Alex is verbose, and you owe it to yourself (and the rest of us) to read the statement in its entirety. Remember, when making comments/claims to provide proper evidence, facts etc. Arguments based on incorrect assumptions, facts and straw men, will be dealt with swiftly. If in doubt, PM a mod or ask IRC. Do NOT spread misinformation, when in doubt, check your sources.

In short, be smart.

Alex comments on Idra:

WOW... just lost a ton of respect for this guy. Perhaps Orb deserves to be punished, but certainly not dismissed. He's certainly the best analytical commentator next to Artosis and Day9 and EG is making a huge mistake.

Seriously there has been so much drama recently and this is almost completely due to the fact that r/starcraft has been strring shit up. This lesso relates to the orb situation because he fully deserves the negative attention for being such an idiot, but I just hope this doesn't lead to others getting in trouble for a small mistake or something far in the past.

So this what I saw breaking this post into three sections
1.
blah blah blah talking myself up so I look good blah blah blah

2.
Ok, what we have been waiting to see. Well said and I like the fact you took time to insure it was a legit thing that happened. It does suck seeing a pro get kicked off a top level team but I don't feel sorry for him.

3.
Didn't want to read more blah. Just skipped it.

Did we seriously just lose one of the nicest personalities in the scene because you idiots couldn't stop crying? I'm all for action when the time is right like against clearly hateful comments, Limbaugh, but when someone is just obviously cursing someone out it has nothing to do with race.

teamliquid.net took the Orb replay, and looked at it carefully. `That seems to be done right -- ' he began.

`You're holding it upside down!' Alex Garfield interrupted.

`To be sure I was!' teamliquid.net said gaily, as he turned it round for him. `I thought it looked a little queer. As I was saying, that seems to be done right -- though I haven't time to look it over thoroughly just now -- and that shows that there are three hundred and sixty-four days when you might cast Starcraft 2 -- '

`Certainly,' said Alex Garfield.

`And only one for nerd rage, you know. There's nigger for you!'

`I don't know what you mean by "nigger,"' Alex Garfield said.

teamliquid.net smiled contemptuously. `Of course you don't -- till I tell you. I meant "gg wp"'

`But "nigger" doesn't mean "gg wp,"' Alex Garfield objected.

`When I use a word,' teamliquid.net said in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'

`The question is,' said Alex Garfield, `whether you can make words mean so many different things.'

`The question is,' said teamliquid.net, `which is to be master - - that's all.'

Alex Garfield was too much puzzled to say anything, so after a minute teamliquid.net began again. `They've a temper, some of them -- particularly verbs, they're the proudest -- adjectives you can do anything with, but not verbs -- however, I can manage the whole of them! Impenetrability! That's what I say!'

`Would you tell me, please,' said Alex Garfield `what that means?`

`Now you talk like a reasonable child,' said teamliquid.net, looking very much pleased. `I meant by "impenetrability" that we've had enough of that subject, and it would be just as well if you'd mention what you mean to do about Idra, as I suppose you don't mean to stop here all the rest of your life.'

`That's a great deal to make one word mean,' Alex Garfield said in a thoughtful tone.

`When I make a word do a lot of work like that,' said teamliquid.net, `I always contact its sponsors.'

`Oh!' said Alex Garfield. He was too much puzzled to make any other remark.

Think before posting. He managed to ruin it himself.

Your statement is like saying "the Jews ruined their lives for living in Germany 1930-1945"

Jeez, take your own advice. Wtf kind of example is that?

I'm sorry but that is complete shit, for example...if you are having a chat with your boss and you work in an office...say something like ''oh yeah he was acting like a complete faggot/nigger''...he will take it as it is, he will either not mention it all OR
he will say something along the lines of oh i dont appreciate you using that language around me. Example 2 which is closer to what a caster is, Basketball (first sport that came to my head) if the commentators say oh wow kobe's acting like a real nigger/faggot you really think he would be fine with faggot but not nigger? Get your head out EG's ass.

Let me use a counter- counter-example, a real world example. Way back in beta, Orb was defeatured for saying the word "nigger" while streaming, if I recall correctly. Yet that has never happened for people who've used the word "faggot" to my knowledge, nor do I recall that option ever being discussed. There is a double-standard there. The two words are not equivalent in the public eye.

In addition, Orb and Idra are at different levels of being a "public figure." You used the example of a sports broadcaster. Obviously if a sports commentator used either the n-word or f-word, they would be fired immediately. If an NFL player used the word "faggot," what would happen to him? Would he be fired?

wait, wait, so you've got a ban hammer, your saying that TL believes the use of and calling people "faggot" is acceptable?

Please explain how you came to that conclusion from my post.

What about Destiny saying "nigger" and not being de-featured?

Not relevant to my argument. I was not trying to make any statements on TL policy. I was only stating that TL has defeatured streamers for one word and has neglected to do so for other words, and that practice reflects the way that the two words are treated in society.

Aren't you an admin on TL? What you post does represent policy, just like what Orb said represents EG.

Even if I were an admin, and I am not, you still need to explain how my post implies that TL condones the word "faggot."

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=319018&currentpage=35#700

Anyway, hopefully both words will be used less now by everyone. I also hope that Orb bounces back, we've all made our share of mistakes - not quite like this one but.... =)

I use it all the time, in a friendly way, whatever being the skin color of my relative.

"You can get punched in the teeth" Is a terrible argument, you can also get hit in the teeth if people dont like your face, your skin color, or if you dont want to share your cigarettes. Like you just said "Get a clue".

I would argue that TL should put their featured streamers to a higher standard as well, and apply the rules consistently. Maybe this is just the catalyst necessary to do this?

Couldn't agree more. Let's stamp this shit out of gaming for good.

I came from the counter-strike community as well; that community was really immature and I was surprised at the maturity of the starcraft community. I think the reason for that is because TL is a great site that moderates closely, shunning immature people from posting or filtering them out of the community. Also, the reddit community is community moderated where they can downvote comments. I think it's good that TL, EG, etc are shaping the community with their values and influence.

If EG feels that they have core values then they should also look into sportsmanship as one of their values. I wonder what Alex feels of IdrA's behavior where it seems like his behavior is encouraged by some of the community when I feel like it shouldn't be. IdrA also does it during largely spectated matches, not only during his ladder games (although, his stream gets a big audience as well). IdrA has used inappropriate languages before in chat and commonly not "gg" which symbolizes sportsmanship gesture.

Well written post and I agree with the whole thing.

People saying it's an overreaction are ridiculous. If you want this industry taken seriously than you have to hold it to similarly serious standards. If an ESPN broadcaster was found to have PUBLICLY ranted using racial slurs would they still be in the job? Nope, the guy who wrote the Chink in the Armor headline about Jeremy Lin lost his job, and now so did Orb. Fair is fair.

These are the standards in the real world, when you are a paid representative of a company and sponsors who have an image to protect.

This is the perfect example. To all the teens getting up in arms about adults cracking down on cursing, look at what happens outside of your little gaming world...

You honestly don't see how your post at least sort of gives off that impression? You say no one has even discussed defeaturing someone for saying "faggot" on their streams. So it would be fair to say that TeamLiquid at least doesn't find "faggot" unacceptable, right? If it were unacceptable, certainly TeamLiquid wouldn't highlight people saying it on their front page.

I am so glad we are not at their level.

Just a note. I don't condone said language, but I also agree with many that this is an overreaction due to sponsors being contacted. If anything Orb would have been warned and given one final chance. If anything remotely bad happens with him than he is out.

I only pointed out that there are professions where it is perfectly acceptable to say. Also that millions of people listen to the music with the words in it.

The funny thing about the word "nigger" is that it seems to offend white people more than black people. To all the people in support of Alex's view point (and to Alex himself), what are your opinions on black rappers/comedians/people using the word freely and without consequence?

Call a black guy "nigger" IRL and be prepared for an assbeating. That's all there is to say about that. They find it very offensive.

Now, blacks do call their friends "nigga" sometimes but that word is different. My black friends will say to me "what up my nigga?" and I'll say it to them if I know they're cool with it. But I wouldn't say "my nigga" to a black guy I didn't know.

Right, because there's no context there. Its really backwards that people are willing to accept the fact that words can have different meaning depending on context when the situation involves black comedians or rappers using "nigger". But when a white guy uses the word its automatically assumed racist because now we have all seem to forgotten the meaning of context.

I agree except for the part about rappers using the word "nigger." They say "nigga"

And Orb's context WAS meant to be hurtful to the person he said it to. (granted, the person probably wasn't black)

....now I feel racist for assuming blacks don't play Starcraft
