FYI, most Koreans are not that upset about this. just "disappointed".
(I was disappointed too, but I hope to see him in code s)
Only excessively mad people make uproar.
stuffs like 'ban Naniwa from GSL' is minor minor opinion
I prefer watching.

Don't blame him - In professional base ball they will walk amazing batters *ichiro* Before letting them hit. Massive let down for the fans but it happens anyways. Handegg teams will end games just straight up early, epriving* fans of their game - esp when teams are more than capable of making the last minute of a game last F O R E V E R.

And that's massive amounts of sponsorship money - player money - ad money gone. Huge implications for the teams and their supporters.

And you know what? It's accepted.

No one wants to see two dead men walking slap each other around for 15 minutes before a random retarded loss. I feel bad for naniwa going 0-2 and honestly. I'd be crushed if I were him.

Good luck man. <3

What the hell is with everyone coming up with these terrible sports metaphors that have no relevance to what happened with naniwa.

They walk amazing batters strategically because if they let them hit and they get a home run the team has a greater chance of losing then letting him walk a base. There is strategy behind that. There is no strategy to sending out 7 probes and taking your hands off the keyboard.

"Koreans need to stop making such a big deal.."

I'd love to hear GOM's response.

I think you are referring to games where teams are eliminated from playoff contention (NBA, NFL, etc.). I'd have to disagree with you because in those cases the results of the games affect other teams (playoff positioning, draft positioning, etc.) while in this case the game was 100% meaningless and had no effect on other players.

With a guaranteed prize of $840 already in his pocket when he faced Nestea I was rather expecting some value for money.

Wearing your heart on your sleeve is one thing, but it is disrespectiful in the extreme to all those who watch and enjoy starcraft as a game not to provide said game.

I watched Naniwa fail to gg in his GSL match out of frustration previously, and, while we expect him to be a prodigious talent, he has yet to build a legacy that is capable of overshadowing his current character issues.

What Would White-Ra Do?

To the comment above, Mr.Chae does not seem to be at all affected by this. In fact, he is already very excited about tomorrow's matches!

Personally, I don't really care what he did it but I can see it being a problem for many. There are some rules of courtesy in professional sports. For example, in basketball, even if both teams are at the bottom of the league and they play each other, they still play their games and not go for like half court shots or something ridiculous. Spectator sports have to worry about who's watching and do what's professional. They could pretty much just not even show up since there's no consequence for their season's outcome but they would get fined and it would be deemed unprofessional.

What's different in Korea is that I think they take professional gaming in higher regards than the western world; somewhat like how the western world see regular sports. Their mentality is that they will try to win and show good games.

Has he refused to play consolation or 3rd place matches previously? If Naniwa is always about winning why has this not come up before? If not he just lost his temper AGAIN and then came up with some bullshit reason afterwards.

Complain about the format afterwards don't rob the fans of the chance to watch you again.

Honeslty as a huge Nani fan the last thing i want to see is him half ass 4 gate or proxy 2 gate a game and waste time out of everyones day in a game with nothing on the line. He didn't rob me of anything, in fact i got a good chuckle out of the whole situation

Then don't do some stupid strat and play one more game. How often do we get to see players like Naniwa and Nestea play? I don't care what is on the line because they have the talent to still make it incredibly entertaining. People payed to watch this tournament and he just wasted my money, that is worse than my time.

The part where you are wrong is that there was something on the line, public opinion. You think this would be happening if he played a real game and said afterwards that the game didn't matter?

Just to add something to discussion, think about it.

Do we know why young kids start to play starcraft or starcraft 2 after seeing SlayerS`BoxeR, Jaedong, Flash playing, and look up to them?
Do we know why even the veterans of starcraft are trying to be like Slayers`BoxeR or White-Ra?
Do we know why even now, some of iconic player who are not getting the best results and even getting worst results are respected most?
Do we know why White-Ra can alone get a sponsor without needing a team?

- Is it because they threw games, get aggresive all the time in tournaments or insult others (not meaning naniwa here, just trying to make a contrast for my point) or

is it because they have this amazing grasp of professionalism?
is it because they ignore their bad feelings during a performance and try best, even if it's an unnecessary match (BoxeR is one the best example for trying hard until the end)
is it because they respect their work, their friends, their opponents and respect the "idea of respectful competetion"?

Now, you can ask yourself, Do I want to be respected by the whole community like White-Ra or Boxer, Do I want to be looked up to regarding manners?

or Don't I?...

It's free to choose of course...

But you should know that these names are there because, they added something from themselves whereever they've been to.

-Hey Yo-Hwan Lim!, You need to play this unnecessary match sorry for this but this is the format of this tournament.
-Hey it's no problem, I got beaten very hard by X, Y, Z, but whatever I will still deliver and fight for my fans, also because this is my job.

The guy above get's respect, and gets recognized by sponsors, teams, tournament organizers because of his professionalism.
The guy above will be loved by his fans.
The guy above won't cause terrible discussions on teamliquid.

The guy above knows what professionalism means.

I'm guessing that GOM won't explicitly do anything about this, but considering the negativity from korean fans, I think any Korean tournaments would consider twice before inviting Naniwa.

In professional chess the players can always agree to reach a draw before the game if they don't feel like playing.
I don't see a huge difference between giving up a game of starcraft and pre-agreeing draws in chess.
They are both justified when nothing is on the line.

If you are 'on tilt' in team sports you always have the team to cheer you up and a longer time between games.
Therefore, the situation is more analogous to chess than to soccer.

No possibility for advancement. No net effect on group rankings. Same prize payout for both players, regardless of the match outcome. NaNiwa, objectively, caused no problems.

I watched this on the Twitch.tv free stream, so I don't feel cheated out of my money's worth.

Part of being a professional in any competitive sport is giving your best effort (or at least pretending to) in every situation. You are getting paid to play the game so play it. It's a slap in the face to do what naniwa did. Even if there was nothing on the line, every game played is a chance to improve, especially against someone as good as NesTea. It's not every day you get a chance to play him in a tournament, regardless of the stakes.

Naniwa is doing a real good job of making people hate him.

I dont understand how people doesnt see it as a big deal when it is a professional competition. People want esports to be taken seriously? then act like it's a professional sport. Someone came up with a stupid argument about it being the same thing as Barcelona putting their B squad to face Levante. No, that's not like that at all. It would be the similar if Barcelona started a match and told 4 of their players to get a red card by cursing the referee, thus playing 7 vs 11 and losing 0-6.

In other sports such as tennis you might get suspended for lack of effort. Some universal regulation should be created by the biggest tournaments in order to prevent such an stupid thing - and other stuff like match fixing - from happening in the future.

thing is, shows like gsl deliver top notch games most of the time, thats what people pay for ! blizzard cup brings all the champs into a last tournament of the year and then you get to see this. i will still buy GSL tickets but i cant take naniwa serious anymore. the other games were great he really showed that he is a great player. but thats a question of honor to play vs nestea.

after beating him 2 times .. come on people were pumped for this even before the whole cast started that day .. its just dissapointing when you stay up for this or sneak a stream in at work because you are a fan.
