I don't have faith that the option to change the chat window size will have any effect on the 'alone' feeling of bnet, unless the options include a rework of the entire interface to make chat more of a main function. And also, not sure why people are playing up this IP thing to be LAN, I would be enormously surprised if it was anything close to LAN.

We’re also working on a feature that will help players connect with other players and games that are near their location (connecting through the same IP). We believe this will primarily be used by people in internet gaming rooms, offices, dorm rooms, and local tournaments where you just want to find the guy sitting in the desk next to you. Although this may not be ready in time for the release of patch 1.5, we do intend to have this available by the time Heart of the Swarm ships. Why are people assuming this means "LAN with internet required"? It sounds more like I can get ten people in a dorm room and it'll be easy for us to find each other on bnet. It's nice, sure, and makes tournaments a little bit easier, but I don't see what it has to do with LAN, exactly.

All I see is some crap about connecting to people on the same ip address as you is now going to be easier. This is not lan mode. Kudos Blizzard on starting to fix your broken custom map system and letting me resize chat channels... I will be more impressed when you let me watch replays with friends, and implement an actual lan mode, even if its only for tournaments.

Finally, I don't have to yell to my friend across the room for his bnet id and character code that I already have. I maybe it sort of will help with discovering people play around you. Like if you're in a dorm and it tells you that there are like 4 other people on in there and none of you knew about eachother. I guess it would be kind of cool in that situation, but it isn't LAN...

As long as games expose details of different anti-aliasing algorithms, there'll be a use for people knowing the difference between them. If ever there wind up being best-practices that let game developers just provide an on/off switch, maybe it won't be necessary to go into depth about it. Hoping for the future!

It's a compromise they make to prevent piracy and other Sc2 multiplayer platforms which would of course also take away from their capabilities of controlling tournaments, especially in Korea, China etc. where they'd have a hard time with their IP law rights. Maybe. I feel like Blizzard didn't think much of competitive play for a long time, and were just giving lip service to it because of the legacy of BW, and that they recently changed their minds after huge crowds starting appearing. WoW isn't going to be around forever, and SC2 is showing potential as a long-term revenue stream. We'll see, though.

Despite all of this, it is great to see anti-aliasing being brought into StarCraft 2. ![]()
