For a long time now there have been threads floating around about people experiencing difficulty playing ladder. It's too easy to just hop on TeamLiquid, throw on a stream, and live vicariously through your favorite players. There have been attempts made to change the experience with marathons, workout routines, drinking games, and in Nony's case an exciting mix! But none of those have peaked my interest, as they seem to fizzle out quickly.
With that being said, I present to you a new idea to help encourage setting goals and laddering more often through money. It's quick, it's easy, and just requires a lot of quarters!
I present the More GG More Skill Piggy Bank!
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/Fc7e9l.jpg)
I'm currently a Silver League player on the long road to Masters, and the motivation I will be using will be governed by my losses and promotions.
Loss Parameters (Deposit into GG Bank): Cheese: $0.50 30+ Min Game: $1 Other: $0.25
Promotion Parameters (Withdraw from Skill Bank): Gold: $10 Platinum: $20 Diamond: Treat myself to a nice dinner. Masters: New Graphics Card! (I anticipate this taking a lot of time and saved money :3)
For those of you that have trouble sticking to your guns, just spend five minutes staring at your GG Bank and think of how much happier you would be when you finally get to dump out your winnings, and appreciate the Blue Star that is elusive to so many of us.
The purpose of this thread is to encourage others to either join me in this test of financial fortitude and star strength, or share an additional way to encourage yourself and others to take up arms in the ladder ranks.
For now it's time for me to empty my pockets.
Best of luck to everyone!
Edit: I've played about 20 games since the post, and with the new season I've made it into Gold! Unfortunately there was only a couple of dollars in the piggy bank so I'll delay my reward until Platinum.

making goals for urself is a great idea.

Why different amount? a loose is a loose, a win is a win....

Just to spice things up really.

Hmmm, maybe I should do this. I'm a silver player trying to get to masters as well.
|
I really like this idea! You are one smart cookie!
|
if you want to motivate yourself, give the money to someone else. not to yourself.
|
This is a great idea, I'm going to do this .
|
ahahaha this idea is so cute. If you actually do this, keep us posted!

Will do, I'm starting tonight, playing a few games before bed, good thing there's a new season soon!
|
I really like this idea, and it really works if youre comfy with your money (and have change sitting around to do lots o deposits).
I know that for me to get from Plat-masters I'd be banking a couple hundred with my style. Lots of greedy play vieing for a strong lategame.
|
Ha ha this is cute. Good luck buddy!
|
|
Another way to do it if you don't have as tangible of goals (like if you are already masters) would be to give a friend $100 and have them pay you $1 for every game you win or something like that.
Alternatively, you could make a contract with said friend stating you will play 15 games a day and should you not meet your goal a specified day, you have to pay the friend $100.
|
Lol this is a really nice idea... If I did that, I'd follow through for a little bit, but I wouldn't be able to control myself and I'd just rip open my bank and take my money back :D.
^ Pretty harsh alternative lol, I'd lose my $100 in a day.
And I'm pretty sure this should be in blogs.

never let strangers know where you keep your money

You make me sad. Its like saying that us lower leaguers will never reach masters and we should just uninstall now

well, im just saying.... how would you feel if some troll came and robbed your skill bank... you'd definitely have to call "GG"
kay fine, i think its a decent idea.. i personally should put a quarter in a bank everytime i lost, not to hopefully get it back someday, but to just save some god damn money for once....and i play a lot of sc2
|
I would have to get a second job just to pay for my losses. I like to blame my losses on me being old and curse the 12 year old looking koreans for winning soo much but ya a second job would be in order even at a nickel a lose for as much as I still play.
|
This is a really cool idea i've never thought of, saving this thread
edit: just random thing, my friends (of different league levels) motivate each other by things like, whoever can get the most wins in a season, the other have to buy the one person chipotle. Fun way to compete among yourselves. It's really easy to keep track if you create your own sc2ranks division.
|
Heh, I thought this was going to be some kind of swear-jar thing. No GG = money in the jar!
|
I'd be throwing .50c into that can literally 10 minutes
|
I would consider doing this if loose change wasn't the bane of my existence. I cannot stand having any coins in my possession!!! ^_^
That's a cool way to motivate yourself! GLGLGLGLGL!
|
This is a good token system, but I feel ultimately that the wins and losses should be just accepted as sentimental solo rewards.
|
ahaha, i was totally expecting some advertisement marketing a new WhiteRa-inspired product similar to the "GG" button. Maybe when you drop money in it plays back a recording of WhiteRa saying "More GG, More Skill?"
until next time...
|
If i did this not only would I still be bad at starcraft but i'd also be broke too.
|
I really love this idea. Although I do think you should decrease the increments. a 30 game ladder day could be a lot of money.

There should be a punishment for each free day (obviously if you are too busy to ladder you shouldn't be punished) not spent laddering to also dissuade laziness / ladder anxiety. For example, a fine of $5 if I don't ladder because of ladder fear.
This is sort of a good idea, I just might try it myself.

Haha yeah, having someone else manage the money is better especially sicne it will ensure you don't break your own rules.
|
i like the idea.. ^_^ but sucks when you are poor haha =p if i had a job i would do this
|
Great idea =) I don't like the different amount by losses though. You should make it the same amount in my opinion.
|
|
I guess it would defintately help me to stop playing when on tilt. Losing too much money y0!
Although something about the concept doesn't seem right, the more games you lose the more money you lose. But you aren't losing the money as you are getting it back eventually or it is being saved. So therefore more games lost = more money earnt? Maybe i am thinking about it the wrong way. Pretty cool idea though
|
haha cute idea!
Though aren't you withdrawing much less than you deposit? Or is the idea that you only use the stuff that's in the bank. (It takes about 20 games, 10 wins to make $10 worth it for promoting to gold, it can take much longer than that to promote)
|
That's not a Piggy. U trolled me!
|
a pretty funny AND useful idea
|
The only problem with this is that it might become a limiting factor to play. Not having the cash on hand

Not having money never stopped countries from writing IOUs :p

hi. i want to say that it's a great idea OP :-)
i have done something similar in the past when i played 1s where i stash $1 for every loses in silver/gold but i didnt do anything when i won lol.
|
You should also give yourself a penalty for league demotions.
Also, each loss--> 20 push-ups. Put in some health awareness there!
Either you become a masters player, or, a rich healthy dude!

I thought the same as this. You should add in that parameter, if you BM it's $5, if you no GG ragequit it's $2, or something.
|
Great idea.. but if you are silver league at this point I would make Diamond your goal. Masters is probably out of the question.

Depends really, practice the right way, you'll probably get it.
|
This is a really cool idea! GL on your way to the higher leagues!
|
Why do you need to motivate yourself to play? Starcraft isn't self betterment like a diet or quitting smoking.
If it's not fun don't play it.
|
Nice idea, good luck with it
|
You might wanna change 30min+ game to 10 min+. 30 min+ games are pretty rare.
|
Haha this is awesome, but I am way way WAY to poor for this.

In a tournament maybe. In training how you lose is of utmost importance if you want to improve. If you're a player whose strenght is the late game and you lose after 20 minutes then that will be a worse loss then if you lost to cheese. Also if you're a cheese based player and lose with a failed all in (something you mess up) then that's obviously worse than losing in a straight up game because that is what you're supposed to be best at.
Also one might want to control how one plays the game by these rules. If you feel like you are bad at lasting more than 15 minutes against a terran you might want to have a lower price for when you lost after 15 minutes, since you did in fact improve one aspect of your game even if you lost.
For the OP though. Pretty funny idea. Really creative. I personally don't have the dicipline to stick to something like this. But it would be fun seeing someone elses progress. Keep posting how you're doing dude.

That's the point. Would you rather play 15 games or lose $100?

QQ I just don't get it why have to pay more for these 30min+ macro games ? IMO more macro games, more improvement in skill.
Anyway cool idea XD gonna make one
