I mean, I see why it might be too late for his baggage, just throw it into the next plane, but why not let him on board? (I was in a similar situation once and the employees at the airport were more merciful). That's what I thought, damn a couple minutes late and they really turned him down? That's happened to me too, I was only a few minutes late one time and it didn't seem like it was even that big of a problem to let me on (RDU). Obviously that only makes two of us that have had this experience and it's perfectly reasonable to think that we just got lucky. The thing is though, I read before that American airports screen, or have in the past, for minority groups to target for extra security measures. I hope that the reason Select couldn't get on the plane wasn't because he's a minority in the U.S, or has a strong accent (just guessing from the OP that he isn't quite 'fluent,' no offense), etc. Knowing that airports do that same kind of thing in other contexts makes me suspicious, especially when I think about how I was treated when this happened to me. That would really piss me off, but we'll never know.

Lined up 40 mins before check in in the queue then 5 mins late to the service desk and told I can't board even though there are seats available. There were at least 40 people in the queue and only 2 service clerk. This was just a domestic flight... I've lodged a complaint through fair trading as I'm out of pocket $400 due to their scam.

1. Check in Online. Absolutely no reason not to. All major airlines support it. You get to skip so many lines and just wait in security. 2. No Checked Bags. You really can fit a lot into your two carryons. A mid-sized backpack + a 14x9x22 roller bag can fit me... my laptop, DSLR camera, ~10-14 sets of clothes (no joke), and whatever else i need.. Those would be the "big ticket" items. 3. Typical is arrive 1 hour prior to domestic flights, 2 hours prior to international flights. Varies by airport & time left. That is arrive at the airport.. departing from your location depends on numerous factors, of course.. and you should plan accordingly. Though, I'll admit, I am pretty airport spoiled because my primary departing hub is Denver.

Bring a book, or have your laptop with you, it is a very minor inconvenience compared to missing the flight. Though yes, it is better to end up waiting in the airport than missing your flight; however, I am under the impression pro-gramers fly often enough to have a good idea on how much time they would need to get to the airport and check-in. If I was a pro-gamer there is no way I would want to be waiting in the airport for two hours every time I planned on flying out to a competition, so I really do not think SeleCT is completely at fault here. He appropriated the amount of time he figured he needed not accounting for any accidents to happen during his drive to the airport. As it is not always feasible to be able to account for all the "what-ifs" in life. I really think that this is just SeleCT having some more bad luck. Has he ever missed any other competitions because he missed his flight? I can not recall reading about this happening to him before, so because this is not a chronic occurrence I am inclined to sympathize with him rather than tell him, "well, you should have left earlier, duh!" It is always easier to look at things and say what should have been done, in retrospect. EDIT: Good Luck Tomorrow SeleCT!!!

I've been stuck in 2 hour traffic jams multiple times Ok, but the point is if you leave early enough so that even a 2 hour delay will not make you miss your flight then you will be fine. Most likely I have take more flights than select due to the nature of my job, and I have never missed a single one. I just do not have much sympathy for someone who would rather save time by waiting to leave than waiting at the airport. Airports have wi-fi, restaurants, bars, and book shops. Being at an airport several hours early is by no means torture. Leaving your residence two hours before your flight is set to take off is stupid in my opinion.
