my thoughts exactly... I didnt go because I didnt get a pass... Despite having the funds to go. if they didnt sell out the full 256 ill be pissed tbh... As I had my flight and hotel entirely planned out, and all my friends and I got denied....
It's too bad they limited the open bracket so much compared to past MLGs but I don't really care because Soulkey will be there and they have a LoL tournament.
I think, the logic behind 144 players: 128 in the bracket from WR1, from seed 17 to N/A top 16 OB seeds seeded into the WB Ro16 like Columbus, making it essentially a second WB Ro32 (I think that would be WR4 in this case, was WR5 last time with a 256 bracket). There are less players total I believe due to WCS, which will take part of the time + manpower + computers away from the main event.
I'd be pretty surprised if anything I said was incorrect.
The MLG Twitch channel is lacking a thread, so I wanted to post it here that they are doing a great job at E3, even though their location is crappy (just a little corridor somewhere I feel like) with no audience. But good showmatches with pro's casting (Nony casting is great) and having Jim Raynor in person (more or less) attending is nice.

kind of ridic that they didnt put a point/league requirement to compete, lots of sub high master players got in cause they were an MLG gold member while a high master who lives 20 minutes away (me) doesnt get to compete because the tickets sold out in 2 minutes.. sigh

You gotta remember at IPL4 they also had 2 full Korean teams there for GSTL...
Very true, although I seem to remember some bigger names at Winter champs. Might just be going crazy.
Pools are also 13 Korean players and 3 foreigners so that adds a lot to there. I keep forgetting the MLG pools are not 90% foreigners with a few seeded Koreans anymore.

SaSe you handsome nerd! Best of luck to the rest of the foreigners. These open brackets continue to grow increasingly difficult. Though the foreign talent keeps on rising.
I'm seeing forward to this! Love the MLG events. A little bit sad that there are just a few Europeans. Especially no Germans. But will be a great event, I am sure!

Yes it is all MLG's fault. Why are they so stupid to not look at Hero's schedule? OMG!! (maybe Hero should change his schedule, it isnt MLGs fault that he cant attend)

MLG's mantra is letting anybody play. Not their fault you took the risk of not getting gold. MLG will never have a point/league requirment.

As a friend of Xeno's, I'm not entirely sure he'll be playing as Savior at the event. In fact, I'm pretty sure he won't be. He'll probably be playing under the SCS clan tag, though.
wait so theres actually pros that wanted to get into the open bracket but it filled up and they even had the money and were planning to go but had to cancel?
damn the open bracket should be like 500 people or somehow find a way to give pros the option to call MLG and request a exception pass and they can be let in

The open bracket can't be any larger. Normally its 256 and thats been fine size wise. any larger and the event would need to start a day earlier. MLG hosting the USA WCS means smaller open bracket this time around, which caused some problems.

I decided to focus on Blizzard's tournament due to lack of practice leading up to the event (May and early June have been filled spending time with family, attending graduations, moving and E3).

The "seeded into OWR5" players are in that list, too. However, it appears that only 9/16(?) will attend. The 160-player bracket size was confirmed by Adam, so the only players "missing" from the list (of those who will be playing) are those seeded into Pool Play.
edit: MMA, MoOk, Tefel, Seiplo, GoOdy, Bly, Rain, and LosirA are those who had OWR5 seeds but do not appear on the open bracket player list. (Virgil just confirmed that MoOk is going into military service.)
Excited to see a lot of the NA players perform, the skill level of the player appears to have risen or caught up to Koreans more so than any other time I can remember for SC2.
Open bracket does seem smaller than before, was it not like 256 players in the past? - Looked through the thread, Pokebunny confirmed this. Maybe they had to tighten up the schedule with all the other Starcraft Events going on at the same time. Should be pretty good, looking forward to it.
Not a lot of Korean in the Open bracket this time. Big names are FXO Lucky SlayerS_Clide Fnatic Oz JYP Puma Choya MVP TAILS MVP Monster Zenio.
Well, that's still quite a lot I guess. Less than before since pool play is full of the others. Not sure a foreigner will make it out. Will depend on the bracket I guess.

Might want to take a look at the pool play. Its pretty much the GSL. Nothing against Dreamhacks and IEMs, but they have never had the depth of top players that MLG has.

Well European Football Championship events usually have even worse players then your average euro online sc2 tourney.

Well, there is a rumor TLO may have received a Code A seed (unconfirmed so far obviously). So like HerO and TaeJa he may be focusing on GSL instead and thus stayed in Korea.
On June 06 2012 15:52 jtp118 wrote: wow, GSL is really trying to screw MLG over with their scheduling ... so few koreans
GSL moved around the order of their Code S Ro32 groups in order to accomodate players wanting to go to MLG or Dreamhack, just like they did last season for those attending the the MLG Winter Championship in Columbus.
The Koreans in the open bracket are similar to those in Columbus...mostly those from foreign teams. Despite the smaller open bracket, the number of players coming from Korean teams that are actually spending money to send them is up from Columbus (Anaheim will have five from three teams, Columbus had three from one team). It's likely that the issue is not the GSL schedule, but rather the teams choosing to not spend money on sending players with an uncertain return on investment (Losira, for example, is going to forfeit out of an OWR5 seed again despite not having impending Code S group like some players.)
Wish there was at least one Startale player at MLG. I guess I'll have to pick someone else to cheer for. Maybe Jinro or Clide. If Clide were to win MLG from the Open Bracket I think I would have to change my religion to Clide.
On June 07 2012 02:45 sorrowptoss wrote: No Boxer? No MMA? No Nestea? No Losira? Sad.
Like I said, it says something for the costs of flying guys out to the US (and the budgets of the teams vs. the payout structure of the tournament) when Losira doesn't get sent to the Championships for the second time in a row, even with a seed to OWR5. I would have thought that things would have changed with the LG sponsorship.
It seems that for some of the players/teams, the Arenas are all-or-nothing in terms of attending the Championship (either get into Pool Play with expenses paid, or skip the tournament).
I would really like bling or demuslim do well, failing that, if possible not a korean since the pro bracket is stacked with koreans. Would be sexual to see a UK player make it out of the open bracket and go on to win. Though maybe it is unlikely
Am I right in saying players like LZ-Gamer and Incontrol will be competing in the WCS at the same time as MLG? Because if that's true I feel like they stand such a low chance of winning either. These tournaments exhaust players very quickly indeed.

That's why I like the Nony approach of just doing the WCS. Open bracket is an uphill battle for many foreigners. So perhaps defeat in it won't take long.

Pretty retarded of a league built around gaming to not let you change clan/team tags.
Chill out man. MLG is a great organization. They put on awesome events. Chill.
He didn't say they weren't. He said it's dumb that they don't have the option for players to change their names. If anybody needs to relax it's you. You're taking minor criticisms and assuming they're attacks on the whole organization.
So, either I am blind or this time I don't see any from ROOT in Open Bracket. No Catz or Destiny? Slush? interesting. I understand if Drewbie wasn't there, since his pool play has been rough.

Everyone makes out of groups on MLG, it's at least a seed for the Championship Bracket Round 2.

I doubt those are Seedings
Putting IdrA ahead of Oz, aLive and PuMa wouldnt make much sense now, would it?
More likely the order of entrys that signed up there
Of course they're seedings. The seedings are based on MLG points, which is determined in part by how often they turn up to events.
Before points, seeding is based on performance in the Spring MLG season, the first criterion being Arena 2 standing (the bottom finishers from Arena get placed in OWR4, so MLG gave them the highest seeds, too). aLive and PuMa both narrowly failed to qualify for Arena 2, losing consolation matches in the Invite-Only Online Qualifiers.
Oz and IdrA both fell out of Arena 2 in the first round, so I guess they ignored their performance in the IOOQ (either because were in different regions, or they treated all "qualified for Arena 2" players the same -- too bad for Oz, who won the KR regional), and they went to Points. I can't find an updated 2011/2012 point list, but IdrA was rank 3 in 2011, and Oz was #71.

Yea MMA and LosirA arent even in this list, dunno how they made it to the Power Rank though, they wont be in Anaheim.
They are seeded on Open Winners Bracket Round 5.
The assumption was that they'd attend the tournament and make use of those seeds, but it appears that like six of the 16 OWR5 seeds in Columbus (incuding LosirA himself then), they're not going to show up. They are among seven players seeded for OWR4 who do not appear on the Open Bracket player list. (It's Round 4 this time due to the tournament having one round less.)
Does anyone know if the seed order means anything? Or how it was determined? Maybe I'm not as familiar with the players but I'm surprised to see certain players ahead of others.
Does anyone know the % of Terrans that made it out of the Open bracket, even passed the first round? I looked at the players and seemed to find only a few Terrans, including Trimaster.
