I haven't seen anyone address this specific issue yet, so I feel that this is worth asking. Is it possible to types in two different languages using the sc2 client? I am wanting to switch between two input methods (English and Japanese) while staying within the game client but I have found that this is impossible as it seems that blizzard stops non English text from being entered directly if you have an English version.
The only work around I have been able to find is to type in notepad and copy paste, but this is not very practical.
I realize that Japanese is not a supported language by blizzard, but this is more of a general question. For other supported languages, Korean etc., is it possible to type in both Korean and English on the same account?
tl;dr is it possible to type in two languages on an NA account?
|
you should be able to type if you have a keyboard with multiple inputs. I regularly type in korean on the english servers....
|
I type in Korea all the time in NA account on NA ladder...
(Not that i actually know what i'm typing, it's a mind game ;D)
|
yes of course, I don't know how much it even has to do with the sc2 client. probably whatever your keyboard input is is more important.
|
cant you just switch the language in control panel? i have it setup through change keyboards and other input devices to change language when i press alt+shift
ㅅ.ㅅ
|
control panel > change keyboards or other input > change to korean. i believe you need unicode in korean, i could be wrong, but then once you do that i believe while in-game when you hit enter to chat you can hit tab or some key to change. i could be wrong, but i've seen koreans type in both english and korean in-game.

You can do as many as you have on your comp. Just can't do Japanese if you aren't actually in a game (aka can't type japanese in chat channels).
|
my input randomly changes to chinese. anyone know how to switch it back to english in game? i always have to restart sc2...
|
Alt+Shift changes the language for me. I can type in English and Serbian Cirillic and switch between the two (alt+shift) at any point in any program/game.
|
I've had my language randomly change to Japanese a couple of times while I was alt-tabbing. Then I was typing in kana. /redundancy
Dunno how I did it.. is it alt+shift?

it is alt-shift indeed to be more clear: it's holding alt then pressing shift multiple times to switch through your installed languages
|
I've typed in Japanese, Korean, English and French in sc2 (i.e. all the inputs work). As people have said, you have to alt shift to cycle between your different language inputs. Once in Japanese mode, the far right side of your chat box should say 日本。。. In order to type in Japanese, you might have to hit alt and the tilda ( ` or ~ ) key once you're in Japanese mode and then you'll be able to hiragana it up as per usual.
edit:....this is of course assuming that you're using windows

Thanks everyone for the replies!

Ah, I didn't know it was possible to type in-game. I tried it in private message but when I saw that fail I just assumed it was the same. Not really sure what blizzard hopes to accomplish though by restricting multi-language typing to in-game only though.

If your default input is on the Japanese keyboard, you probably accidentally hit alt tilda given that it's right next to tab. If not, you would have had to alt shift and then alt tilda toJapanese it up, or if you were writing in hiragana last time you used it, it should default back to that. Alt tilda will chuck it back to English typing, but it will remain in the Japanese input.

Everything works now other than in chat channels, which I assume is what Blizzard intended. If anyone knows a way to bypass this and type in private/team chat channels I'd be interested in hearing.

How to type in Japanese/Korean/basically any language in sc2: So this is probably how you'll start out in a channel:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/Jpu3B.jpg)
And you'll usually just type in English:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/MR00o.jpg)
If you think you are in Korean mode (your mode is shown just to the left of your system tray in the taskbar), you can just hit your "right alt" key to go Korean:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/zERJ8.jpg)
It's set up well for Korean because the little A changes to 가, showing that your input has changed. It isn't so good with Japanese.
If you want to type Japanese, and if you are not sure what mode you're in, you may have to "alt shift" (preferably use the left alt key in case you have Korean input enabled) toggle your way to Japanese (again, represented in the bottom right of your taskbar). As you probably know, in Japanese mode, you can type in both English and Japanese, e.g. right now I'm in Japanese mode:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/MR00o.jpg)
butttt, in order to toggle between actually typing Japanese, you have to hit alt tilda (the ` or ~ key)
![[image loading]](http://www.geniusdv.com/weblog/archives/alt%20key.gif) +
![[image loading]](http://ezylearn.com.au/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Tilde-Key.jpg) And then you can go at it, hitting space to convert to kanji as per usual:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/WqxUA.jpg)
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/gqkjO.jpg)
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/y17ME.jpg)
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/ntzQ2.jpg)
Notice anything? The little A didn't change like it did for Korean, so you just have to be aware of your current input or simply alt tab or hit start to check the task bar to see what mode you're in.
The in-game chat functions exactly the same:

Your modes for windows (yes, this is xp, but it'll look exactly the same in windows 7, w/e): Korean mode typing in English:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/la2HJ.png) Korean mode typing in Hangeul:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/72gFR.png) Japanese mode typing in English:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/8YYty.png) Japanese mode typing in Hiragana:

Sorry, I just have to double post to bump this so the people who wanted it can see it (I wrote the guide in an edit).
|
Thank you for the guide Suc! I wasn't expecting such a detailed explanation and you have answered my questions completely. But I seem to get stuck though at the alt shift part. Alt shift works normally for me when I am on the desktop and while typing in a game, but whenever alt shift in a chat channel and try typing in Japanese I can't input anything, it just doesn't recognize the keyboard or something. I guess this is more of a tech support question now.
|
My keyboard stays in Korean mode typing in English when I alt+shift in SC2. Can anyone help, please? (When I alt+tab back to windows it goes back to KR typing in Hangul)
EDIT: Nevermind, I just had to restart my SC2 client to have the A button in my chatbox. Many thanks for the guide!
