I have been making wallpapers and graphics on my stream since December (2011) and I thought it would finally be the time to make a proper discussion thread about it rather than the old blog post I made.
Requested by Kashll. I had to use the photo of NaDa with eyeshadow from GomTV since it was the only one I could find on the right angle. I think it works in the context of this image. Siege tank seemed like a fitting backdrop for NaDa
Requested by Insidia This one was a bit of trouble for some reason (I had two attempts at it) I sort of had an image in mind but it didn't completely come together since I could only find one decent res picture of Grubby (and he was wearing EG uniform so I had to retouch the shirt completely ).
Requested by Arterial I am trying to mix up the font treatment a bit now since I used the same ones quite a few times in the past. This one I did the text kind of like an old Godzilla poster.
Requested by MilAgro & Wumbo Something a bit different again, this one is more in the painterly style similar to the Boxer image I did. The bodyguards have been exaggerated in scale and look the same on purpose
Requested by MilAgro & NationInArms The stream for this one is pretty long due to all the masking required (masking hair sucks ). At the start of the stream I show where to get Korean fonts from. This was the hardest image to come up for so far, it wasn't until I decided to play off the emperor concept that it came together.
Requested by MilAgro. This one is more of a joke so I didn't put much time into it Also Homestory Cup was starting so it got cut short a bit time-wise.
I couldn't stream live this time since I didn't have the upload bandwidth available (blame Australian internet it is worse than many developing countries). Also the start of the video is a bit cut off since the first part got corrupted somehow . Anyway this one is kind of based on a photo of The Notorious BIG. I couldn't find any high-res images of July (what's with Korean press and low-res images?) so I had to do something different to make it work.

I make all requests in the order received. But I may change the order depending on whether I have an idea/inspiration for an image or not. Also please note that if you make multiple requests I may or may not do all of them. If multiple people request the same image then I may decide to bump up that requests priority.
If you have already requested an image from Insidia then I may not do the request either so please don't request the same image from Insidia and myself.
All requests will be streamed and as a general rule I try not to use any pre-made graphics at all. Mainly because I don't feel comfortable just using another artists work, but it also means I can compose the image how I want, and I learn more from the process that way. That is why if you watch the stream I render most of the 3D graphics myself (using models from the game).
Please be patient because these images do take time and involve research and brainstorming as well as the time taken to construct (which is usually around 2-4 hours). On average I make around 1-4 wallpapers per week (probably more like 1 per fortnight lately :p).
Could you make me a personalized one? I would appreciate it sincerely!!! If you can could you make it themed as Random (like the race Random, which I realize that does't exist, but I hope you get my point) with the captions ‘caroselcoco, the only caster who plays the guitar while casting!’ That would be awesome! <3
Btw, you have an incredible talent dude! Great job!

I subscribed to him. People like him deserve more subscribers than me by far!!!
I want Godzilla to fight Joesph Stalin on the Eiffel Tower, during a tsunami, or a giant turtle arm wrestling JYP in the north pole and Santa as the official judge.

I haven't done commentary yet. I want to but I have very little upload bandwidth to work with and so far the audio quality hasn't been great. I might try streaming with commentary soon... should be fun
Thanks the typo is fixed now :D

What the... Is the giant turtle supposed to be Gamera or something?
While I think these are great and I applaud all the artists out there, I wonder if it's time to consolidate all these wallpaper artists into one thread. . .
Wow, I normally hate how people do these as they just don't get the textures consistent all the way through but everything lays on top of each other perfectly in your pieces. I think my typography is on lockdown but as I've been incorporating illustration it's not quite coming together.
It'd be really cool to have something with Liquid'ret and his love for drones and macro.
Maybe something with hordes of drones and roaches and hydras and everything rushing forward and ret somewhere behind or among the units. Maybe really dark and dirty and menacing. I have to admit that I can't really find a good picture of him with a google search though. I like the determined face expression in + Show Spoiler +
, but not sure how you would fit that in, and the quality is not that high. Maybe you can find a better picture yourself. I'd like to have one standing with arms stretched out palms up as if he is summoning the units, and the units rushing past him, reaching his hip or so, and mutalisks overlords etc above that. Maybe even have all the units rushing out of the picture facing the viewer, to make it extra scary.
Some suggestions for text: Liquid'Ret - power of the swarm Liquid'Ret - king of drones Liquid'Ret - game of drones Liquid'Ret - the swarm is coming Liquid'Ret - run for the shelters Liquid'Ret - invasion Liquid'Ret - exponential growth Liquid'Ret - power in numbers Liquid'Ret - strong together Liquid'Ret - don't try to stop me! Liquid'Ret - don't stand in my way! Liquid'Ret - resistance is futile
All this only suggestions ofc, you are the artist. Thanks.
Also, I really like the ones in the OP. very neatly done. edit: specially the boxer one is great. Really sends a message. "I am better than you. I can do what I want. You don't mean anything to me." And the savior one is great as well, but to large extent thanks to that photo I think. You could put him in a bouncy-castle made of candy together with the teletubbies, and he would still look scary.

Thanks for all the great feedback so far everyone. I have updated the request list. It is getting pretty long now so the queue time is probably about 8+ weeks (so at least 8 weeks until I get to the end of the list). This isn't an issue at all though because I plan on making this a long term project I am just mentioning this so everyone has a realistic idea of how long it will take.

You can resize or change the hardness of a painting cursor by dragging in the image. As you drag, the painting cursor previews your changes. (Previews require OpenGL. See Enable OpenGL and optimize GPU settings.)
To resize a cursor, press Alt + right-click (Windows) or Control + Option (Mac OS), and drag left or right. To change hardness, drag up or down.
The current requests are good. I mainly would like some 1920x1200 wallpapers, so maybe you can design future ones in mind of that and can cut 1920x1080s out of those.
We could need a banner at Barcraft Mannheim Heidelberg... but i don't know if i should ask for that.. we are non profit or so but ye i don't know. but would be great

Thanks duder. I watched the MC one. Really cool watching the process happen and nice music to listen to. I ended up making a piece with one of the videos still going. Guess you were inspirational ^^
These are amazing! You are very talented. I would love to see a DRG wallpaper as well. If you could add my name to the list with Xx26Vanek26xX I appreciate it
TOP NOTCH work here man! I LOVE the Zealot one, that is simply my favorite one, but they are all top notch quality and amazing artworks, thanks a lot for this ! Much appreciated~ This Zealot wallpaper will be good forever :D ..... My life for aiur
Edit: Fixed the spelling of Grubby's name, thanks Ketch.
Ok the Grubby one is done for Insidia.
This one was a bit of trouble for some reason (I had two attempts at it) I sort of had an image in mind but it didn't completely come together since I could only find one decent res picture of Grubby (and he was wearing EG uniform so I had to retouch the shirt completely ).

I actually have a 1920x1200 monitor but most people don't so I design for 1080p. But it is fairly easily to convert to 1920x1200 by cutting off the sides and up-scaling slightly.
All of these are extremely well-done. I think that a Leenock one should be done, to make it original, make the background a realistic aquatic theme, I think that would be really cool! I see a lot of funny/cute ones with a cartoon octopus character used, but I really would like to see a realist approach! =]
I couldn't stream live this time since I didn't have the upload bandwidth available (blame Australian internet it is worse than many developing countries).
Developing countries have surprisingly good internet -- those Nigerian princes gots to get paid, son!
On January 20 2012 18:04 TheDraken wrote: why is mc in front of an american flag? -.-
Two reasons firstly because he is called Obamatoss and Obama is the US president. However it is mainly because I couldn't find a decent high res picture of the Korean flag at the right angle (you can see me trying on the stream) so I just went with what I had.
On January 20 2012 18:27 iGswOrd wrote: Can I make a request with a picture of my own? If so, please tell me where to contact you
PM me. I only do work for fun that I can stream publicly (otherwise you need to pay me since it would be a job) and I tend to down-prioritize personalized work (since it doesn't help the community).

Right now our internet is really bad (some people are still on dial-up). The Australian government is trying to improve this though with a fibre optic network that is currently being constructed. Hopefully politicians won't drop the ball and let it to be broken up and privatized before it is finished....
awesome work man ! i like where you take these wallpapers, especially the Boxer one.
What i would love to see would be a Boxer + Slayers Member Wallpaper in the style of the old emporer propaganda. Unfortunatly im not allowed to place a request
The Savior one is sick, I'd probably set it as my wallpaper if the picture wasn't that pixelated and the left text was more crisp.
I also particularly love the July wallpaper, looks insane. I need to start messing around in Photoshop more often for these types of things instead of focusing on Web design!
Any chance I can get my hands on those .max scenes? I have access to a small render farm and would love to play around with adding some volumetric lighting to these scenes.
I would use the NesTea wallpaper if it wasnt all white, I've always prefered dark wallpapers...like black, grey, etc. Cant u make a slight change to it?
I had to use the photo of NaDa with eyeshadow from GomTV since it was the only one I could find on the right angle. I think it works in the context of this image though. Siege tank seemed like a fitting backdrop for NaDa
Oh yeah all the videos how now been updated in the op so if you wanted to watch the Savior or Grubby videos check the op.
Next up Sen, Gordon Freeman (from HL2), and maybe a special request for viOLet
After that I'll finish the Bonjwa set and then some more of the foreign players like Huk, White-ra, Ret or Goody.

Sure send me a pm. BTW you don't really need a render farm to render low poly game models

The original is fine on my monitor. Something must have gone weird when I compressed the image and uploaded it to imgur or maybe you have a monitor which is showing up the jpeg compression in the darker areas.

I really like the backdrop and lettering.
Eye shadow is always unfortunate (damn you GomTV!) but I probably wouldn't have even noticed if you didn't mention it
Request - I'm using one of you're zealot wallpapers as a stream overlay, wanting to make a request to have a more personal overlay made for me, if possible let me know if you have some free time! Thanks!

Thanks. The NASL one was done for the backdrop contest they held a long time ago on Facebook. But nothing came of it and they just kept their old style. A bit of a shame since I thought it was better than what they were using at the time which was this (but then I would think that )

Sorry for the lack of updates this week I promised Koibu0 I would make (design/program) a Firefox and Chrome extension for his website SC2Ratings.com. See http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=212046 it should be released soon. So that took up some of the time I would otherwise have spent on the stream this week.
I got the planning/pre-prep done for Sen, Genius, Leenock, Flash, Jaedong and Goody. So look for those to come soon. I will probably try to stream every Tuesday but I am still working out a schedule.

In other news I was thinking of doing a basic skills video for Photoshop with commentary. It would focus on more advanced basic skill like how to retouch images professionally and some other techniques like local contrast etc. If anyone has any techniques/styles they want me to show or go through in more detail let me know.
Can you believe that there is not a single wallpaper out there of Stephano? Could you do one of him? I'm imagining you would include his stuffed puppy, but it would be up to you. I know the wait time is forever, but I am willing to wait.
Next up Gordon Freeman leaping into air with crowbar in hand against a Combine Elite for GigaFlop I have made a start to it but it's taking a while to get the assets together

Really impressive stuff, and an inspiration since I'm starting to learn Photoshop as a total noob. I'll tackle 3DS Max waaay down the line, maybe. I just watched your Savior video and it's awesome.
Awesome work, really enjoyed the video showing the making of the MKP image. What would you advise people to read if they're just starting out with Photoshop and want to be able to do that kind of stuff?
It would be awesome if you had idra but hes fighting with his inner demons.
Something dark and sinister. Idras real persona - on the outside a tough guy, but on inside hes a quiet nerd who moved to korea and sacrificed his social life to play sc.
Wow! I really have to commemorate you on your Photoshop skills. And as you've heard before, those are some sickass wallpapers! Really impressed.
Just one question though (as I am both jealous and curious), do you draw/paint any part of the images or do you work strictly with effects/photo manipulation? If you do paint, what part (like faces, zealot, ECT). Oh, and good luck with all your requests!
On February 14 2012 12:07 shizaep wrote: Just one question though (as I am both jealous and curious), do you draw/paint any part of the images or do you work strictly with effects/photo manipulation? If you do paint, what part (like faces, zealot, ECT). Oh, and good luck with all your requests!
You can see how I do it if you watch the stream. I used to draw a lot and I have studied painting and drawing (anatomy, perspective etc) but these days I am more interested in design and photography. With the works from the stream I build them from 3d models and photographs usually from a simple sketch to get the composition right. I sometimes paint over parts of the image if I am going for a painterly style otherwise I just build it from photos.
I think the key is no matter what I am working on I do a sketch/plan first otherwise things can quickly go downhill.
Your wallpapers are great, man. I have the Puma one set right now. I can't wait for a Bomber one in the future. If you're looking for ideas, maybe you could do him surrounded by manner mules lol
Can I ask you what your set-up is like? I'd love to be able to stream my own design work but the lag kills me. I've got a Quad-Core and 6 GB of RAM and still struggle.
Hey guys just been really busy with work this week but I will probably stream tomorrow night if I'm not too tired after work. I've been asked by Razor to do some wallpapers for them so I will be working on that.

Not sure where your bottleneck is I just get the best parts I can. Ram is cheap though and you always can do with more since Photoshop eats it fast (although once you get past 12+ GB it seems to be less of an issue). Obviously if you are upgrading go for more ram and better cpu over a new gpu.

Amazing ! o_____o I can understand how SlayerS were happy about the BoxeR one ^^. He looks so... imperial I guess. Savior looks majestic too.
Please, could you do one with Stephano with a hand raised, giving orders/pointing a direction for roaches and lings rushing forward, with a legend under his name saying "The King Of Lings" ? Much thanks, and keep it up ! I'll be sure to tune in to the stream anytime you go live.

To get the files from Starcraft 2 you will need the mpq editor linked in the Getting Ready section. First, make sure you don't have SC2 open as it won't let you access the files if it is. Now, open up the MPQ editor and click File -> Open MPQ, then navigate to your Starcraft 2 directory. There will be two directories here where your model could be located; Campaigns\Liberty.SC2Campaign or Mods\Liberty.SC2Mod. The folder it is in depends on whether your model was only used in single player or if it's a standard multiplayer unit. If you aren't sure where it is, just check one folder and if you don't see it there then try the other one. In each folder you should see a Base.SC2Assets and another one that corresponds to your language. First, open up the base.SC2Assets file (it should be the largest file). After you open the MPQ, first find the model you want by expanding the Assets folder, then the Units folder. You should be able to find the folder you want from there. Once you've navigated to your units folder, you should see a file with a m3 extension. Right click on it and click extract, then choose a location where you want to extract the file.
Now that you have the model, you will want to find the texture that goes with it. You can find all the textures in the Assets -> Textures folder inside base.SC2Assets. Open it up and search for the textures you think go with your model. You can filter through the files by using the File Mask box in the toolbar at the top. You need to use * as a wildcard, so for example, type in *zergling* to get all the textures for a zergling. Be sure you delete the mask after you find what you want or all the other folders will appear to be empty. Once you have the textures extracted, you will need to open them up with a compatible image editor (Paint.NET should work), and then re-save them as tga files.
And finally, sounds. If you want sounds for your unit there are two locations where they could be located. Firstly, for sounds other than speech, simply look in the Assets\Sounds folder in the same MPQ that you found your model. For sounds which are related to a specific language, you will need to open up the MPQ archive for that language (i.e. enUS.SC2Assets) and then look in LocalizedData\sounds. Once you find the sounds you want, just extract them like you did with the model/texture.
Don't bother re-saving them as .tga though since it is unnecessary you can just get dds plugins if you need them.
Right now things are a bit hit and miss (some models need to manually retextured or have wierd issues) but once HotS is released Blizzard are providing official 3dsMax tooling so things should be a lot better.
after i posted that question i found the .dds files and extracted them but i can't seem to make the textures work, the model will get some color but nothing like ingame or like you got when you were doing the NaDa wallpaper, i tried with banshee/marine/tank model since i was trying to do a 1/1/1 related wallpaper and i couldn't make it look anything like real unit :s i'm still trying to figure it out
So, after getting green light from nekoconeco I am posting this alternative version of the Puma wallpaper. I did this because I have a sidebar on my desktop which would cover the nice artwork there. Thus I did some editing and switching around etc... here's the result:
I was going to make a post saying the nada picture was awesome, but then, as I scrolled down, my jaw dropped further and further down. My good sir, you got some sick talent! My personal favorite must be the firebat, because i love firebats. If i can make a request, it would be ST_Bomber as a ghost with a nuke coming down. Could be really cool if you can picture it in your mind. Anyways, please keep it up!
Edit: A fruitdealer tribute would be nice too! Something with fruits, i guess
I was wondering if you could make a awesame new one for Jaedong's fanclub? He deserves alot better than what he currently has gotten. And your photoshops always amaze me!! Please Give a PM if you got the time!!

Sure sent you a PM. Check out the graphics I did for Flash's fanclub (link) for an example of the sort of thing I can do.

Nope still working on them slowly... I've just been really busy lately with work (lots of 12+ hour days ) so I haven't had as much time. Whereas earlier in the year I had a lot more time.
I also have a heap of recording on my HDD that I need to upload at some point,
This Jaedong wallpaper is so full of win, amazing work! I watched the streamwhen you made it and was sooooo excited as soon as I saw this awesome purple background until you changed it to green. (( Any chance to get it in purple too? <3
Jaedong and Flash wallpapers are amazing! Hope you keep doing wallpapers of BW players. Is it time for Bisu now? Or maybe EffOrt, please? Anyways thanks so much for making these!
Can I request some more of Flash? (wearing a suit this time :O) like a godfather type theme? maybe with action/stats acting as minions/mobsters or smth?
Dropping by to say that I love your photo-manipulation man. Keep up the good work. If you need more views on your site, fb and whatnot just throw some links so that I can subscribe.

Thanks guys! I know the thread hasn't been updated in a while.
I wanted to wait and see how things go with HOTS and the Kespa migration. Also I'm looking forward to using those new HOTS art tools once they are released
