MOBA game is so popular that only a little fans still care about RTS. Poor Chinese progamers forget to add: good translations How big is WC3 still inside China? Chinese WC3 scene is just like SC2, only minority of fans care much about it, while WC3 scene is more spiritless than SC2 scene because there is no tournament outside China. But many Chinese fans who have not play or watch WC3 for years still care much about WCG, care about those famous players(SKY,FLY100%,Infi,TH000,etc). Even Chinese SC2&MOBA fans will watch WCG WC3 games for the memory of those golden ages. Since my English is not good, you may get more confused through reading my post, sorry. wc3 is alot bigger than sc2 in china. a lot bigger. wc3 is free in china (pirate and whatever business aside) and sc2 is not as far as i know. for games to be big in china they have to be able to lan/pirated. i am chinese fyi. I agree with you that f2p is really important in China. But Chinese WC3 scene WAS big. Today, WC3 players who play on clients is not bigger than SC2 players on CN server(only count solo and team games, DOTA is still popular you know). WC3 scene is even spiritless than SC:BW scene: number of players is not big, and they cant hold a new amatuer tournament like COSL(a BW amatuer tournament which get much concern). Majority only care about WC3 in WCG by habit. The golden time passed, you cant say WC3 is still big in China imo. I haven't been following the scene as closely in the past few months but G-League, HNC, AWL, IEF, HAD, AWC, DPK, and HWD (and potentially more) were held pretty recently. And of course, there is WCG, and I think at least 3-4 more tourneys going on right at this moment (EDIT: just checked, Replays lists WCG, HFWL, AWL, and G-League playing for the next three weeks). Not sure if all those are Chinese events (some are actually Korean) and I believe many are online and have relatively small prizes, but they're all populated by the strongest players right now. Amateurs do try to compete when there is an "open bracket" so to speak, but to put it simply, they get unanimously slaughtered by the veterans; not much you can do when you are matched up against Kenshin or even some of the semi-pros. Also the 2v2 scene is pretty alive and kicking atm, esp. with teams like Yumiko/TH000, Fly/TeD, and Lucifer/Nicker playing 2's.
I cannot speak about the Chinese BW scene, but I truly doubt they hold more tourneys than War3. Maybe you can enlighten us about this.
I don't think it's "big" anymore, but you're definitely underestimating the number of tournaments. There are a ton, however small. You just go to Yumiko's channel and he always has new games uploaded and casted for people to watch either every day or every other day (literally).

Great interview, best of luck to these two and Chinese Starcraft in general. Would be awesome to see some more exposure into american/european/korean leagues

In China it's piracy or nothing. What you gonna do about it? Cant blame Blizzard on this. It's not like Chinese players are any remotely spectacular at this game either.

Really nice interviews. Rather than feeling simply depressed - I recognize and feel in touch with those hardships, but also the positivity and forward hopes, their struggle, and what makes it worth it. I want to do more for the Chinese scene, and I am on the lookout for opportunities. I think I'll get my girlfriend to translate a few encouraging messages to both of these guys, and also one to toodming (xigua and toodming are some of my favorite players period, even with how few games we get to see of them) to tell him that I miss getting to see him too! But I really would like to stream and cast games from their scene. That's what I'm going to look into in the near future.

Very much LoL and Dota2. They love MOBAs and similar (which is why WC3 was big too for a long time, I imagine).

But I thought China has many WoW players too, and that game is like anything but free haha.
I guess the overall trend nowadays is just more towards free games, not just in China, but from what I heard about Korea too.

It's a shame SC2 never took off in China. When SC2 came out I expected them to be the #2 country like they were in BW. With DotA level backing they might have even challenged Korean supremacy.

There are so many ARTS games in China that it's not even funny. RTS game is simply dead there. Oh wait who wanna make RTS game these day anyway?

Something big about Chinese Starcraft will pop up on TL soon.

just one point, don't understand why it's always about national pride to them (not just BWC...i know it's on homeground).
it's one thing for koreans to have pride when playing sc2, because hey, korea = starcraft, rightly or wrongly, and it's one competitive game they're famous for being really, really good at. if korea loses at swimming or tennis they wouldnt be up in arms about it.
but chinese sc2 has never been strong in the first place, yet they are giving themselves so much pressure to bring "glory" for their country...
as australian of course I feel proud when moonglade does well and i love to support me mates, but not to such a serious extent, i dont see other players go OMG ive let everyone down, our scene is bad, we can't even beat so-and-so country

korea, japan, and china have 'special relationships' to each other.
