I drove for 2 hours to the event just to see the finals and semi finals. I arrived right after the first semi, just in time for LoL
and it STILL didn't bother me. I can't believe how harshly people are reacting to this... the only response I can think of is 'grow up'.
so, grow up. there's plenty of good reasons to do what they did, although those reasons wouldn't be apparented to people so closed minded as to rate IPL lower just for showing LoL.
I was backstage (had a staff pass) and I saw a schedule that said the closing ceremony was meant to start at 11:00, and WOW did they come close, considering you can't predict the length of a starcraft series. they cut away from LoL when they needed to to stick to what they said they would do... how would you feel if you got home late and found out you missed everything because they changed the scheduling?
|
Things to do better: 1) next time let a professional do the winner/next match graphics 2) who had the idea for the horrible explosion thingy when switching cameras 3) sound to low 4) be more subtle with advertising sponsors (except for that eye stuff) that "supporting ESPORTS" phrase is getting on my nerves (5) finals finishing at 5am (thank god for no tvt finals :D) )
but since this are only miner complaints you can see that I really liked it overall
PS. way better than mlg streams
|
The Good:
-Great venue -Great booths -Great players -Free HD -Live on Three -IGN Prime was worth it thanks to Lani -Anna did a great job of interviewing, shedding some light on the unknown players.
The Bad:
-Championship Bracket only had one stream after the Open Bracket ended. -PainUser+HD could use more professional delivery live. Let DJWheat teach them. -Switching to LoL on the SC2 stream was a terrible idea. -Format wasn't very good, 1000$ is nice but more incentive is better. -Downtime issues on the main stream.
Suggestions:
-Perhaps schedule in a less eSports busy month next time? The fixed crowd seating combined with the ho-hum crowd showing made things look bad. -If a series ended quickly, that means build order wins. Perhaps use the time after the series ended to analyze the builds live. -Consider using recorded Prime content on the main stream during downtime. -Try to hype up the players more before before important matches. Something to get the crowd going.

I fully agree that the response to the LoL finals was terrible and one to be ashamed off. Having said that I can sort of understand the reaction from the European viewers as because of the LoL series the later SC2 matches were at ridiculous-o-clock instead of early in the night. Having said that the response to it was still disgracefull and shouldn't happen.

ad 3) Maybe turn down the volume of your speakers. ad 4) well, you would not have had a free stream to watch if it wasn't for that. or even no tournament. I think it was ok, and I usually avoid adverts whenever I can.

Also the information politic during day 2 was great compared to other events.
As I feel such threads should help you guys to even further improve for the next event, I think there are two things you could improve on / handle better next time.
1. Casters: I really liked the dApollo/DJWheat-Combo, but the other two were quite inferior in comparison. Just look at dApollo, he plays Sc2 at a high level plus (and this is the important part I guess) he really puts effort into this and tries to inform himself abput every player that's in the tournament beforehand. It's just unprofessional if for example Doa admits he doesn't know much about Stephano when there was so much hype for him coming into this event. Also the obsing on some of the matches was pretty bad, missing many drops and sometimes even major battles. I do understand that casting+obsing at the same time can be hard, but if they can't handle it, just use another person that only focuses on obsing like GSL does.
2. LoL killing esports. RIOT is a main sponsor of IPL so I can understand the reasoning in the first place, but I really think you didn't think about how disappointing this would be for all your EU fans. The argument that the viewers should watch LoL to support esports is frankly just stupid. They don't pause the superbowl 2 minutes before the end and show a whole game of soccer in order to make soccer more popular in the US either (support sports!!). I was really disappointed last night and reading the LR-thread many people felt the same way. Why do you specify EU fans? That seems silly to me. Doa spends his time casting the GSL. He spends his time researching their builds, their players, and sees the interactions they have with foreign tournaments. He came over here with a good knowledge of builds and low player knowledge. The 2nd one can be learned very fast as he casts. Tastosis doesn't know all the players they cast in MLG everytime. Would you make this same comment for them?
Actually I'm quite annoyed with especially Tasteless casting in that regard from time to time. One GSTL match for example comes to my mind where the only MVP player he seemed to know was DRG. That's just not very professional, but I love Tasteless so he has a great bonus I guess

Think about this a bit better. It was 2 am for me as 2nd semis finished, and I'm in 'late timezone' EU, there are people, for a large part of EU it was 3 and even 4 am, so naturally a lot of people are upset that they wasted whole 2 hours and made them miss the finals(and im sure a lot of people from east EU missed even the 2nd semis). You say other people are close minded, but you really don't seem to have thought it through, why we're annoyed.

-No semi finals and final for euro. -Weird FX

I didn't vote because I didn't get to watch IPL all that much. I'll try to catch up on the Vods if they are free.
But from what I've seen the production was just unreal and I felt there was a good mix of koreans and foreigners too.
As from LoL I don't see why people complain.. I mean I think LoL is as retarded of a game as it gets and it's terrible to watch, but it just wouldnt make sense not show the final on the main stage. They have another game that has a pretty big community and they want to showcase it and try to get more viewers.
Like it or hate it, it would have been dumb by IPL not to show LoL.
And if anyone missed the finals cause of LoL you only have yourself to blame. It's on the scheudle learn to read.

I hope next time pool play will work something like the winners of the pools, and I mean best record and if there are mirror records a Bo1-3 to see who is really the top dog, get to play each other in Bo1-3's to see who gets the best record over all. Then the top four of the pools get to CHOOSE who they will play the next round. I know it seems tedious and crazy... but seeing completely meaningless pools that accidentally screw everyone over is kinda pathetic and what was the WORST part of IPL3... I mean seriously... the fact that Inori got to the semis Hongun prime style was mega disappointing... PLUS it makes pool play something to be in AWE of instead of a random content splattering...

I have two things I'd like to see improved for the next IPL. First off, the graphics overlays, now this seems like a small thing but it ruined an otherwise very professional setup. The screens that came on before and after each map started were (IMO) incredibly ugly. Think about how Dreamhack looked.
Second, get more people so watch the event live. Seeing the crowd when the finals were played was disheartening. When you have such a great event, make sure to host it in a place where as many as possible can come watch the games.
Other than that and some obvious technical difficulties, I very much enjoyed it! Awesome to see you do so well on your first try, looking forward to the next one!

The main stream was showing SC2 for 4 days straight, you honestly think that switching to LoL at the last minute is a good idea? I love LoL, I watched both streams at the same time, but it's not a good idea to force it on the SC2 crowd.

Because for us it was really really early in the morning due to the LoL thing (4 -5 am)...and if you for example payed for the Prime-pass it was annoying...

Obviously it has to do with the fact that he stepped in for Total Biscuit, as far as I know. But it of course annoys me, when the Casters dont know about the Players. Part of their Job in my Opinion...
My two Cents:
- appreciated the Stream-Quality, and for two friends of mine I can say they appreciated the free stream very very much!
- the flow of the games. not to much downtime...that is just amazing and should me mentioned more often
- the effort to stay in contact with fans and viewers and let the informations run in the right directions, especially on Day 2!
- Casterduos I liked most: Wheat and Apollo.

7/10 - A good tournament but still a long way from being perfect.
The streams were really good. High quality and the option of FPView. On the other hand - it's only really the view "Here just stick an obs on the player". It would be better if we can see the mousemovement. Since it's LAN it's possible.
Casters overall are a personal opinion, so I dont really care about that. But dont let the casters observe. Some of them were overwhelmed, missing engagements, missing drops and overall bad camera work. I dont blame the casters for that, just use a dedicated observer next time.
The interviews between games during in downtime were a good idea. The implementation was bad. I dont want to hear an interview with Sheth. If that interview is 10 weeks old ("You just joined TL 2 days ago"). I dont mind prerecorded stuff (the Gordon stuff i.e. isnt time critical), but 10 weeks is stretching it way too far.
SC2 Semi1. Big break (Panel, LoL), SC2 Semi2. SC2 Final. At least do Semi1 - Semi 2 and then the big break. Also, EU QQ: I went to bed afteer Semi1 (was ~0:00), because I knew I wouldnt be able to stay up for such a delayed Semi2 & Final. So at least give me the 2nd Semi next time please
Groupplay: It has no meaning. Look at Idra. "Well, I just forfeit". What happens next time if more people just forfeit their games? At least implement penalties (i.e. $$$ fines) if a player forfeits a game. (I realize the huge delay so Idra was very tired, but it's still not an option to just forfeit based on player decision. Talk to the affected players if something like BO1 is an option. Or cointosses.)

According to schedule: Semifinal1 11pm. LoL final 12am. Semifinal2 2:30am Grandfinal 4am
Add +1 if you're looking at eastern EU (Ukraine & co)
Remember on a Sunday ->Monday night. If they cut the LoL final the grand final would've started at 1:30am which might be ok with a 4hour sleep night. I do assume they lost a lot of EU viewers because of it.

10/10 for a first-time effort, 9/10 overall. The bar has been raised, congrats gentlemen.
Pros: + The best production outside of Korea (and even better in some ways). Excellent camera angles, lighting, quality. + Glitzy venue which oozed style and glamour. + Very professional cast, both on the scenes and behind the scenes. + Casting is always a very contentious and subjective topic, mainly because most people are conditioned to day9/Tastosis after so long, but for my money I thought it was excellent with nary a misstep. A fine blend of chemistry and excitement among all the duos involved. + Exceptional scheduling. This can't be emphasized enough, but there was barely any downtime between games, and when there was, it was fleshed out with entertaining filler, whether it was interviews or top 10s. Even with the unfortunate technical delays, IPL managed to keep games from grossly running over schedule (by cutting out post-game interviews, etc.). + Superior streams, in both quality and quantity. A shame that the aforementioned difficulties waylaid some of them, but streams 5 and 6 (and Lani/Megumi particularly) stand out for the outstanding behind-the-scenes content. + Ambition and professionalism. It really seemed, from start to finish, like IPL was determined to host a first-class, impeccable event which will catapault esports' popularity. + The impromptu panel with Incontrol, Select, MC, Stephano. Highly entertaining and well-hosted; I couldn't believe it wasn't planned. Props especially to Rachel and Geoff for their fine work on the spot. I can only wish that there are more of these in the future; the reception to such panels on the main stream was highly enthusiastic.
Possible improvements: - This should probably be apparent by now, but limiting the audience to a 21-and-over crowd probably does no favors for the live audience size. It seems this will be resolved when the venue moves to Vegas. - The League of Legends finals intermission seemed a little suspect, particularly because a) it interrupted the semifinals; and b) many of the SC2 audience doesn't necessarily share its interest with LoL as well. - Some sound issues, usually after games. The most common issue was to have the "epic music" track play loudly over the post-game interviews, making quite a few of them completely inaudible. - Some minor camera zoom issues. For the most part, the camera work and player cams were superb, but occasionally they zoomed too far, far in (pimples anyone?) or lingered far too long (poor Ryung). - I'm probably in the minority on this one, but I didn't feel the necessity to overdress all the female cast, particularly the behind-the-scenes interviewers. Perhaps it was to suit the casino setting? Perhaps it was to blatantly sell the attractiveness of the females involved? Perhaps I'm missing the point altogether? but I felt the juxtaposition of women in slinky cocktail dresses sitting next to teenage gamers in t-shirts and jeans was a bit awkward. I don't expect sideline reporters to interview NBA/NFL players in cocktail dresses; nor do I expect the same from esports. - More impromptu content, whether it's the panels with Incontrol and friends or for-fun showmatches or team games or custom maps between casters or eliminated players who are willing to participate during the downtimes. I believe that there is actually a ton of interest in the community in watching this sort of content, as long as it involves their favorite personalities, so it would be a great way to kill time.

If you're ever going to bring someone on stage to joke about SC2, make sure its someone that knows SC2.
That fucking comedian was so annoying.
And I get it that some comedians get laughs by picking on the audience, but the way this guy was doing it just made him that much more grating.
