EDIT: Thanks for the spotlight, TL! E-stalking in ESPORTS is now officially condoned

The Starcraft 2 forums are very busy places, and there are great posts from experienced pros that get too easily buried and ignored/forgotten. I've decided to start collecting all the pro posts I come across and showcase them in a single thread once a week.

I don't post everything they say; I try to stick with the most interesting things that are still related to SC2. If there's something great a pro has said that you think should be part of this thread, PM me or post it here and I'll try to add it to the OP.

Again, please note that this isn't for the purpose of arguing with pros or stirring up controversy. This whole idea comes from wanting to know people with better perspectives have to say. I want to draw attention to their posts so we can give their opinions more respect, not less.

It's a sad day for protoss. Today naniwa showed how to play protoss in a perfect way with solid builds. Killing 12 queens, 20 overlords with 4 fenix and 1 voidray just to die 2 minutes later. How is it possible blizzard? How did the game turn out this way?

Second game it was over when naniwa didn't spot the mutas but in some amazing way he held it off. Playing the best starcraft I have ever seen he even got his forth up. Best control that has ever been showed was used to force the first attack back. He crushed it. Second attack was just too much, blizzard had taken another victim. It is time you guys open your eyes and listen to players. I have spent one and a half month here now and many of the top players fistpump when they see they play a toss at the ladder. Just because the game seems balanced in rest of the world it is far from the truth. You could probably send any top200 player here to europe and he would consistantly win weeklys. Korea is the only place you can consider when balancing the game if you want it to be balanced on the highest level.

Good job patching the game. But patching was the only thing you did good since all the changes was bad and wrong. You guys solved brood war, you solved wc3, you can solve sc2 aswell. The NP change was the worst ever. Now you remove even more micro from the game. It was a skill to lift/target infestors with colo and it was a skill to be able to NP without dying. Now range is shorter so it will be more luck for the spell to use. The right change who everyone says is to make units move when fungled with a reduced movement speed. Damage wasn't the problem before and it wont be now aswell. In my honest opinion have a emergancy meeting asap and have the top players in korea give them their opinion on the game. You will see how far away you are from what should have been done. The truth is out there!

Would also be nice to get a point of view from blizzard how they think toss should play in certain matchups because obviously none of us can do it. They must have some ideas they don't share with us since they keep making the game worse and worse for us. One base mother ship hello?

Why do so many people say APM doesn't matter? Name me one elite korean player that has a sub 200 APM. APM isn't the end all be all of SC2 but you will NEVER see a player winning GSL with a 100-150 APM.

I believe FD has ~150 APMs when he versus BoxeR at Blizzcon last year. It does matter a lot, but not spamming and proud of it, 400 APMs like Merz doesn't mean anything. I could spam 500 APMs all game long without building anything right?

-_- I've never claimed im proud of it. There's more to speed/multitasking than raw APM. It's just how I play. Whoever claims me > sjow is stupid anyways and I've honestly never seen anyone make that claim as of yet. So tired of getting bullshit for my APM when I've never once bragged/claimed it's good. I welcome this patch with open arms, hopefully it'll reduce the amounts of posts like these.

EDIT: Also because you are faster than your opponent doesn't necessarily mean you're better than him. You can be faster than your opponent and still lose, as long as his decision making and game sense is better, speed is not that important (as long as you don't sit around at like 10 apm) When speed really matters is when both players are of equal skill when it comes to decisionmaking/gamesense. Because then you need other variables to seperate them.

I'd consider this a smart move if that's how it went down.

Except you can't "sign" (a contract) with a team and then just take a better offer. This is what contracts are for. Following these developments with great interest.

Legally speaking I don't think if Complexity retains his contract that he can play anywhere not under them until this is sorted...or else comlpexity could legally sue him for any penny he earns playing for mellinium.

They wouldn't do either if they have any sense left in them. It certainly wouldn't help their image and popularity to hold a talented 18-year old player against his will, let alone sue him.

If he doesn't want to play for them, he doesn't want to play and that's that.

No that's not that. If he doesn't want to play for them he shouldn't have signed a contract to begin with. I'm 100% on coLs side on this one. If you ever want e-sport taken seriously, shit like this can't be allowed. There's no freaking point of having contracts to begin with if we allow things like this to happen.

I don't see what could be disorienting about signing a contract with a pro team. They offer X, you accept X, sign on the dotted line. If Stephano did not read the terms correctly or changed his mind later, that is totally his fault for signing a legally binding contract. This whole situation makes him look terribly immature.

On the other hand, does Complexity really want to fight to keep Stephano around at this point? He clearly will not be happy with the team after requesting takebacksies, and what's the point of "owning" a player that doesn't even want to be a part of your organization?

Just a sad day for everyone involved.

This is kinda the dilemma with e-sports now though. I can only think of rare occassions, if any, where it'd actually be worth sueing a player for an e-sport organsiation. But on the other hand, if you never set down the foot and show the community that this is not tolerated, what stops contracts from being utterly pointless from the beginning? In the end you're left with teams who can't be sure they have their players left next week, which is going to do nothing but kill one team after another.

Point being, teams need to make a stand and can't let stuff like this slip away IMO. As long as it's not too costly I'd love to see legal action being taken, or at least attempted. Might even consider taking legal action even if it hurts economically or eventually more players might feel inclined to just spit on their current contracts and just go to whoever bids the highest this week.

Care to elaborate on that?
I'm no TvT fanatic but I would think that this would fix the ridiculously stupid (imo) hellion drops that have basically 2 outcomes:

Win the game/SEVERELY cripple opponent
OR
Lose 400 Minerals (and maybe 100/100 of a medivac)

Can't see why this wasn't a good change but I'm interested to see your input o.o

Pretty likely its gonna turn TvT into a bio matchup again, if it does I will quit TvT asaply.

Hellions were not overpowered TvT at all, making non-combat shield marines take 3 hits before they die is a joke =[ If it stays mech I dont care so much about the change but Im not sure it will.

Plenty of other pro terrans disagree with you though, Merz, Demuslim, and Kawaiirice to name a few. Outplaying your opponent for the majority of the game and then losing it because you didn't notice the drop in your main is ridiculous..sometimes you could even see them being dropped at the edge of your base but hellions are too fast and were too powerful for pulling scvs to make a difference.

I respect your opinion, but in my opinion watching marine tank vs marine tank is way more fun than this mass hellion/air wars crap...

They are all bio whores. Bio is even gayer anyway, 'oh no I didn't see the 5 dropships coming for my main, I guess I will have to base race or write GG now'.

Fucking stupid.

I was thinking it was going to turn into more tank/marine, but I'm certainly no good at this game. I think certain maps will favor bio heavily against mech, where mech or tank marine will be viable on others. Only time will tell I guess

Marine-tank is bio to me =[

i agree that pure bio is not fun whatsoever, marine+tank is decent but mech is the most fun. i still think mech will prevail over bio dont you? its not like mass marine will beat mech and we've seen pure MMM can beat mech (ie. polt). mass tank will still rape bio i hope. mech ftw!

edit: it was pretty hard to beat good mech player with pure MMM and with marine+tank it was almost impossible to beat pure mech so it's gonna be bit "easier"

"Bio whores" :< I just find Biomech a lot more fun and intense to play, it also rewards mechanics more imo and that plays to my strenghts. BFH was fucking ridiculous and I'm so glad they are nerfing it, they were simple too cost effective and I don't know how anyone could deny that.

Mech play rewards players with good decision making/patience/game sense though so I guess it's all about how you like to play the game, what I didn't like was that bio became such a bad option in the end. Bio to me is also including tanks, pure bio was never really in my taste either. At least bio feels like a more valid option to mech now which is great, I think the mech-oriented play in TvT made it a lot more about coinflipping the right BO and whoever could do the most damage with his hellions won.

But with a new patch and new possibilitys and especially with many other protoss players here to talk to about the game im sure my motivation will rise through the roof. I am much better now than when i placed high in homestory cup etc, I just need to play alot more and adjust perfectly to their style here to be more consistent and win more games, Also balance affects quite a lot atm i think we can clearly say that protoss is by far the worst race at the moment.

Not taking any side here, but I think backing off from a contract within 14 days even without explanation is valid and even if it would not be the case, the best thing coL could probably do is just accept the wishes of Stephano and let him stay at Millenium because the last thing you want is 'forcing' a player to your team if he doesn't actually want it.

I could understand that they want him to keep his word and stay to what he signed, but in my opinion it would be better to accept that he changed his mind and let him stay at M.

However it goes, glhf. Both teams are great.

I sincerely doubt Complexity has any intention of forcing a player to play for them. They certainly didn't force Destiny to.

Legal action on their part will probably seek some form of compensation for a broken contract with complexity. And they should be justified in seeking it if Stephano/Mill are in fact breaking a contract with them (which appears to be the case).

I didn't say they will, I said they shouldn't ;-)! I was not saying they are planning to. In my opinion they should not take any action at all as a gesture of goodwill. Kind of like Sony repairing your TV if it breaks 1 day after the warranty expires etc. :-)

Why the hell would they not pursue some sort of compensation? You got your analogy all wrong. In this case, complexity is the customer, and Sony stole back a TV after it was already bought. "Goodwill" doesn't apply to this situation.

The money they can get out of this does stand in no relation to the effort and trouble they would have to go through, because I'm pretty sure if they want to have money from Millenium they would need to go and take this to court... which is way too much of a hassle to even start it.

Also, it would probably cost them more than get them something :o

That's definitely true. If they go to court, however, it's not the desire for money that's doing it. It's the desire to keep other teams/players from doing this to them constantly. And frankly, even the fact that they force Stephano/Millenium to spend money/time defending themselves in court accomplishes that goal, win or lose the case itself.

I get what you are saying. I think both coL and Mil want eSports to rise so I'm not sure what exactly the right action is. Make eSports more serious, more professional and takes it to the court OR just quit it and don't waste eSports money on something like that.

I will quit the discussion here as it will not lead to anything. We both understand each others point of view, but I think we might have different opinions about it^^!

Since he's provided subtly biased account of events A, I will provide subtly biased account of events B:

1 Base Zealot/Stalker/Immortal was mismicroed against 3 Rax Fact

How can I be biased towards Protoss? I am Terran.

And what happened was Marine/Tank rolled 3 Gate Robo and for me thats perfectly fine. Marines are high DPS, low HP units that need to get countered by splash damage.
If its through own tanks (aka enough zealots and good force fields so Terran has actually to focus fire with tanks) or with colossus OR overwhelming forces. Huk had neither and made mistakes so he lost the game.

:/ Really people should start thinking before posting.

Well your analysis is slightly incorrect, there was never a big enough window of time during the game where he could get out colossi safely, not even after he defended the first all-in...Even if he did another build it still wouldn't be possible vs these typ of all-ins.

I didn't say he needed a Colossus that game, I did name the counters to many marines. He didn't bring any of them or didn't control well enough, so he lost. Not saying its not easy to execute and strong for Terran, but calling it imbalanced or completely unbeatable is untrue.

That asd guy even though playing against not the best Zerg (no offence to Zenio) is really good. Strong macro, continues to expand, good drops etc.

Something doesn't have to be 'completely unbeatable' to be imbalanced. If it is far easier to execute than to defend that in itself is a problem. VR all-ins were never completely unbeatable either yet they were nerfed.

But yeah, even if there no were no toss left in code S or A people like you would still be claiming there's no problem.

I strongly disagree. In Broodwar there was Protoss Bulldog against Terran fast expansion. It was 3 gates + a robotics for shuttle to drop zealots on the high ground. It was INSANELY hard to defend and very basic to execute for a good player.

Ofcourse I agree with you, that the 1-1-1 or any variation of the build is 'easy' but not as easy to execute as a lot of people might think. Ofcourse its still easier than the defence (far easier I'd even say).

The thing is, that there is NOTHING TO NERF. Marines are not overpowered in itself, neither are tanks, medivacs or banshees. The combination of all those things make it very hard for Protoss. Barracks build time got nerfed and immortal range got buffed, I think this will lead to a more solid defence which could help out a lot, we will see.

But "people like me" would still play and work on the game instead of wasting time complaining.

ZvP from the statistics looks much more broken than PvT with Zerg winning 59% while Terran 'only' wins 53%. Those 53% are within the variation of winning percentages that Blizzard accepts so for them there's no nerf needed.

Actually I don't know where or when, but I think Blizzard made a statement that as long as a match up is within 50-54 or 55% winrate they won't change it as it is totally possible and reasonable that the match up is not 50/50.

I agree that some adjustments have to be made (I don't know if the immortal change will be 'enough' to beat 1-1-1) but you have to be careful about it. TvZ looks very good right now and I think the game is on the right way.
We still have to keep in mind that the games changes monthly or weekly with builds and strategies, but as long as a 1-1-1 allin is as powerful it might develop slower since there's no need to try out other builds.

Do you think everyone can afford to play safe against july every single game? No, because he will macro you to death if he knows you are playing safe.

Cheese requires just as much skill as a long macrogame. Don't get me wrong, I do really hate cheese and would love to play only macro games and I try to do so, but I have to admit that cheesing is not easy.

Ofcourse everyone can put a stupid cheese and try to win, but actually well thought out cheese with clever positioning of a proxy building or even hiding and faking stuff is really tricky. Its not an easy thing to do and requires a good read and grasp on the game.

That being said, yes, I do agree - you should be able to play a straight and solid game as well as a tricky / cheesy game to be less predictable.

It actually doesn't matter how strong one race is in some stages of the game. If Zerg can't reach lategame because of imbalance or disadvantages there's no point in not adjusting the game. Ofcourse you have to take into account the Korean players.

Ofcourse NesTea with his individual skill makes for good games, but most Zergs for example still suffer and die easily. You have to take a look into the proscene, but do not take a few examples out of there that are probably outstanding.

If both races have even chances of reaching all stages of the game you can begin adjusting the strength of different units and aspects which will lead to hopefully - just the lategame. As in nerf broodlords in damage output etc.

I understand what you mean I think, but I still don't think I agree with what you are saying. And I do also hate TvZ Lategame. :o! I can imagine on absolute highest level TvZ 25+ will lead in insanely close games, as Zerg is sick powerful, but Terran with good control and upgrades as well as bases can make good use of the ghost.

2-3 weeks after I left I said that I refuse to give the Intel hardwares back until I have received the salary that they owe me (it was already 1 month late, like every month) so the main manager raged and threatened me of Intel sueing me etc etc and said they will never pay it. I agreed to give the intel hardwares back when intel connected me via Email and sent an ups to get the stuff.

Every month they gave 20 different dates when salary is going to come :DDD "I go to bank tomorrow morning" "we send it on wednesday" "it comes in 5 days" "today bank close french holiday" .

When I joined virus I knew it would end pretty soon cos it was a horrible organisation, I just did it for the money. But it was pretty stupid since I basically lost all of my motivation to practice while I was in Virus but who cares its only life. I feel sorry for every player in Virus and even for some managers too, some of them were nice, dont get me wrong, e.g. shiba, illu, soonmaniac etc but the Main owner/main manager of the team was a scumbag.

Yeah. It's actually okay for me, cuz when I did my 11/12 2rax, my rax would finish a few seconds before 14th SCV, and I had to cut either scv or marine production for a couple seconds to make supply. Now it will all be fine :O

It's a fun style, but you are definitely overestimating it. A good zerg w/ turtle infestor play (or, honestly, mutas work too to stop drops...) will rarely lose to this. It really doesn't work well unless you can get an advantage with a timing push before he gets any mutas or infestors/bane speed finished. You can tell me it does all you want, but the fact is that you are wrong if you are playing someone good. I used to use this style allllll the time.

Making marauders makes it a bit more durable vs Infestor play though. Your claim that Infestor play loses straight up to drops is simply untrue - it does not take many infestors to turtle, he will only have problems if he tries to move out too much.

A bit of water for the fire in the belly of the 'Stephano is killing eports' crowd.

Think about the discrepancy between the actors in power, knowledge and experience. Both in the particular and in the general. Stephano is 18 years old, just out of high school. He's a french speaker first, and knows english as a secondary language. After recent succes in SC2, he's contacted by a host of teams trying to sign 'the next big thing'.

He's now put in a situation where he has to negotiate his first professional contract by himself. This contract is negotiated in english and written into an english language contract. The team trying to hire him is represented by a lawyer. He is not so himself. Any questions he has are explained to him by representatives of the team trying to hire him. Negotiation happens over the internet with Stephano being in france/tunesia and the team trying to hire him in USA. The signing of the contract happens through a specialized internet-site.

So, who has the power? True, Stephano has the power of being the one with the talent. He decides where to take it. But who has experience with negotiating a contract? Who has the legal understanding of the implications of the contract? Who can understand the legalese of a contract? Who is a native speaker of the language of the contract and of the negotiation? Who has/is the lawyer?

The team. In this case its compLexity, but really this goes for almost all negotiating sitautions between players and teams. The situation heavily favors the established teams. In this situation, Stephano has to trust that what complexity tells him is said in the contract, is actually what is in the contract. He doesn't even have the opportunity of reading the contract in his native language.

But from the players perspective, it gets worse. Because while before the contract is written, stephano at least has the power of talent, once he signs a contract, he is out of luck. Why? Because he has no realistic way of recourse in case of a miss-represented contract or breach of the contract. What is he supposed to do? Threaten legal action against complexity? On the other hand, it may/may-not be that complexity is willing to pursue this issue in a court. That is, because of his digital signature/pressing a button on an internet-site, he faces consequences that was probably not talked about before the signing of the contract. I can't say that for sure, because maybe complexity explained to him the consequences of a breach of contract (in complexitys opinion, that is), or a change of mind, and in any case the repercussion may be stated in the contract he can't read.

What I'm trying to say is this: Though at first hand it may not seem so, legal contracts are in fact only to the advantage of the teams, not the players. When signing the contract, realistically, the players rely on the goodwill of the teams in truthfully representing the content of the contract to the player. In case of a breach on the contract, only the teams have the power and means to take legal action. Certainly so internationally. Players can only really rely on word of mouth as to whom to trust.

Now, I don't mean this to be an excuse for the actions of Stephano, though I think it's very understandable to be confused and impulsive at 18. I don't think the actions of anyone involved are showing anything beside self-interest. And though complexity may hold the legal high ground (although maybe not), I don't see much in the cancellation of a 12-hours old contract that is written in english, which signs an 18 year old frenchman with no legal representation, whose domain of legal jurisdiction is unknown, apparently without meeting in person (and yes, I think when you sign an 18 year old from another continent to a full time contract, you ought to make the effort to go and see them) to be morally outraged about.

This is a good post. I think too many people bash on Stephano here, without knowing how it is as a player who has to decide/negotiate with teams...

I don't know how you talk as if those games somehow vindicate your comment ad-hoc. Your comment on Lucifron can only be vindicated if you knew about his recent skill/performance. If that were the case, then sure your comment is more than justified. If you did not know much about Lucifron's skill and made that comment on some vague memory from the beta (or worse, his WC3 background) then you simply got lucky, nothing more.

Whaaaaaaaaat? Unless Lucifron had gotten extremely good without making any waves that reach me, which has not happened yet and would be very odd, then that tells me all I need to know about DRG playing a ZvT. You are focusing too much on Lucifron when my job isn't to evaluate Lucifron, it's to evaluate the matchup DRG vs Lucifron. Of course, part of that is evaluating Lucifron. But because DRG ZvT is such an extreme, I only need to ask myself, do I think it's probable that Lucifron is top 5 TvZ player in the world (including Koreans)? No? Fans' money and attention could be used more efficiently to make a better product for them to enjoy and to put money/benefits in the pockets of people who deserve it (like MKP). As it is, fans have to resort to deciding for themselves and giving the money directly haha. Which is awesome, it really shows the passion and support of our community, but hopefully the industry can find a way to use business and economics to automate this process efficiently.

Thanks and keep up the good work.

I think you might have some formatting issues starting from Jinro. Otherwise this is good work.
