B.net 2.0 is so bad that it's ridiculous. How can people with so much power fuck up so badly?

The exact same arguments of "social structure" were used to advocate SC2's system and see what we got. And they've got it wrong, so horribly wrong. SC/BW's and WC3's chat system weren't a system prone to abuse, they were the very backbone of the "social structure". It was like meeting people at a bar, or in the mall, or in a lecture hall. Sure, you always had some annoying folks in there as well, but it was mostly filled with people interested in the same thing as you were. You quickly met people or could get questions answered. Right now, we're lacking these large meeting places. It's like "Hey, sure you can hang out with your friends, but only at their place or at yours. But we're not giving you any places to actually meet and make new friends." Chat channels weren't implemented in SC2 with the argument that they were filled with spammers, bots and unfriendly folks insulting the newbies. Sure, that did happen, but everyone - EVERYONE - agreed that you have to take the bad with the good, and such is the price of an open chat system. It's like Blizzard has the pros and cons completely backward. The first time i read a company being against a Chat in their online service, was Relic/Dow2. Back then i just couldn't believe what i was reading and was laughing it off (and there were even people supporting the lack of chat channels)... It's not funny anymore.

But by me joining, I only contribute to the friggin' problem!! Argh... then, in the scenario as I said before, some gold Protoss joins, and the game autostarts, without me having time to tell him "hey, I'm masters, this won't be a fun game." So either I quit, or he quits, or the game starts and someone leaves ASAP, or it's a stupid game that ensues. /RANT You and everyone else. No amount of tweaking the popularity ratings will fix this. There needs to be a way for players to browse a list of hosted games. At least they DID eventually put chat in SC2 even if just the bare minimum.

I'm just going to come straight out and say, as a player, I think you're wrong. It's hard to really have a community without open public chat channels. There was almost no moderation, if any, in the D2 public channels. There just needs to be watering-hole type areas for people to gather and meet and discuss and talk about the game. I mean how are you supposed to just randomly meet people in D3 or recruit? Just hope the 3 people in your D3 games take the time to talk to you while franatically hacking down monsters? It just doesn't happen. Everyone is too focused on gaming while in the game. It just seems like you guys are making the EXACT SAME mistake you made with SC2 and almost flat out going out of your way to impair community building. YOU HAVE TO HAVE PUBLIC CHAT CHANNELS IN AN ONLINE GAME. It's not an option to me. I just don't see how you guys can make such a folly of a decision to not have public chat channels in an online action RPG or similar game where community is important. Please, please, for everything that is good in having a strong community, reconsider putting public chat channels back in. There's simply no other way to foster good community building. Almost nobody really friends people off of random public games because the majority won't even talk in them due to the way the combat flows. Edit: I know why you don't want them. Botters, phishers, spammers, trolls ect ect ect. I'm sorry, but you guys need to suck it up and attempt to deal with those issues. You can't hack off a guy's arm because you're out of bandaids for the papercut he got.

Say I want to play a 1v1, vs a masters player, in TvZ. You know what I have to do atm? Fucking scavenge chat channels spamming "any masters Zerg 1v1 TvZ?" and garbage like that. Sometimes, you just want to play a particular matchup for shits and giggles. Sometimes, you just want to work on a MU. But my god, it's nigh impossible to do so atm. - Chat channels (but at least we have channels...) suck. Def better than nothing, but still suck. My god, I miss the custom game system so much. I mean with the current system, if it's a public game, the game AUTOSTARTS (wtf?!), and to make it worse, the only way to quit the game is to friggin' log off and relog on! WHAT?! I want to play a 1v1 on Shakuras Plateau, well it's never giong to happen because the map isn't popular enough. But if I was able to HOST Shakuras, you bet someone would join almost immediately. So either I quit, or he quits, or the game starts and someone leaves ASAP, or it's a stupid game that ensues. /RANT Exactly. I've made this point on the popularity system before. It's rubbish because it creates a feedback loop where popular maps aren't necessarily what people want to play, but they remain popular because it's not possible to play anything else. But even, if the popularity measure highly correlates to what people want to play (which it doesn't), it would still not be as good as an open lobby system, because the lobbies that are open is exactly, by definition, what people want to play. That's precisely why they opened the lobby in the first place. The B.net 2.0 team, led by Greg Canessa, is too stupid to realize this simple line of logic.

How can people with so much power fuck up so badly? They set about creating everything from scratch and simply released the game unfinished. The idea is probably that the expansions will fund the "improvements" which most people will agree should have been included in WoL to begin with. We'll be lucky if WoL will ever see anything new with the way Blizzard is now.
