Alex is verbose, and you owe it to yourself (and the rest of us) to read the statement in its entirety. Remember, when making comments/claims to provide proper evidence, facts etc. Arguments based on incorrect assumptions, facts and straw men, will be dealt with swiftly. If in doubt, PM a mod or ask IRC. Do NOT spread misinformation, when in doubt, check your sources.

In short, be smart.

Alex comments on Idra:

Incontrol, Idra, DjWeat and many more of your collaborators have tens of posts with offensive comments in this very forum, How much digging should we do for you to release them?

Orb didn't deserve this. If he would do such a thing in your stream and under contract, fine. But the many times I saw his casts I never heard something unnapropiate. The guy is a pro caster, and you just smashed him just because your sponsors.

Backed EG into a corner with no other choice, I feel bad for orb. I want him to still get work

the r/starcraft community is terrible, its so sad how something like this happens because people have thin skin and want something to complain about

I'm not surprised at all; leave it to an entitled silver-spoon douchebag to make a business announcement into a mass of PC intellectual masturbation. Seriously, all this needed to be was a few paragraphs of "Orb did something unacceptable, so we fired him. Sorry to all and enjoy the rest of our event, P.S. please stop sending complaints to our sponsors now."

Why was he banned for this? Just curious.

I hope I catch you scrawny dorks using the N word at an event. You can get punched in the teeth and be brought back to reality. I know you don't get outside much, but get a clue.

Your argument against using an apparently racist word is that the group that would be take offense at its use couldn't possibly withhold their violence, and in the end you would end up at a dentist getting more false teeth than the guy in Oldboy? There's no logic there, it's just intimidation.

How are the people in this thread comparing Idra's profanity to Orb's? How are the two situations even remotely the same? The word "nigger" is an automatic career-ender for a public figure in almost all situations of use. The word "faggot" is not.

I don't know how people can even compare it they are just insane i use the F -word sometimes when i rage on Ladder and i usually have remorse and say sorry a minute afterwards or i just get remorse because i realise i said something dumb. But i've never used racial hatred and the N-word as a derogatory term when playing and we can't have Casters representing the community who will loosely use the N-word as a derogatory offense to another person it is deplorable. It makes the whole SC2 community look bad and will hurt E-Sports.

All you people E-mailing EG's sponsors and complaining please stop now. Orb isn't with EG anymore stop hurting the scene.

I wasn't sure if I felt Evil Geniuses was being a little too politically correct by releasing Orb. Given that it's his first week of work, I'd say he was on probation, and they certainly have a right to. After considering it, I think it helps esports as a whole that this was their response.

Video gaming as a profession and as a true passion can never be taken seriously in the mainstream if we permit language that we'd never tolerate even from close friends. When I read Mr. Garfield's post (so speedily delivered! There was even a foreword at the start of the EGMCS tonight saying hold on, a statement is coming) I was pleased he was taking the professional route about the matter. When I then saw his tweet regarding cracking down on Idra's language, I was doubly impressed. Evil Geniuses knows what direction the community should head in.

Although it's a shame Orb had to lose his job (he's better than many casters, particularly good at map analysis) there was really no other choice that could be made. There are so many race-, gender-, and sexual orientation-neutral ways to rage and he could have picked any of them.

Reddit has dirt on almost everyone. Be careful what you say and do, because not everything on the internet is anonymous.
I try to be rage-free as I game. As you can imagine, this is difficult.

maybe if the guy he played wasnt stupid and didnt attack up that ramp, no one would have their panties in a bunch over a racial slur or two. This is all that random zergs fault.

In all seriousness, why release Orb, hes the best caster outside of Tastosis....

The two words are not equivalent in the public eye.

In addition, Orb and Idra are at different levels of being a "public figure." You used the example of a sports broadcaster. Obviously if a sports commentator used either the n-word or f-word, they would be fired immediately. If an NFL player used the word "faggot," what would happen to him? Would he be fired?

Howard Cosell is a good example of what happens when a person in that type of position using a derogatory term, I believe his was monkey.

If you took an undergraduate degree in "black studies" as you put it, and you
have modern view on contemporary racism, then why do you feel "nigger" is still inherently bad?
The word only has power if you act like its the ultimate taboo, if everyone didn't care about the word
we could just assimlate into our collections of "cuss words"

Maybe in 20 years the word will not have as much power over small minds as it does now
again,,,, its just a word.... The only power it has is the power you give to it.
Be the change you want to see in the world

I don't get why people are confused about Orb getting released. Name any other player affiliated with an equally established team who has ladder raged and used racial slurs. This isn't about being overly sensative, it's about sponsors. Suppose you're sponsoring a team and you find out someone affiliated with the team has gone on rants involving the word "nigger" on MULTIPLE occasions. Would you want your product to be associated with that team?

I'm sorry but that is complete shit, for example...if you are having a chat with your boss and you work in an office...say something like ''oh yeah he was acting like a complete faggot/nigger''...he will take it as it is, he will either not mention it all OR
he will say something along the lines of oh i dont appreciate you using that language around me. Example 2 which is closer to what a caster is, Basketball (first sport that came to my head) if the commentators say oh wow kobe's acting like a real nigger/faggot you really think he would be fine with faggot but not nigger? Get your head out EG's ass.

wait, wait, so you've got a ban hammer, your saying that TL believes the use of and calling people "faggot" is acceptable?

Please explain how you came to that conclusion from my post.

What about Destiny saying "nigger" and not being de-featured?

Not relevant to my argument. I was not trying to make any statements on TL policy. I was only stating that TL has defeatured streamers for one word and has neglected to do so for other words, and that practice reflects the way that the two words are treated in society.

Aren't you an admin on TL? What you post does represent policy, just like what Orb said represents EG.

Even if I were an admin, and I am not, you still need to explain how my post implies that TL condones the word "faggot."

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=319018&currentpage=35#700

Hmm, no, there's no set policy about this sort of thing. No one sat down and said "What objectionable content should we defeature for?" As far as I know, only one person has ever been defeatured for objectionable content. Given that, no set policy was really ever needed.

Anyway, I wasn't trying to make statements about TL policy, as I've said before. If Orb made the same comments today as a featured streamer, I do not know whether he would be defeatured. The episode where he was previously defeatured was a very long time ago, back in beta.

The funny thing about the word "nigger" is that it seems to offend white people more than black people. To all the people in support of Alex's view point (and to Alex himself), what are your opinions on black rappers/comedians/people using the word freely and without consequence?

Call a black guy "nigger" IRL and be prepared for an assbeating. That's all there is to say about that. They find it very offensive.

Now, blacks do call their friends "nigga" sometimes but that word is different. My black friends will say to me "what up my nigga?" and I'll say it to them if I know they're cool with it. But I wouldn't say "my nigga" to a black guy I didn't know.

Right, because there's no context there. Its really backwards that people are willing to accept the fact that words can have different meaning depending on context when the situation involves black comedians or rappers using "nigger". But when a white guy uses the word its automatically assumed racist because now we have all seem to forgotten the meaning of context.

I agree except for the part about rappers using the word "nigger." They say "nigga"

And Orb's context WAS meant to be hurtful to the person he said it to. (granted, the person probably wasn't black)

....now I feel racist for assuming blacks don't play Starcraft

The word is regularly said as n----er in many raps. They say it for the most part to call other people the name. It is most definitely used in both ways not just n---a.
