In the US it might be acceptable for sporting events to be PPV... but it's certainly not here in Europe. The only PPV events we get here in the UK are for big boxing matches and WWE, both with very niche markets that are both used to PPVs. PPVs simply don't happen here. We have sports channels which you pay to subscribe to, and for $20 you can get yourself a month of Sky Sports here (The premier sport channesl here in the UK.)

It can be explained by several factors but also because this business model is new, so whatever the price is. So if you want to try this business model, it was smarter to start high and then lower the price. The difference at first is not that big and give better oportunities afterwards. Especially with a good reputation like the one MLG has. IMO PPV is a very bad business model for E-Sport in general. It may get more money short term out of the existing fanbase but in the long run it makes sure, that not many new people will get into SC2. Most potential new viewers won't be willing to pay money for it. I don't think, the existing fanbase will create staple longterm-revenue, therefore PPV will only lead to a slow decrease of the overall fanbase, wich will effect sponsorships, merchandise-sales and all other possible incomesources for turnaments and teams too.

And I'm so tired of this pseudo charity mentality we're expected to have about esports. "These companies need to make money to grow Starcraft so you're a bad person if you don't buy their stuff" is utter nonsense. You want a real business truth? If you can't price your product competitively then you probably shouldn't be in the market at all.

Exactly. For non subscribers it is more or less 'if you don't want to pay that much don't buy it', but for those of us with Gold it feels really lame. I am not a huge fan of the fact that the year GSL pass doesn't cover the team league, but I get it. They are two different leagues. With MLG it was sort of like "Come buy this pass and you get all the MLG content for the year!". Then the next MLG event rolls around and they say "Oh, no this will be another $20..."

MLG Moneygrabber *cough* sundance is really showing his style...... I can't actually believe that.... What about the other game streams? Are they going to make people pay for them as well or is it just the Sc2 community taking the fall for their shortcomings?

"All current Gold Members will receive $5 off the Winter Arena. We will be emailing all Gold Members a discount code by the end of this week (by the end of the day on Friday, 2/17). Thanks, MLG" It's not much, but its something!

I think you're making a good point with the acceptance in the US and in Europe. In Germany most people don't even subscribe to Sky. The constitutional court has judged that major events that are of interest for a large part of the population, e.g. World Cups, have to be shown on free TV. Bundesliga games for example can only be seen live on Sky, but roundups are shown in free TV shortly after. That's why not many people get Sky and they have been making losses here for years. We just don't have a culture of Pay TV or even Pay Per View and if most people don't even pay for football live games, I can't see many people paying 20$ for one weekend of Sc2. Oh and don't forget, that the schedules those tournaments are played are far from ideal for people from Europe making it even less appealing to pay for it. Well, I'll be watching Assembly and I hope this MLG turns out the way I think it will. One big fail.

But still in my opinion it's just unfair to raise 20$, because I believe most fans can not afford that and will be excluded from this event. MLG (and a few others) do you want to make Starcraft 2 only for the wealthy? I mean what if every 3 day tourney costs 20$? Pay a few hundred $ per year just for esports? What if you are a student, pupil, live in a needier region of earth? Antisocial decision making!

That discount is like the worst possible way for them to say they're sorry. Gold Members have already paid for the content. They're charging us twice for the same thing and their grand solution is to discount the second charge? Cute MLG.

The fact that $10 is the cap on being competitively priced, however, seems to show how limited this market really is - and is likely to remain.

Going to be a tough choice. I want to support MLG, but this doesn't seem like a cost-effective way to do it. Like many people are already saying, if it wasn't the same weekend as Assembly it would be a much easier sell.

People who value live viewing will pay for MLG Arena. People who don't will pay GSL for its VODs and get the Arena VODs for free. And people who love everything will get both. The number of games is hardly an issue. There's so much SC2 being played publicly by pros that you can get as many pro games as you'd ever want for free. This is about getting more out of the scene than just the games. I personally get very little entertainment out of the GSL. There are a lot of reasons why an event like MLG Arena will be way better for me. I agree with Nony here. I like GSL, but only when Tastless and Artosis are on. Even then, I bearly watched in the TvT era when it was faceless terran vs faceless terran. It is only recently that the GSL has gotten back into having fun, enjoyable players like MC, Geninus and MKP back into the finals and for me to enjoy. MLG bring so much more. The entire community shows up for the event, along with the best from Korea. It has to be more than just number of games played. It has to be compelling characters that we want to see win. Seeing Liquid Hero nearly break down on stage was one of the best moments in SC2 for me last year. With Tasteless and Day9 trying to announce him has the winner while Team Liquid rushed the stage. GOM has none of that and it is something that I am willing to pay for if MGL can deliver. A local, live SC2 league that happens 4, 6 or 8 times a year is worth investing in.
