Hello Team Liquid, its me starting another topic around my fourth i believe, but anyways this is not about me. It's about Manuel "Grubby" Schenkhuizen being the awesome innovative pro gamer that he is! And this is my contribution to him!
I am not here to brag or anything i just want to thank grubby for just being an awesome part of e-sports in general, i myself cannot speak for e-sports at all, i have never contributed or donated, showed up at a stadium for volunteer work or anything like that. But i have followed the starcraft 2 scene like a stalker for the past 13 months now! And of all the pros i really have tried to interact with or researched just for the hell of it, Grubby stuck to me the most!
I maintain a huge interest in the pro gaming centered around starcraft 2 even if i grow bored or tired from the game, i have looked up tons of builds and commentaries of game plays, but its Grubby i believe is the biggest influence on my starcraft journey of life. But don't get me wrong i have not actually known about Manuel as long as i have idra, or teamliquid players a little bit after release, the people that were HUGE with the starcraft 2 release! Grubby is just such an awesome person in general, he gives commentaries while he plays and truly shows he has a passion for what he does in life. His life is a good thing to look upon for motivation, or to see a happy successful man arise out of nowhere!
Now one cannot deny in that video he is a very happy man just based off of first impressions, which i did not have when i had seen it myself, i had already known about his prestige in warcraft 3 at the time. But what i am getting at is Grubby is not just happy himself, he brings smiles to other people, hes the person that brings a chin up in a gloomy crowd! Today Manuel made me smile, after i got off a little bit of watching CatZ stream i headed to Grubby's because i noticed he was just now featured on Team Liquid for the day.
So i started just blabbing around in his twitch tv chat probably just talking about useless bull crap and starcraft 2 strategy like i am meta game god, but i noticed everyone talking about playing mono battles with him on his stream, and i noticed it on his ad logo setting he had for streaming ( which is pretty badass ) that u could sub to him and get a little cool logo, so i went to his twitch tv page and he mentioned how he would play mono battles sometimes with subs, i was able to purchase a month subscription through my credit card, and minutes later he said mono battle time!
That's when i noticed everyone with their tags and character codes up so i put up my name too! and about how i subbed him minutes before, after he stated he had a wave of new subs and that it was nice! he saw my post about how i just subbed and he stated through his cam "thanks for subscribing flying toilet!" word for word! he made me grin right away! That was the best damn 5 bucks i have ever spent and i am very happy that it benefited my new favorite gamer, move over demuslim looks like u have been replaced with your old time warcraft 3 rival/friend! ( as far as i believe ) And thanks for reading my little cool experience about how awesome of a pro gamer Grubby is!
P.S. If you want to see the video for proof ( not bragging D: ) ill give you the second he starts the mono battles map and seen my post, it was his last video February 14th around 9:00 PM central time at 2:06:43 is right when he starts to thank me!
Grubby has been streaming like a madman of late. His stream is always highly informative, he frequently commentates on his play and even goes over replays of games occasionaly. His fan service is first class, better than anyone I've ever seen. He is very manner and always strives to get better. His PvT as of late is monstrous, you gotta see this guy play. Even if you don't play Protoss, this isn't a stream you want to miss.
I've met Grubby and hes as friendly as everyone says. Its not very often you talk to someone whos genuienly intrested in just having a nice conversation with you, no ego or anything just a really pleasent/legit guy.
OP doesnt include his twitter www.twitter.com/followgrubby or check on the right as he streams all the time ----->
Now that i subbed i plan to get on as soon as he starts streaming and i will patiently wait for him to start the fan mono battles, i don't plan on being in every game every day every time he starts a new match, but i will hang in the chat because i enjoy talking to the mods, and just watching grubby's play! cheers!
Grubby is my Chieftan . Was funny when fan asked him to make orc voice impersonations and he did them (Work Work ^^ :D) . I call this the Grubby Year, with his practice schedule, attitude and discipline im sure he will succeed
Hmm not really sure about this OP but because I love grubby as well I am going to be bias here and say that this OP is okay lol even though it should be in blogs
I did spend a lot of time writing it, re reading it and just looking for pictures, i should have at least put in general before starcraft 2 general, and i don't think i can even create a blog. hopefully the mods can move it to blogs or just general would be suitable and greatly appreciated! thanks for the constructive feedback everybody!!!
There's a few players in the scene that I have a lot of respect for because of everything they do. At the top of that tree are BoxeR, Grubby and White-Ra. They have the character, the charisma and there's just something about them that makes them so much fun. They also are all on a pretty epic journey with their careers and it's the story behind players that makes them so compelling.
It's such a pleasure to be able to watch such players because not only do they show amazing games but they're wonderful ambassadors for the esport and if/when Starcraft 2 blows up even more then it'll be thanks to people like them.
Grubby is awesome, I usually hate protoss streams never watch them but when grubby's name shows up on the side bar my mouse always seems to magically find its way over there.
Grubby Boxer and White-Ra have been the epitome of hard work recently, i don't know the comparison between grubby Boxer and White-Ra but i do know i see grubby's profiles and streaming active a lot recently, more than i can speak for Boxer or White-Ra, but i don't know the exact comparison. All i do know is these players are all devoted and strive to get better, and that's why i am appreciative of them!
I loved grubby, even in warcraft, orcs were my least favourite race but I'd still cheer for him....lol XD Unless he was vsing Moon...that's a different story =D =D Is Grubby on a team for sc2?

no, he actually isn't i heard he travels and competes off of his own funding's, and maybe a couple sponsors on the side
I can only acquiesce. I'm so glad Grubby, Axslav and ToD all switched over to SC2, and they all picked Protoss too! It makes the scene so much more entertaining for me.
hahahha, i actually watched the part of the stream when he said hello to you :D well he seems like a really nice person and i love that he commentates during his stream and is connected to his fans.

thanks it really warmed my heart when he said that too, made me wanna get better and become pro at sc2!
Grubby has earned my respect during the last few days he's been streaming. He has a lot of insight into the game, and what's more is he's so consistently playful for the duration. Most people, or at least I, can't maintain that kind of optimism in their heart. It's also apparent how truly talented of an individual he is compared to other progamers. He seems to have a great mindset about working hard to achieve his goals, and I'm sure it helps having his wife there to support him all the way.
Bottom line, Grubby is great for ESPORTS! I'll be cheering for him from now on!!~
I've been is biggest fans since the WC3 days He truly is one of the greatest gaming icons of all time. Not only does he have a great personality and an open mindset, he is a incredible player aswell Not to many people can brag about being on the absolute top of two games at the same time (WC3 and SC2).
Totally agree with the OP and so much posts in this topic.. and i totally agree that subscribing is just worth it, a NN WallieP in chat from Grubby is ♥ Best streamer in sc2, most enjoyable, commentary, friendly, putting effort in improving a lot, and really hope he gets a major win pretty soon!
Many times of meeting him and a few interviews I did with him... all I can say is that Grubby is an amazing person, always wish him the best and I hope he does not stop giving the fans what they want
had the pleasure of meeting him at dreamhack after winning one of the jersey cups he held, super super nice guy and i really hope he will destroy everyone in 2012
I used to play Warcraft 3 as Orc. And needless to say who my favorite progamer was. Grubby is just a true inspiration to all the gamers out there who try to improve. Great person, great player with awesome attitude towards game and the community.
I'm always so happy when I receive the notification in my mail box about Grubby's stream. Keep it up Grubby. We'll keep following you
I didn't knew he had such a hard path on war3. It seemed to be "easy peasy" all along for him. It is nice to have a better grasp on his spirit. I wish the best for him in his own life path!
Grubby is amazing, we should put him on a peddle stool so the whole world can see how great our community is! because I can't think of anyone better than Grubby and of course boxer
Gretorp: Well Grubby, Idra said PvZ is unwinnable for zerg at the moment. Grubby: haha Idra said are the most important words there.. Gretorp: well played sir, well played.
Manner, spot on, realistic and very critical on himself.
I freaking love Grubby. He's just one of those people you can't not like, plus on top of that, he's sick good at RTS games and is incredibly entertaining.
I only wish I'd known about pro WC3 back when he was dominating that, so I could have become a fan earlier
He's also a brilliant role model for how I judge success in life, too. I'm not saying everyone judges success the same way, but the way I see it:
- He's been the best in the world at something. I'd love to be the best of 7bn people at something, someday. I'll certainly strive for it.
- He's multilingual and often can have (basic, but still flowing) conversations in many languages. To me personally, this is hugely awesome and a personal goal.
- He has a good work ethic and is committed to achieving his targets.

well if Grubby fanboys are spoiled, Moon fanboys should be considered super spoiled, because there were times, when every time he wouldnt make it at least Top 3 in a tournament, fans would be incredible disappointed.
lets just leave moon and sky out of this for comparisons, i know they are just as successful and i was only saying grubby fans are spoiled because of how much interaction, and how much he cares about his community!
Yeah, been a fan of his since the WC3 days. Probably the best pro-gamer to actually be a fan of. Skilled, hard working, and isn't a jerk. He doesn't complain either and always has a positive attitude. Glad he carried it over to SC2.
I've been a Grubby fan since the day I played Warcraft III. I remember playing Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne and I was just introduced to the competitive scene. Even as a Night Elf player, every time I would see a replay of 4k.Creo, Satiini, ReminD, or even the Night Elf God, Moon, I would immediately go and watch Grubby. It's not only his play that had dazzled me, but it was his true love for the game that had caught my eye. It's like he was part of the game, as if he was a Grunt or a Head Hunter himself.
I then started to see interviews of him and I automatically knew that some how, even with this guy not playing the race that I play, I like him more then any other player. It's hilarious because every time there would be a huge clan war for WC3L and Grubby or Moon matched up, I would be rooting for Grubster, and would get bashed by my Night Elf brothers. Luckily in Stacraft 2, Grubby and I had chosen the same race! Also for those of you who love Grubby and wanna know more of his past in Warcraft III, check out this video, gives me chills sometimes!
he gave inspiration to a generation of rts followers so indeed the rts scee is better for having him play wc3 i know ,st of tl holds almost no respect for wc3 and im fine with that. legions of wc3 players wanted to belive the koreans where unbeatable also . until grubby proved them all wrong .hes every bit as strong as good talented handsome and nice as anyone could be. thank you grubby for bein you.
I used to dislike Grubby. I thought he got too much hype because of how good he was a Warcraft, bu tit's obvious that he is dedicated to becoming great at SC2 and he seems really nice.
Grubby is the next protoss god. I really think that losing his steelseries sponsorship was the best thing for him, since that time he has revamped his stream, made it one of the best looking/running streams out their, he has partnered with twitch, and streams 6+ hours a day at least 5 days a week. He is so awesome to watch and he has improved by leaps and bounds with this steady practice schedule, I can't WAIT for him to put up tournament results in the future

Grubby is actually on team grubby which yes, is actually a team.
Everytime I join his stream chat, it's just cozy in there, rarely you see balance whining or trolling and stuff. When even your stream chat is mannered, you know you are doing it right.
In all pseudo seriousness, I love watching this guy play and his commentary is really good and he pulls Lolzy things like doing warcraft unit impersonations
He's a joy to watch, even when he's playing twos with his wife )
Grubby just is an awesome guy with a lot of talent in many different things(languages e.g) and has got a great character. You just can tell how he handles his chat and interacts with people. +1 Happy Zealot for Grubby here :D
More experience and solidity(well who am I to judge - at the very best what I grasp from watching ur awesome stream) in your gameplay and you WILL be able to own nerds left and right - probably even the big korean ones. You are getting there step by step!
As a dutchman who in general does not like dutch people and their attitude, i have to make an exception for grubby (and ret and everyone i forgot before i get into trouble) I wanted to hate him and find him an idiot because he was dutch, but i just cant He is kinda awesome.
wow playing 2v2 sc with the mrs on valentines day, thats so fucking awesome i never used to like grubby, but after watching his stream over the last few weeks hes one of my favourites now. He plays so well, his micro is incredible and hes a funny guy too (the joke about the waitress 'but lich in mirror' ha quality)
I play Zerg and Terran but Grubby is my favorite Player... I liked him from the moment I first saw him which was in NASL i beleave... Only Protoss player I enjoy watching the same as Dimaga and other top Zergs...
Grubby is the only player who I've gotten a friend of mine who has no interesting in watching SC2 to root for. I can be talking to her about my plans for the weekend or whatever, say "Yea this weekend I'm going to watch [insert SC2 tournament]" and she will ask "Is Grubby in it?! GO GRUBBY!" Every time.
What impressed me most is his improvement by going to Korea and only stay at oGs for 3 weeks, yet getting so much better in an incredible speed. I hope you will go back to Korea soon and stay a bit longer to see if there is more to be made.
Followed his whole WC3 career and now watching him establish himself in SC2 is just incredible. He's such an awesome guy and is very approachable; went out of his way to chat with me and my friends for 10 minutes.
Cool thread. I just love grubby's micro. You can definitely see the wc3/dota style in him. Constantly making sure to utilize blink cooldowns, ZONING with psistorm. He's one of my favorite players to watch. And who's that cute girl he's sitting next to! Wonder if they were together

Grubby is the bomb, defintely in my top 3 favorite people in the SC2 community. I think it's only a matter of time until he starts crushing nerds and becomes one of the best foreigners.

I dunno i think a mod on his stream told me about he doesn't really have a team, and funds his pro gamer finances with his own funding's, for the most part, but thanks anyways for the feedback!

Sadly, my background is kinda fucked, i wish i could work for e-sports! but right now i am worrying about getting my GED and trying to get in a plumber union with my older brother to make at least 30 bucks an hour!
Before watching his stream, ladder anxiety was killing me. I used to play for like a month, then quit. Come back a few months later and quit again. Even tho i never quit following the scene or any tournaments.
Now i really enjoy sc2. Winning or losing, i just love it.

I was going to play my placement matches right when season 5 started but then grubby got on
IIt chances that I have discovered his commentary videos on youtube just in the past few days, and watched the whole WC3 series, and my mind was blown. He's doubtless one of the most insighful gamers when it comes to commenting replays.
we met him in germany once and he asked us about our WoW team cuz we had a shaman on it. he proceeded to do the bloodlust roar and animation in person. coolest guy.
I believe he will get more and more successful as time passes, but sadly, I don't think he will ever be in Starcraft II what he was in Warcraft III, in other words, someone competing at the same level, if not above, than the Koreans.
At best he will be top-3 Protoss in Europe, which he might already be by the way.
Im wondering if Steelseries now regret their decision do not sponsor grubby any longer or if they still think it was the right move. I mean, they kinda canceled it right before Grubbys publicity & success in SC2 improved in an large amount.

However, go grubby!
Curious about this as well tbh, i hope Razer picks him up tbh or Alienware or something ^^
Glad to see old school fans, and new emerging sc2 fans for grubby coming together to praise him, just shows how awesome the people in his fan base are!!!

That and he very well may be the absolute best commentator for SC2 on the planet. Even moreso than the people who do it for a living.
That second part couldn't be more true! I completely agree and have thought this since around the time he started streaming heavily..
This for me sums up the man, met him at Dreamhack, had my keyboard ready for signing. Forgot my pen. 'I have a match now, but I can wait a minute'. just a great human being.
