Are the other games being played there being forced to pay for their steams as well?

$20 ? Put that idea in your pipe and smoke it. Charge $5 and you will have more revenue and viewers. Im fine with them charging but hey lets get the pricing right here.

I think MLG are looking at this without looking at the fact that they are a global event.

In the US it might be acceptable for sporting events to be PPV... but it's certainly not here in Europe. The only PPV events we get here in the UK are for big boxing matches and WWE, both with very niche markets that are both used to PPVs.

PPVs simply don't happen here. We have sports channels which you pay to subscribe to, and for $20 you can get yourself a month of Sky Sports here (The premier sport channesl here in the UK.)

10$ = yes
20$ = no...

like Spooony said u get Sky Sports for 20$ one month! And especially for european with the bad time its not worth it.
So i wait 1 week to watch some good games.

You seem so sure of how well this will go for MLG. How can you be so sure? Wouldn't starting at 5-10 dollar then ramping up with better content and more stable streams be a better choice than alienating alot of the viewers and giving PPV a negative sound from the get go?

I am one of the guys who's paid for all GSLs since s1 and i've bought 2010-2011 Blizzcon stream tickets. I wont be buying this and wont be buying it later on either if they keep up this crappy attitude. A weekend tournament with no crowd with less player skill than the GSL at horrible times for EU isn't really a good start to start charging money. Especially when it's more than i pay for a month of premium soccer, hockey, movies, and series.

I said it makes more sense taking the approach they are. Yeah, they can start out at $5 or $10, but the content is already good depending on what your view on good content is and the streams are stable, if technical issues occur, they will occur regardless. But if you start off at $5-$10, then they want to increase it to $15-$20, people will get mad that they could pay $5 or $10 and then all of a sudden why should they have to pay $15 or $20 for the same content or maybe a slight increase but people felt it's not worth it in the future. Instead they can start off higher to see how the community feels about it, and they can lower the price for future Arena to something that the community will find reasonable and people will pay for it and everything will work out better. Either way people were going to complain about paying $20 for the stream, better they can establish that now at the start rather than starting low and then in the future piss people off by increasing the amount.

Also every tournament outside of the GSL will have players that are less skilled playing, and the EU is just one part of the world that will watch. But even then, it's like GSL, the VoD will be available to those who paid for the pass

I agree with you considering the poll in the first page of this thread.
- 89% would not buy a 20$ ticket
- 72% would not buy a 10$ ticket (5$ for gold members)

There is only a slight difference. It can be explained by several factors but also because this business model is new, so whatever the price is. So if you want to try this business model, it was smarter to start high and then lower the price. The difference at first is not that big and give better oportunities afterwards. Especially with a good reputation like the one MLG has.

IMO PPV is a very bad business model for E-Sport in general. It may get more money short term out of the existing fanbase but in the long run it makes sure, that not many new people will get into SC2. Most potential new viewers won't be willing to pay money for it.
I don't think, the existing fanbase will create staple longterm-revenue, therefore PPV will only lead to a slow decrease of the overall fanbase, wich will effect sponsorships, merchandise-sales and all other possible incomesources for turnaments and teams too.

I totaly agree, PPV is a very bad business for E-Sport.
Paid like 5 bux for a season of GSL, totaly worth it and i will be doing it again. But to pay 20 bux for 3 days of MLG? wtf?

This doesnt help the community at all imo :/

I'm REALLY not pleased with how they're treating their gold members. Like Nony, I love watching games live...which is exactly why I bought my gold membership. MLG isn't just charging me $20 for Arena, they're charging me for Arena after I've already paid for it. That's no bueno.

And I'm so tired of this pseudo charity mentality we're expected to have about esports. "These companies need to make money to grow Starcraft so you're a bad person if you don't buy their stuff" is utter nonsense. You want a real business truth? If you can't price your product competitively then you probably shouldn't be in the market at all.

Exactly. For non subscribers it is more or less 'if you don't want to pay that much don't buy it', but for those of us with Gold it feels really lame. I am not a huge fan of the fact that the year GSL pass doesn't cover the team league, but I get it. They are two different leagues. With MLG it was sort of like "Come buy this pass and you get all the MLG content for the year!". Then the next MLG event rolls around and they say "Oh, no this will be another $20..."

WOW, gold members have to pay for it as well? MLG Moneygrabber *cough* sundance is really showing his style...... I can't actually believe that....

What about the other game streams? Are they going to make people pay for them as well or is it just the Sc2 community taking the fall for their shortcomings?

To gold members of MLG, I paste an email i got from MLG:
"All current Gold Members will receive $5 off the Winter Arena. We will be emailing all Gold Members a discount code by the end of this week (by the end of the day on Friday, 2/17).
Thanks, MLG"

I think you're making a good point with the acceptance in the US and in Europe.
In Germany most people don't even subscribe to Sky. The constitutional court has judged that major events that are of interest for a large part of the population, e.g. World Cups, have to be shown on free TV. Bundesliga games for example can only be seen live on Sky, but roundups are shown in free TV shortly after. That's why not many people get Sky and they have been making losses here for years. We just don't have a culture of Pay TV or even Pay Per View and if most people don't even pay for football live games, I can't see many people paying 20$ for one weekend of Sc2.
Oh and don't forget, that the schedules those tournaments are played are far from ideal for people from Europe making it even less appealing to pay for it.
Well, I'll be watching Assembly and I hope this MLG turns out the way I think it will. One big fail.

As there are so many of my favourite players participating at the winter arena, i guess i will pay for it if paypal is possible, as I have no credit card and honestly don't want one.

But still in my opinion it's just unfair to raise 20$, because I believe most fans can not afford that and will be excluded from this event. MLG (and a few others) do you want to make Starcraft 2 only for the wealthy? I mean what if every 3 day tourney costs 20$? Pay a few hundred $ per year just for esports? What if you are a student, pupil, live in a needier region of earth?

Antisocial decision making!

That discount is like the worst possible way for them to say they're sorry. Gold Members have already paid for the content. They're charging us twice for the same thing and their grand solution is to discount the second charge? Cute MLG.

Indeed. If you can't price it competitively, you are unlikely to be in the market.

The fact that $10 is the cap on being competitively priced, however, seems to show how limited this market really is - and is likely to remain.

ooo...so VODs will be free? Then for sure i won't be paying if i can just watch it later. Won't be as good as live but now i dont have to spend all weekend waiting for certain matches. I can just watch at my own pace a week later.

I'm definitely going to watch, but I may just wait until the following weekend and so for free. I can already get my Starcraft fix with Assembly that weekend, free of charge.

Going to be a tough choice. I want to support MLG, but this doesn't seem like a cost-effective way to do it. Like many people are already saying, if it wasn't the same weekend as Assembly it would be a much easier sell.

$20 is just a bit much. GSL offers like four times the amount of games, and a ton more players to watch for $20 per season (like, $6 a month.)

I wouldn't mind if they had a $5 a month subscription fee that gave me access to all of their games... the problem is, they just don't have the amount of games, nor the quality, of GSL. In a world where an eSports fan doesn't have unlimited money and they have to choose between GSL and MLG... I think they'd choose GSL anyday.

MLG Arena VODs are free. GSL live stream is free. They are opposites and they both make sense because of the extreme time zone differences.

People who value live viewing will pay for MLG Arena. People who don't will pay GSL for its VODs and get the Arena VODs for free. And people who love everything will get both.

The number of games is hardly an issue. There's so much SC2 being played publicly by pros that you can get as many pro games as you'd ever want for free. This is about getting more out of the scene than just the games. I personally get very little entertainment out of the GSL. There are a lot of reasons why an event like MLG Arena will be way better for me.

I agree with Nony here. I like GSL, but only when Tastless and Artosis are on. Even then, I bearly watched in the TvT era when it was faceless terran vs faceless terran. It is only recently that the GSL has gotten back into having fun, enjoyable players like MC, Geninus and MKP back into the finals and for me to enjoy.

MLG bring so much more. The entire community shows up for the event, along with the best from Korea. It has to be more than just number of games played. It has to be compelling characters that we want to see win.

Seeing Liquid Hero nearly break down on stage was one of the best moments in SC2 for me last year. With Tasteless and Day9 trying to announce him has the winner while Team Liquid rushed the stage. GOM has none of that and it is something that I am willing to pay for if MGL can deliver. A local, live SC2 league that happens 4, 6 or 8 times a year is worth investing in.
