Blizzard should just advertise the game more on public media. This is the only way to get players back. Maybe they could lower the price too. Maybe 20€ or so would be fine. In my school class there are 2 guys who might play sc2 if it wouldn't be that expansive.

Hitting C- was like a party and it's still incredibly low in the scope of everything, and the chances of be even beating a C+ are immensely small.

just doesn't bring the same sense of accomplishment.

So true, masters doesn't feel like an accomplishment at all since if you git it season before you will most likely get it again unless you lost a lot on purpose or lost a lot in general.

Iccup everyone started over every season and I remember reaching C-/C and celebrating. I remember beating my first B- player and felt like I was a boss lol. Good days

I think if they would to reset all ranks/MMR every season the ladder would be alot more fun. By playing one match season after season and get right back where you was the earlier season kills the desire to grind ladder for me and many others.

That way, your rank may actually mean something too. If they would make the gap between each league bigger so not everyone can get into master by just having solid macro would make it much more fun too. I personally would love if they just removed all the lame names on the league and went with a iccup system or some ELO/True MMR system with only points like in most games today. This why you can say, yes I'm a B Terran or I'm a 2k Terran and people would kinda get your skill level you know. This doesn't work AT ALL in the current ladder system.

It's because people don't know how to have fun unless they get something for it. I play ladder because I have fun playing the game and I want to get better. Idk why people are so fascinated with getting a fucking league promotion since who you play is all based on mmr anyways.

It seems like if people aren't rewarded with useless shit they have no motivation to play games at all, which is sad because playing games should be about having fun not getting a fucking portrait.

School could be another reason why people have stopped playing though, as exams are coming up pretty soon for university students.

My main problem with the ladder at this point is just the fact that it demands a lot of attention. Starcraft 2 ladder games require 100% of my attention, and its tiring. It is enjoyable, don't get me wrong, but it is also something that requires a level of effort that after a 12 hour day doing my normal stuff I am not always ready to put in. So, evne if I have an hour to spend on gaming, I don't always feel compelled to put that into SC2 ladder. It is generally all I can do to use up my bonus pool during a ladder season.

Here are my opinions on why the ladder seems to be decreasing:

1. The ladder anxiety you mentioned above is really hard to get past for the new or casual player. This ties in with the stress of wanting to do your best and believing you're skilled with the knowledge to do so.

2. The communication... While sc2 has the ability for players to join chat channels to discuss gameplay, competition, etc. it is not as easy to find players with like minded skill or interests. I suggest if bnet wasn't going to take a big change then update the chat channels to include current clan chat channels that are open so players can find active clans and discuss gameplay, membership, etc easily.

3. The need for more tournaments that every level of player can join with fair and equal skill levels. Playhem does these, but they aren't advertised to a player base who doesn't already know of esports. I would go with automated tournaments like the OP said or have bnet advertise more tournments like Playhem.

4. Become a better community. The game that has the most competitive spirit while doing it's best to educate and help the new players will succeed far more likely then any other game.

Seriously, who so offensive? You need to try to understand other people's POV more. Some people like you may have fun by improving your skill while others have fun by getting promoted whether it'll be 3rax all in, 4 gate or 6 pool all game. And there are those who like collecting portraits.

I share this point of view. SC2 is NOT the type of game I want to play if I have a couple hours to chill out before going to bed after a long day. I need to be awake, alert, and in a good mood to enjoy the game.

I have always wondered, how many active users did Iccup have at a time? How did match making work? I was not one of those luckly people who got into the BW scene and always wanted to know.

The Bnet 2.0 ladder is pretty amazing for someone who has played a lot of RTS games in the last 10 years. There is nothing that even comes close to the match making and placement.(or netcode for that matter, looking at you Relic). Still I have lost some of my drive in the last year. New maps have done a lot of push me back to the game, but there are part of the ladder I do not like to deal with. In week or two when the ladder locks, SC2 might as well be dead to me. After three seasons of dealing idiots spamming as many games, as fast as possible, I realised that nothing good can be gained from playing during those weeks. I have had people curse me out for not leaving a game after 6 pooling or marine-SCV rushing me. Still, SC2 is connected to the internet, so what did I really expect?

I posted this in the "LoL now #1 sport in Korea thread", but it applies here as well:

I'm a Masters player that started with SC2 and now spends more time playing LoL...

SC2
- more mechanical demand
- bigger punishments for mistakes, normally game-ending
- less room for comebacks
- less social
- dwindling competition (at a scary rate... season 2 - 2,000,000 people. season 5 - 500,000)
- team battles aren't taken seriously
- game seems less balanced for 99% of the player base

I enjoy watching SC2 more than LoL, but LoL is still enjoyable to watch and it's way more fun to play.

My personal reason for switching over to mostly LoL is that I don't think SC2 is close to balanced below pro level. Having the option to FFE into 8 gates and beat top 8 Master Zergs, likewise for 4-gate in PvP... why would I do anything else? Put MORE mechanical demand on myself for LESS chance of winning so that eventually when my mechanics are good enough I can play the top 0.1%? No thanks. If using easy strategies will land me in the top 4%, then I will do just that.

Damage is just done too quickly and unpleasant surprises are 99% of the time game ending... only people with deep mastery of the game will be able play out the game in a non-derpy way.

There is nothing worse that losing a game to some scrub because you were tired. It is why rarely play after work. After dealing with angry/stupid clients and writting complex documents all day, I have limited mental stamina to deal with SC2. And no matter what anyone says, you need to be on your game to deal with cheese and all ins. You cannot half ass your defense against a good 1/1/1.

1v1 gets boring. Lack of good custom games after nearly 2 years is heartbreaking. Reached my peak(a year of top 200 ranking) a while ago and lost motivation.

In SC2 I did not make a SINGLE friend online, whereas 3 months into dota2, I have a huge friendlist and always have groups to play with. Look at the DotA2 UI compared to battle net 0.2's and you'll see why the game is so dull and lacks community. The TL/Reddit channels in DotA2 have constant matchmaking/inhouse requests whereas on bnet nothing ever seems to be going on.

You can't say that this is because a difference in games because in BroodWar, I had a blast and maxed out my list, and always played awesome customs or 3v3 bgh's with people. BW had amazing customs with HUGE niche communities built off of them, SC2 has nothing like that. For example in BW's prime, Lord of the Ring customs alone had like 15 clans built off it with their own filled channels and constant games being created.

Basically, SC2 has shitty team games(bad customs, no bgh type of scene, etc. aka monobattles is the closest we have, and that gets boring quite fast). A terrible battle.net interface, lack of proper chat channels, replay viewing, live spectating, custom game creating.

The 1v1 aspect is gets boring REALLY fast. Do you play to improve or to win? Either way you are grinding games alone with no real motivation. Is it actually fun? I thought it was for a good amount of time, but eventually I got burnt out.

IMO the easiest way for Blizzard to make SC2 fun again is to allow us to create custom games with our own game names, instead of the retarded system where it only shows the map. In the current SC2 custom scene, you pretty much join a game, play with randoms, and never see them ever again.

Probably because the chat windows are so small.

Oh wait.. nevermind.

Actual reasons:

- the game is too hard for most
- people don't like to lose
- there is zero sense of community

I don't really care about any of those reasons but I can assure you other people do.. I really think they missed the boat when they dropped all of the good stuff WC3 did. (Race specific ladder ranking, tournaments, chat, etc).
I don't have time to play with myself

It does bother me that there is no "general chat" that I can just drop into after a game I lost and talk about it. I would feel better about my losses if I could bitch/work on it with people. Or just hop in after the game and review the match with a buddy or people in the chat:

Also, we could say things like this

Player 1: "Have you played bad_player_14yearold(bnet link to profile)? He 6 pools every game against protoss"

Player 2: "Yeah, I just played him, he baneling busts ever game too"

Player 3: "This is good to know, he is around my rank.

I would like to feel that would happen. Maybe with patch 1.5.

I think the problem is the leagues. While it is a great idea, we're all human and thus, most of us have egos that require that we be in the best possible league.

For example, in my prime I was masters in everything. For reasons I cannot begin to understand, I would pretty much rather not play a game at all and stay in masters than actually play the game. This is obviously the worst logic ever but look at the poll... many others feel that way.

I think one solution is to do the ranking Warcraft 3 style. You're skill is a number (a "level"), not a league. There are only 6 leagues, and while the difference between the top and bottom of a single league can be huge, all people care about is saying "I'm masters" or "I'm gold"... etc. If it was the difference between being level 16 and 17... you wouldn't care as much.

Currently the penalty for losing is that you *might* drop AN ENTIRE LEAGUE, rather than "just one level", which wouldn't really be a big deal.

Just my 2 cents.
Apologize.

I think this is a big deal. Its hard to persuade my friends who are all big Supreme Commander fans to shell out €40-50 each to give SC2 a proper go.

For me I couldn't vote for JUST one.

Bad chat, stressful, friends on other games [such as DotA 2, where I can play with all of them] and takes too much time. =[

I still like to occasional game to keep up with my mechanics so if i ever wanna go back, i can.
