People choosing to watch a free tournament instead of paying money for one!?
You should all be ashamed! It's not like MLG is a business and has to earn our dollars, we should just give them wheelbarrows of cash in order to grow ESPORTS! If you don't pay $20, it means you are a failure in life and have a small penis!
Get over yourself buddy, I don't think you understand how business works. It's really hard to charge money for a product when the market is saturated with similar products that are offered for free.

Not going to buy it, I do not have a lot of disposable income and since I won't be sitting the entire 20hours out (and im EU, so I'll have to catch some sleep as well) I can't justify it to myself. Besides, if I'd want a great VOD experience I also could go to GSL for more VODs for less money. Eventhough I oftentimes do compare time/€ ratios to consider what to buy, I still think there's more to it. If I go see a small concert or go to the cinema, I don't just pay for two hours of entertainment. The kind of entertainment I find at those places can not be found at home, or anywhere else for a (much cheaper) price. Comparing MLG to Assembly, GSL or other high-profile tournaments, I'd say that I can get a comparable experience at home for free/ a lot cheaper. I'm not saying it's not worth the money, but I can find a comparable experience for a lower price (and I do not run out of supply for that, since I can't keep up with GSL + all other major tournaments anyway). Besides, if I would compell myself to buy everything that was worth the money, I'd be in huge depths right now. I do not think that MLG should make this free, it's their content and they can price it as they like.

Then why are you being an imbecile?
It's simple business, a ton of tournaments are offering awesome content for free so people say, "Yeah, I don't feel like paying an extra $20 when I'm already getting all this great content".
We're not entitled to free content, but we're getting so much great Starcraft 2 content for free that some of us don't feel like paying $20 for a single tournament. It just makes no sense, particularly when you consider that people don't devote every waking hour to watch Starcraft and the fact that there is more than enough content to satisfy most viewers out there. Pair that with potential clashes with Assembly in terms of when this tournament airs and you have a pretty well rounded reason for why I don't feel like paying for this event.
I'm not entitled to getting MLG Winter Arena for free, they aren't entitled to getting $20 for me. It's simple business, there are comparable or better products out there for cheaper, I choose those.

Finally after a year of hoping that Starcraft would explode as an esport, an opportunity comes along where we can prove that it can be monetised and can be a sustainable bussiness that will have real profits (and not just free stream viewers) to show to bigger sponsors and secure larger investment... and you guys can't justify $1/hour of content.
What a real shame that is. MLG knew this would be an unpopular decision. But somebody has to man up and start monetising esports, and frankly if MLG can't do it, then who the hell can?
Please, just think of all the great content MLG has given us last year alone. This is the hour when your support will count the most. If this event succeeds, then esports will grow, it is as simple as that. Just this once we need to prove we are willing to part with our cash to support our hobby, just like fans of every other sport are willing to do on a far more routine and more expensive basis.
If you can afford the $20, and you don't spend it, then as melodramatic as it may sound, you are killing esports. MLG really stuck their heads out on this one, there is no way all this bad PR is worth the measly amount they will earn from this event, and the loss in ad revenue may even hurt them. But they understand better than you do what needs to happen for esports to grow.
Reading these threads really makes me wonder if an esport will ever manage to acheive mainstream popularity with such a shortsighted and cheap fanbase. Really, its making me pretty depressed.
Do the right thing guys, or dont complain when in next years time absolutely nothing has changed.
People will look back on this in years to come, and wonder why the hell such an avid and hardcore fanbase came up with so many excuses not to support their passion. Don't be one of those people. First of all sponsors don't care how much money MLG makes, only how many people are watching and how many times you see their product during the event. Less people watching = less (need for) sponsors. Sponsors do care about the demographic that's watching, though. And if 90% of that demographic is people who can't or won't spend $20 for a weekend of entertainment, then they might rightly wonder whether it's worth their money to advertise to that demographic. That's not really that easy either. Numbers count just as much as possible sales to the people watching. They count because the people they're targeting are multipliers and have so called expert properties, meaning other people will ask them for advice on what to buy even if the people themselves might not be spending the money. Because my parents ask me what stuff for computers to buy it might be a good idea to show me free streams with intel ads even if I didn't buy a computer for ages and probably won't for the next two years. So no, sponsors would probably still prefer the considerably bigger numbers if it was exclusive and here's the extra cherry on top: the bigger numbers here are ALWAYS preferrable for the sponsors because whoever would pay for the stream will probably watch it whether there's a LQ free stream or not. Obviously that's leaving out like ten other factors but please stop arguing with economics. If you don't work in that business or study it, it's not your place to judge it. I do work in business, and if you think marketers are happy to market to kids who can't get their parents spend $20 on entertainment because their parents see them as electronics experts, then you have no idea what you're talking about.
So you work in business...like what, every second person on the planet? Big credibility surge I see there. Sorry, I just studied BA, specialized in marketing strategies and market research (two sided markets even), worked in CRM and e-commerce and count quite a number of marketing guys as friends. Can we stop this crap now? It's not about kids getting people to spend money on something they don't want, wtf is wrong with your view of this world? Your whole sentence doesn't even make a lot of sense. You market to these people for quite a number of factors and your view of it is what people thought about marketing decades ago. Ultimately you market to people because you want to alter and utilize natural consumer behaviour. These kids who can't afford it now might graduate in a year and remember your company's logo over that of competitiors. Recognition achieved. Some of them just don't want to pay (X amount) for a show by principle but are willing to pay for what they perceive as worth the money (say, hardware). Any marketer who doesn't reach out to the long term effects you can get at a very low price just misses opportunities, too. Compared to most of the ads the companies I worked for ran you can sponsor e-sports events for nearly free. 10000$ for rock climbing events at universities promoting soft drinks? You get that stuff approved in minutes even when you already know it's not going to reach more than 10000 people. 50000 viewers online with high involvement and a clearly defined demographic don't sound too bad in comparison.

Anyone else find the 100k number for player expenses laughable?
Let's say the average roundtrip flight is $2000 (LOL), that's $64,000 for flights. Let's say MLG is stupid, and books individual rooms for each player at $250, that's another 24k. That's 88k total. That leaves 12k for food (if MLG is even paying for that) and local travel. Just what is MLG feeding these guys then?
And that's using ridiculous high numbers and expectations. MLG makes hundreds of flights a year, so they should get good deals for flights using their name on a random February weekend. Same logic applies for their hotel rooms (which the players should be staying together too). If they aren't getting these kinds of deals, then they really need to look over their budgeting/business practices. I cannot imagine the expenses costing more than 55k.

Also, it is a great thing for MLG to show their sponsors and investors. That we are willing to spend money on the event directly and support it. All of the stream numbers that are thrown around are great and impressive, but they do not mean that even 1% of them will translate into sales. Sponsors are selective as to how they spend their money and MLG is completing for money that may just end up funding a commercial.
As someone who had a full time job every summer since he was 14, $20 is a bit, but not world changing. I once collected cans for three weeks to buy a copy of Xcom because I had no job.

Whether or not 20 bucks is a lot doesn't matter. MLG should realise that majority of their viewers are actually minors with very little cash to shell out for events like these. There is a reason why there are so many ads and endorsement - that way the event should be able to pay for itself and grow, in order to help growing the economically active viewership for which 20 bucks is not a lot.
I mean it makes sense short term - the ticket will sure prodive more money per customer than the ad. rev, but this will not help the indsutry grow nor the interest of sponsors. If I pay 20 bucks for a weekend of watching couple game videos I better not see A SINGLE FUCKING AD.

Now they want to make some money for all of this effort, you know, like the REST OF THE GOD DAMN WORLD DOES, and you people are crying like little girls
It's DISGUSTING. GROW UP AND GET A JOB IF YOU WANT TO BE INCLUDED IN ADULT ACTIVTITES
You must be so spoiled to think like that. And people should stop claiming that: - 20$ is nothing - people who complain should get a job Both are offensive. Spoiled huh? LOL! So me getting a degree and starting a business to make money makes me spoiled? Because I'm not a moron, and I understand how business work, I'm spoiled? Because I enjoy paying for things to ensure more of the same things continue, I'm spoiled? Because I'd like to support esports and make sure players/coachers/management can feed their kids and pay their mortgages IM SPOILED? LOLLLLL you're not spoiled you're just dumb and willing to ask how high when a corporation tells you to jump, particularly a corporation that expects you to shell out for plane tickets for korean gamers when that should be the job of the teams they represent, should it not? well if tournament sponsors don't foot some of the bills there won't be koreans at any tourney scenes MLG pays Koreans to come and we pay MLG to pay the Koreans. I don't see any sponsors in this proposed loop. To be precise MLG are tournament organizers, but at the same time they're also sponsors
And that's the problem. We need new money to enter the scene, not old money recycled. PPV doesn't welcomes sponsors.
