8 min/2 gas rule.

Cloud Kingdom is certainly not a new map, but it's almost certainly the best SC2 map ever made and allows for such a wide variety of styles (especially from Terran, but from the other races also).
RIP Cloud Kingdom, you will be missed.
As for the ones that ARE there, I haven't played enough games on them to say for sure, but by Blizzard standards this is a decent map pool.
I honestly don't think I'm going to miss Cloud Kingdom much at all. I had the damndest time holding the Sentry/Immortal all ins on that map. With that gone, I have an extra veto left after Korhal CIty and Akilon Wastes for whatever dumbass map Blizz decides to throw into the pool next month.
I'm reallllllllllllllly into Neo Planet S though, I've already had a few super awesome games on that map.
I hope Neo Planet Z explodes soon. Feels like you are playing TvZ in WoL on a balanced map. So not as bad in HotS as it was in WoL. So far I only ended up as Zerg on this map though on ladder.
This early in the game and with an unsettled metagame I think it's funny so many people are raging so hard about map balance. I'd rather get new, interesting maps with new tilesets than the same old, overused, maybe balanced maps.
I wouldn't mind getting Bifrost or even Archanoid in there, they'd be fun (or at least different) to play on. Maybe in a month or so if balance is really bad on them they can take them out, but we'll never know til we try. Early in the metagame is the best time to experiment, so it's disheartening for me to see everyone wanting the same cookie cutter balanced-for-my-race maps.
I won't have HoTS until Thursday but I plan on vetoing Bel'shir vestige and Star station as a random player because I just don't like them. Have you guys been liking Bel'Shir? At the pro level it just doesn't seem to be a very balanced map in WoL but I guess that could have changed. Overall just not a big fan of the planet Bel'Shir and any of its maps. Both are ok so far for me as random
The only map I don't like is Korhal City. Easy natural but crazy wide ramp. Main is too large and with a boring shape. I played a ZvP on it and a 14pool can make FE for Protoss really annoying.
Really not liking Whirlwind. May end up unvetoing Daybreak and vetoing that instead. Whirlwind is straight up too big. I haven't had any fun games on it yet, even against Terran (my favourite matchup is PvT).
I also really miss Cloud Kingdom, it wasn't perfect but it was my second favourite map in the last WoL map pool after Ohana. I guess I just like smaller maps. I wish Cloud Kingdom was in the pool instead of Whirlwind.
I actually don't mind Bel'Shir Vestige. Thirds are a bit of a pain on it against Zerg but at least against Terran and Protoss it feels fine. I've had a couple decent PvTs on it already. I've only had 3 games on Neo Planet S so I will have to see. 2 were PvP coinflips (I went DT, they went Blink, I won) but against Terran I got absolutely demolished by drops (Though I am pretty sure he was at least a Master Terran who was just making his way back into Master). Those mine drops are so good even when prepared against. Though 20 games in one day is a lot for me so I am probably not playing the best right now. Weirdly enough I have only had 2 games on Akilon Wastes, which sucks because I like that map and would have much rather had 6 games on it than Whirlwind. The moral of the story is I really need to learn some PvZ builds because winging it isn't working anymore.
After 8 ladder games, I have only played 3 of the maps.
I really like Akilon Flats. I am currently undefeated on it (this season). I feel very safe on this map and the layout complements my style of play, the familiarity of it from last season obviously helps.
I've lost my games on Bel'Shire Vestige and that weird 2v2 shared base map (I don't remember the name). I will probably veto it since it does not feel like an authentic 1v1 experience.
I did not play a single game of HOTS during the Beta. I can't believe how widow mines and reapers have changed TvT. The other matchups basically feel the same so far.

TvZ, TvT, PvP, ZvP, ZvZ have all changed a lot...
I'm sure. That statement was only a personal observation from the few games I have played so far. I don't play or watch any of the non-Terran matchups unfortunately.
What are the major differences now with TvZ? My only TvZ so far was on that weird map with shared bases. I've experimented a little with the hellbats and new medivac boost.

TvZ is very different if you play mech and lategame I'd say a mech transition is pretty important due to how good ultras are. The big changes in the terran matchups IMO are only really if you go mech/bio with widowmine. Other than that, especially TvP bio is pretty much exactly the same.

Vipers and widow mines make the matchup insanely fast paced and positional. Ultralisk/viper has pretty much replaced brood lord infestor
Well star station and korhal suck reaaaally hard, but other than that it's the best map pool ever. Yeah whirlwind/bel'shir vestige aren't 100% balanced, but in my eyes they are still about a hundred times better than ohana/antiga/entombed. And Planet S has quickly become my favorite map, it's soooo good, but that may just be my hate for xel naga noob towers.
Haven't played all these maps yet but one thing I know is that the huge main in NewKirk is basically impossible to defend from mutas as a terran when you have to run back and forth from main to natural to third...ugh.
I am not disappointed one bit that Ohana was removed from several tournaments and the ladder. I know it has produced a number of great games, but even I realized that games were getting a little too stale these past few months. It served its time with great balance overall, and that's something I'll always be proud of as a mapmaker. Sorry to the folks if you wanted to keep the map, but nothing lasts forever
Love the big variations of these maps al together. Really like that they try some maps without xel naga towers, although I think it favors protoss a bit
I love the map pool, my only complaint is they really messed up with Korhal City its a 2v2 map.... Also has anyone been playing against more p and T lately. I feel like I don't see any zerg anymore haha.
I just got back into 1v1 laddering and I was wondering what people look at when it's time to veto a map? Is it the tileset/look of the map or more on a gameplay basis? I play random and haven't veto'd anything yet but I'm curious as to what reasoning goes behind it.

Pretty sure most people veto the maps their race is bad on.

Thirds are hard to hold for protoss I agree, but it's still a great map. I really like the lack of watch towers, it actually requires some map awareness instead of just putting a single unit to the watch tower over and over again.

Yeah it is pretty sad it is still in the map pool. On the previous page I said I unvetoed it to veto Whirlwind, but that statement has been rescinded. After about 5 matches it went back to being vetoed. It just is not fun to play on anymore. It was great when it first was added but now it is so old and boring.
