Bans will be handed out.
Should go without saying, but don't link restreams here either. |

are the free VODs going to be HD as well ?
if the free VODs are SD and the paid service gets HD VODs I might consider paying up

One way of showing your appreciation for the players would be actually paying for the stream, not watching it for free because some guy decided it'd be a good idea to restream it illegally.

MLG pay 20$ or you can gtfo. For 3 days? LOL never If you look in the MLG feedback thread comments like this can be seen: Overall it was really great, absolutely worth the bucks and I will support it in the future. Not perfect though, there is still room for improvement. For 20$ there should be no comments like this. Sorry. I expected it to be top notch. What? There should be no comments like "absolutely worth the bucks and I will support in the future?" Like...seriously what? When someone is completely satisfied with the purchase and vows to support buying more of their purchase in the future, that's BAD? Comments like this convinced me to pay the twenty bucks in round 2. Saying these comments show some sort of failure because there is "room for improvement" is a little silly. Act like you don't get it. If I would buy the MLG pass I would act like I like it and don't regret it, because humans don't like to confirm that they made a mistake. The fact that there are still complains and that they hope they will get better in the future is bad and shows that the product is not final. For 20$ it better be polished. So you honestly believe that because it was ppv there should be absolutely no room for improvement at all, meaning the event is perfect in every aspect of the word? Those are some realistic expectations. Not of the PPV but for the 20$. The higher the price the higher the expectations. I wouldn't buy a Ferrari to realize that the dvd player is not functioning well and say : Oh whell, it's worth the money but there is room for improvement. Yeah, and that Ferrari doesn't get 60 mpg, so there's room for improvement. The Ferrari is also a terrible off road vehicle, and it only seats 2!?! There's room for improvement. Dude, read the freaking feedback thread. They are not talking about adding new features, but making the ones they promised work. 1080p didn't even work for most of the people because of lag. If you have a 1.5 mbit dsl connection, you won't be able to play 1080p (with good quality), 720p is a stretch sometimes. Our broadband in the US sucks, especially in the midwest-west rural states. In my area, high speed dsl, being 7-20 mbits was available just this last year. Not everyone has access to cable, and there are still large chunks of area without upgraded phone lines.
So you accuse the ones complaining being retarded because they don't know their internet connection capabilities? I think the ones complaining were the actual ones with solid internet. Like I have for example and couldn't watch it though I can watch any other HD stream.
Or what about "vods will be up the moment the game finishes?". There are many things that I know are not how they were promised but whatever. Let Esports grow.

sorry, if you have to pay full price for a show that goes from midnight through to 5am, something is wrong.
obviously if it was earlier it would clash with assembly, but nonetheless when you're making exclusive content that's extremely inconvenient for non-americans - imo it SHOULD NOT BE FULL PRICE for non-americans.
oh, and watching the vods the following day IS NOT WORTH PPV.
how do the teams/players feel when the viewer base is cut to 20% or lower because the vast majority have been alienated? it's far more important to get recognition than even to win prize money. PPV does the opposite.

Retarded is an exaggeration but otherwise i agree.
Also bandwidth isn't the be all end all of computer networking. Jitter, latency, and packet loss is also huge contributors to shitty stream stability.
I have 100/100 Mbit and should be able to watch any kind of stream, yet i can't because of the previously mentioned problems.

The problem with lag has been a consistant one whenever MLG has used twitch for distribution, for every single one of their qualifiers I've had the same kind of lag issues. I can watch any other stream off of twitch in 1080p for a whole day and not get any lag, then switch to the MLG stream and it'd be laggy as hell. Fortunately there seemed to be enough people complaining about it last night so they at least seem to have solved the lag issues for all but the 1080p option.

I have to agree with others. It doesnt really make sense to buy the 20$ pass for europeans: - tournament lasts way to late into the night (~7am in CET), I'd like to watch until 3-4am - during the first test hour 1080p lagged a lot, and 3-4 stream split only worked if you scale down a lot (many people reported this and twitch is known for its EU issues)

Since we payed for VODs ... you need to fix em.. atm its just freeze lag in every VOD..

Why is it possible to monetize pretty much any sporting event by ads, but somehow its difficult for starcraft. Even the UFC for example had very good reason to go PPV. I have no experience in marketing but it seems to me that you get much better deal sponsoring esports event since your logo is placed pretty much everywhere and casters are talking about you all the time. The only real issue i can comprehend is that audience just isnt large enough yet. If its the case, overpriced PPV is the most riddiculous thing you can come up with IMHO.
EDIT: I'm sure MLG tried to get some higher profile sponsors, and its a shame they cant discoles who refused to work with them. I would love to not support those companies.

No offense but this is a pretty ignorant view.
You need to realize the "size" of e-sports.
The amount of people daily who watch daytime television is greater than e-sports. And that's local programming, not worldwide.
At the end of the day, the monetization from ads is only possibly in television because of the insane number of viewing audiences, and the demographics.
The demographics that watch SC2 aren't the best. It's a lot of highschool/college-aged kids with minimal purchasing power. There are some adults, but it's not like television where you're carving such a large swathe.
In the end, the companies that are sponsoring sc2/e-sports right now are most likely doing so on an experimental basis IE Monster with EG where their rep is a guy who does other fringe extreme sports.
You can't on one hand claim to not know the details of advertising and the finances involved then on the other hand criticize MLG for that. Well, you can, but you look foolish.
|
Also people think that sponsoring = funding the entire event.
Sometimes the sponsorship could be a very small amount.

Depends on the standards everyone has. I for one don't like to pay the same as someone who is seeing it live. It's absurd.

This happens with pretty much every other sport ever. Get over it.
If you don't want to stay up late, don't pay.
If you love it that much, chances are you'll want to stay up late on a fri/sat night. Or at the very worst watch the VOD the next day.
