Pregame Interviews - What do we want to hear?

As I was listening to the new episode of JPs Real Talk I was thinking: It's great that we have such awesome coverage around our favorite game, but then I came to think of the one thing that could use serious improvement: the pregame interviews.

Don't get me wrong, the last thing I want to do here is to bash casters, but we probably all witnessed a situation where a caster tried to think of something non-generic on the spot and a pretty awkward situation ensued - especially if the player is a Korean and his answer has nothing to do with the question because of the language barrier.^^
Some are better than others at it (not gonna call names here), but it sometimes goes like this: I'm super pumped for a match between two great players and can't wait for it to begin, and the pregame interview is there to get me even more hyped. But then the caster asks something along the line of "You played player x two weeks ago and he did strategy y against you. What were you thinking when unit z entered your base at minute 24:17?" and after the longest 30 seconds of translating in my life I get to hear "I practice hard to show my fans the best games possible." Errrrm yeah, get in the booth and play, would you please?^^

Jesting aside, let's try to make this positive and come up with some possible questions casters could use as corner points for future interviews. But you don't need to get that specific, just talk about what you would like to hear in general. Do you think strategy focused questions have a place at all in that situation (for example depending on the opponent "He is a strong macro player, do you think you will be able to stand against that? (how?)") or would you rather hear hype-inducing stuff, possibly even trash talk?

I feel that pregame interviews should only be done if necessary, most interviews are just some useless thing rather than actually having an intended question

After redbull I tried to think of several questions one could ask, I couldn't think of a good bunch so unless someone has some good suggestions to convince me otherwise I think pregame interviews shouldn't be done at all.
I promise I'll behave.

Unless a pro player really wants to play mindgames, there's not a lot to say pre-game. I would love it if someone said "yeah I'm just going to 4 gate every game," then they actually go and do that and win. That's just not going to happen though.

Pre-game interviews as we know them, should not exist. For instance, the recent Red Bull Battlegrounds tournament (fantastic tournament, great production value) - no reason for those pre-game interviews however.

These questions have little place and are usually just a lead up to build excitement for the fans for that specific match.

This could be done better by doing the following:

1. Create actual interviews in advance that can be shown on the stream/screen with the major stars of the event in order to fill time.

2. Create a 15 second intro for each player. The introductions could be either A) a small gameplay highlight, or B) Get the players to do a 15 second bit about themselves, and their comments going into the tournament.
(obviously this is tournament specific, as tournaments with large open brackets would be hard pressed to do this effectively) - also this would be better if accompanied by point 3 in later stages of the event, so the videos aren't repeated over and over and over.

3. Announce the players and make it more of a showing by having them come on stage with a little bit of an intro (by intro I mean a few words from the announcer) for each player and have the announcer facilitate a hand shake and send them to their booths.

4. NASL Season 2 Grand Finals style with a red-carpet walk. Music, lights, fan interaction - the whole nine yards.

Also - I find there should be better analysis by the commentators at times when introducing the players. Personally I feel as though it is the commentators job to help build the excitement around the players going on stage to perform. When the commentators can inform me more about each player, and help draw some sort of personal connection and insight into what I am about to watch, then that makes it much more appealing.

I think asking a player about what strategy they are going to use before a match is absolutely the worst thing you can ask a player.

How come the player, strategy and unit are variables but the time isn't? T_T

Well, MC said he would 2- or 3-base all-in every game vs Stephano. He proceeded to win the series through 2- and 3-base all-ins (though it certainly wasn't every game).

I think there are way too many interviews these days. We don't need an interview from every player before each of their matches. It starts to feel like a really unnecessary delay when we get to the quarter finals and we hear the same hand full of players get asked if they are ready for their opponent (always yes), if they have anything special planned (always yes, but I'm not going to say), and if they have a prediction for the match (always something like "I don't predict games, I play them") over and over again. Just get to the games.

Like most of the other posters, I think that there's too many interviews before the games these days. Pre-game interviews are meant to create hype. Have a pre-game interview before every single game and we'll have a bland build up with none of the games getting the hype we want from it. The focus shouldn't really be on the questions, but on when to actually put in a pre-game interview. Hit the sweet timing and any question will still mean something.
