Forbes recently conducted an interview with Sheth. Excerpt:
Team Liquid’s Shawn “Sheth” Simon has been playing Starcraft since a very young age. He’s risen to the top of the Starcraft II ranks in eSports and is currently referred to as the nicest guy in pro gaming. Sheth is an American Zerg player who’s a regular in Major League Gaming’s Pro Circuit. He’s taking part in the first-ever MLG’s Global Starcraft 2 Invitational and will also be competing at the next MLG Pro Circuit tour stop in Orlando October 14-16. Sheth took some time to talk about eSports, streaming practices on TwitchTV, and weighs in on the Korean pro gaming landscape and how he sees things expanding in the U.S. over the next decade in this exclusive interview.
How did you get started in eSports?
Ever since I was 9 years old,I’ve been playing Starcraft Brood War. At first it was simply to play with friends and then it was just to have fun with others online. This was the first time I’d been able to interact with people I’d never met in real life via the Internet. I absolutely loved it. Ever since then I’ve simply enjoyed being a part of the SC community and then part of eSports.
What are your thoughts about how eSports has grown since then?
I never imagined it would turn out like it did. I always imagined it staying somewhat of a small group of people who knew each other a little. (That was how it was in SC1) With SC2 it’s turned in many ways into a casual game, or at least a game with many more players involved. At first I was unsure how this would affect me, after all I wasn’t used to having to compete with so many people. However, I found out that you can simply find a small group of people and stick with them. All of this growth in the scene has added a lot of money into the game. That’s what allows me to play SC2 full-time as a job. My thoughts on this? I absolutely love it.
