I was thinking last couple of days which direction im going in SC2 in general..My SC2 day starts with browsing forums, playing some team games to "warm up" watch some VODs which just delays my 1v1 practise and waste time on things I shouldnt be doing if I wanted to be top player. I asked myself, where am I going with this? Im not practising seriously, I play maybe 5-10 1v1 games per day and there are days where I just play 2v2 whole day without playing any 1v1 games, but on the other hand im not casual gamer either because I spend a lot of time doing SC2 related stuff even if its not playing 1v1.
In the past I had doubts in myself being a good player, I started thinking about some players that stream on TL for 6+ hours a day which I beat very easy once we play, I practise (when I actually do play) with one of best players in EU, I have one "main" practise partner for each race which are Kas, Socke and MorroW. While they put up really good results in tournaments.. I dont, last 6 tournaments I played, I got second place in 5 of them which was very disappointing for me. I always thought I have reached my limit in skill and that playing only few games a day will keep me on that level and never thought practising 8 hours a day and improving every day more and more, which should be around 32 games a day which is depending on day 3-6 times more games than I play now.
My decision between quiting SC2 and actually starting serious practise is very clear for me now. I will practise minimum 8 hours a day for two weeks in order to improve myself as a player.
Reason im writing all of this in here is because I need to set a goal before I do something in SC2 or IRL, after I set my goal I put 100% dedication to it. My previous goals were to re-claim #1 in GM (was #1 GM last season for some time) but that took me only couple of days to complete, second goal was making very high win streak on both ladder and tournaments which ended in 43 win streak = 13 wins in tournament and winning it and 30 ladder 1v1 win streak. My current goal is to not "fail" at playing minimum 8 hours a day and keeping up with the schedule I gave to myself for two weeks and writing all of this here will keep on me right track so I dont quit because as soon I post this I will have obligation to finish what I started. That being said, this will be my 3rd goal and once I complete it, it doesnt mean I will just quit or go back to not practising hard like before, but taking step by step is the way to go or should I say bit by bit (prime)
I got motivated to do this by Yellow and his Code A project, MVP as a player and Marineking due to me having..a lot of second places - last 6 months I have 27 second places in tournaments (some not listed in TLPD) because feeling of being good enough to reach finals but being bad enough at same time to not win whole thing is very very disappointing.
Anyway, enough talk Practise schedule will be next:
Minimum five days a week, as soon I get up in the morning I will work out, take a shower, eat and start my practise for that day. Playing SC2 from: - 14:00 - 17:00 CET - 1 hour break to rest and do stuff at home - 18:00 - 23:00 CET
All of this will be streamed every day unless something comes up IRL, but I will make sure to update if schedule changes. I will update every day and put my win loss for the day and maybe even win loss vs each race for that day. If you have any questions feel free to ask here or on stream.
I hope other good players read this and try doing it themselfs. There are many talented players in SC2, but they are just lazy like me
Sorry for wall of text and thank you for reading it I hope you have fun watching if you do tune in and I promise you I will give my best.
Training will start on Monday, September 19th.
TLDR: 1) I am dissapointed in myself with my play and results 2) I want to improve and put time and effort into it 3) Will be streamed and will be updating results.
Day 2 went much better than first day, I cant say im in GOD mode already but I already see some improvements my average APM for example in all those 31 games together increased by 40 compared to week ago (using sc2gears). So practising 5-6 more times than before indeed does make you better player, who would guess
Day 3 went weird kinda, still figuring the patch changes, rax timing is different now, cant say I played good or bad but a lot of people including me are trying different stuff looking forward to day 4.
Today was one of those days that doesnt fin into "5 days/8 hours of playing" , had some stuff do to IRL so played only 16 games today and it went okay today - day 5 going 8 hours again!
Day 5 went pretty good, sad that I lost TvP due to one single missmicro vs void ray allin, but still day 5 went pretty good, tomorrow I will be playing FXO International KOTH, see you there
Day 6 went pretty good, played international koth and did okay with 3 kills - met a lot of 5g robo immortal allins today its getting popular Day 7 many tours incoming!
Didnt expect to do this bad on day 7, days before went much better, might be due to patch or might be just because I played very bad, looking forward to day 8!
Day 8 went okayish I think I need to change up my TvT, been losing a lot lately - playing bio can be too risky sometimes BO wins can happen Overall was okay day my TvP improved a lot which was my worst MU before.
Went pretty good today, my TvP improved a lot last couple of days, as far as TvT goes got new build beat KR T today so I guess the build is fine (isnt cheese ) and got 3 losses in TvZ, one to Nerchio, one to Sheth (practise bo5 won 3-1) and one on ladder that I just played bad.
I havent played many games on day 10, I did showmatch vs Dignitas Killer which I won 5-2 and did only a few games, this was my first day to take a real break from practise. Sorry for late update
Today I played some cg's with Kiwikaki and Morrow, both went well and 90% of games I played on ladder I met some good players so im happy with today's results Tomorrow will be streaming a lot and on saturday/sunday im @ WCG qualifiers!
Today's practise went really good, I played tournament and won that one as well and last 3-4 days I won showmatch, WCG qualifiers and now tournament, I think I broke the KONG LINE!
Made a lot of mistakes on day 16, lost to 4g but thats due to my stupid build that I did and as far as TvZ goes I played risky and with bad scouting, overall day was good.
I had some stuff to do irl in the morning and evening so didnt play much on saturday, played only ESL sennheiser tournament which I won so day went good but not many games
Sunday the tournament day! Decided to play go4sc2 and it went pretty good, won the go4sc2 too and had pretty good tournament win streak last couple of days.
Cool thing ! I really appreciate your motivation + I clearly understand how hard can be to always be the 2nd. But 2nd place is eaxctly about this. Even if its dissapointing it pushes your limits and motivates you to reach the No.1 Spot!
I'm sure many people will cheer for you during your new schedule and I wish you Good Luck for your future tournaments and may your skill get mixed with luck from now on !
Good luck man, hope it goes well for you. I never understood this 2v2 to warm up thing. There's no surer way to warmup fast than playing a 1v1 as your first game of the day and getting SLAMMED anyway!
Good luck man!! You're a fantastic player and you will be absolutely dominating if you practise well. Maybe you can find some hardworking SC2 pros and train with them everyday? Mixing in with the irght crowd helps a lot
The thing about this game is the harder you work at this game, the more you'll have to show for it. Hammering out ladder games is one thing, but the best of the best work on having really solid play, and I think most importantly come tournament time, really study their opponents' games to look for weak spots in their game. Not having talent is something lazy people say to detract themselves from realizing they're not putting in the work that the best do =) Good luck!
No matter what someone tells you, the fact you went out and told yourself to do this, as well as helping us keep you accountable, makes you a great player in itself. You will undoubtably find results.
Keep in mind the best way to practicing isn't always just bludgeoning out games like a mad man. Take some time to think about the game and apply it. (If you want to theorycraft on stream, that would be mad sick for a player like me to get insight into your thoughts about metagame n stuff).
I wish you the best of luck, and look forward to seeing you at future tournaments in top 8.

I am not a FAN of you, I dont hate you, i dont love you. However I am very glad to see you are going to practice 8 hours just as a sc2 player seeing someone dedicated to the game like that always makes me feel special and why do i feel that way I cant explain. So I wish you GL and will pop in your stream just for the fact you are going to practice 8 hours a day. It is rough I have tried to do this on many levels and it works out the first day great then I fall off and get lazy the 2nd day. It must be rough having all them 2nd places but at the same time 2nd place is nothing to grumble about in fact it is very very good to get there. I wish you luck and hope you do well.

Am, lets think about it for a sec shall we ? How can a 15 year old have 8+ hours a day while spending 1/2 a day in high school (its September)?

hehe same thing, he still has like 1-2 years to fuck around until real life comes and rape everything
Do you even understand what you are saying? He's in his 20's
He is already in "real life"
Why do you even post if you're not going to think beforehand? Team Liquid is more about intelligent communications, if you want to troll or be stupid go somewhere else.
I've always seen your name on a lot of the replays on http://www.sc2-replays.net/en/replays/ and when I see your name I never download your replays. I think your account name has always turned me off for some reason. However goodluck and I will download some of your reps in the near future.
Maybe the patch will come tuesday beastyqt so you can start fresh with some new strats maybe?
I'm really looking forward to this Beasty! I've been watching your stream for a long time. I would eat lunch watching your stream in between classes at college. It was almost routine for me. Anyhow really looking forward to you going into hero boss mode!

Like some others said, I really like that your posting to make sure you go thu with this. I find my self sometimes not fully committing to stuff unless I have other people knowing my goals, who would call me out on it. Best of luck, we shall be watching!!
Ive always been a huge Team Empire fan, so hearing that an Empire player is kicking it up a notch is good news! This is almost inspiring enough for me to dedicate myself to practicing more 1v1. Anyway Empire HWAITING!!!
I hope you realise the amount of people that would love to have your talent/potential to make money off this game and play at the pro level. I'm glad to see you committing to improving as a player and best of luck in doing so.

You're right, but that's not the whole story. Doing it for 2 weeks is a good goal to set because that's typically how long it takes to form a habit. http://ergonomics.about.com/od/ergonomicbasics/f/form_good_habit.htm That doesn't mean that you can't revert or eventually burn out because of too much SC2, but typically if you do something for 2 weeks straight, you become accustomed to it. That means it will be a lot easier to keep doing something like playing SC2 for 8 hours/day.
Try it for something like working out. For the first week it will seem like a big chore, but by the third week you'll probably be set.
Unless he literally just means that he's going to play this way for 2 weeks and then immediately begin playing 2s again, etc. In which case, yea, it isn't enough time.

Yeah I wasn't clear on whether he was just going to stop again. But assuming your statement, continuing on after shouldn't be as difficult.
What I am curious about is what you did before you started to grind sc2 games, or maybe in the middle of it.
Did you have a job? Was there some reason why you couldnt play? How was your life being supported while you were trying to improve in sc2 ? This is one of the main questions a lot of "casual" players ask when they question whether they even have the smallest chance of being a competitive pro gamer in sc2.
Good luck man! It's nice to see that even the well respected great players still have their problems. This is really encouraging to many lower level players to see that even the kind of players they idolize have troubles they need to get over.
I hope you meet your self imposed requirements and crush FACE in the next tournaments you enter!
Love your initiative. Will try to watch your stream as often as possible. I actually don't believe you when you refer to your twitter. Your last tweet was 4 months ago but feel free to surprise me. :p
Btw if you will reach all your goals and the two weeks "project" is over - what's the plan for the weeks and months afterwards? I'm sure you already have something in mind here to not get back to your "lazy" training schedule. :o
Good luck! btw Any plans for some offline tourneys in the future?
On September 17 2011 12:03 SKTerran.117 wrote: are you the same guy from arena junkies?
jw, looking forward to seeing more of your stream
Most definitely is, atleast the guy on AJ posted a lot in the SC2-forums on there and had a sc2sig with a high ranked terran in it if I remember correctly!
On topic: GL Beasty, will tune in to your stream and see how it's going!
Hey there beasty! Most probable u wont remember me but in ladder we have played from time time when my MMR was higher
I recently tried 9 days to play more than 10 hours a day and i played for 8 days a net gaming time of (thanks to sc2 gears) 6 hours 20 minutes average including practice games with my terran partner (i am zerg) memphis and 1v1 ladders and tourneys. It makes 32 games (since zerg and probably i am more vulnerable to early game aggression) average.
One thing i can say is give more breaks, sc1 and sc2 korean players even give more breaks, maybe you can play 8 hours but do it like 3-3-2.
For me things didnt go well, i only got round 6 in GO4sc2 beating notables like only ESC.Jaxx..
And please dont forget that only 2 weeks training mayb would not put you ahead of all europe because all european progamers also playing in a such schedule. Think about jinro playing 12 hours for 3-4 months and sometimes he plays not very good in televised games, sometimes he plays like a god (vs fruitdealer, such multipronged attacks).
good luck with ur challenge i hope you'll become best euro terran and start winning both, big online and offline tournaments looking forward to meeting you at WCG Qualies ;> also, gonna enjoy the stream from time to time! gl and hf!
beasty ? :D I haven't read the name of the topic starter first... if you can afford the time to prac at least 8 hours per day... why not. some ppl will judge you irl, saying "find a gf" , "get a job" but it's only a matter of time before everyone understands that you can be a high-earner in sc2. gl hf. i like serbia , got one friend from there.
I dont understand how he can be like ' well I'm just going to play for 8 hours a day for two weeks now, and if it helps me im going to keep that schedule.' Is money not a problem for him or so? Basically he doesn't need to work, but would if he cant become a topnotch player? I wish I had that luck aswell. GL Beasty on your way to being 'the European Terran'.
Beasty keep fighting and you will be the Djokovic of Starcraft.
What made Djokovic good this year? He specifically said - his confidence in himself improved greatly after the Davis Cup victory in 2010, and this followed through into his practice schedule. Likewise, you must have confidence and a practice plan, and in no time you will be smashing Federers and Nadals like Djokovic.
Good luck mate!
Edit: The other thing you can do is watch Strelok's ambitious terran video about a hundred times. Who cares that it's Strelok, far out, that accent and sheer strength of will makes me want to go pro.
Really good to see! I think if you can do 2 weeks of hard training, you'll then find it easier to do a month, then maybe 2 months, then maybe even more hard training. Hopefully you'll get to the point where you find it easy to play loads. GL!
Sorry for this I am sure many have repeated it, I've played many years at very high level in several different games - one thing I've noticed
There is a world of difference between Playing the game and Practicing the game.
Practice as we know is the hard one, winning or losing doesn't matter, its the fine-tuning, the analysis of each replay, e.g. the same map against the same opponent over and over, tweaking a certain strategy. If you can find practice partners at a high enough skill level who are interested in this tough regimen then its good (simulating what they do in team-houses in Korea)
Playing the game is "relax" time, the ladder.
I know we all know this but just to repeat, Koreans are better because they do more of the first one, to a higher harder more grueling level.
For motivation compare yourself a few weeks ago with how you are getting with the constant 8 hour practice. The old you vs the new you
Again sorry for all these cliches, but it holds true in any sport or game. Practice, analyze, improve!
I'm quite sure that he can live comfortably in Serbia with the money he earns by SC2, so he like has quite good chance to become really top gamer since he doesn't need to do anything else beside playing sc2 gogo! win go4sc2 :D

inuh maybe? He is korean but he doesn't have korean training so he was probably not talking of him edit : apparently Phoenix is in a german team and is currently living there so maybe some other koreans are here too!
Good luck bro! You can do it! I envy players like you or Stephano who made it into GM easily and can stay there like its just a small hobby while I sit in plat for half a year now and it kills my fucking motivation! I really tried to get into Diamond but Im not making it :/ Its nice to see that someone who is at the top is still reaching further to find places nobody else found before! And I know your potential because I watched your stream quite a while.
I'm thinking of doing something similar once I graduate college. I'm in diamond with VERY little practice so I think if I go 8 hours a day for a month I can climb up there fast...
Sometimes you are blind for your own mistakes. Sure you have your practise partners which might tell what they thought went wrong but often thats not enough. I suggest you to get someone who is good enough to analyze your replays/games to find your mistakes to reach your full potential. Keep up the good work you are already a beast! See you in ladder
Good luck! I think that if you can follow the schedule you have made for yourself it will make it a lot easier, so you won't burn out as easily compared to if you would just practice 24/7
honestly beasty you are an awesome player you are way underestimating yourself elfi said in an interview after qualifying for IEM that he is a lot better now that because he is more confident. be more confident! you are one of the best european players out there and you should be aware of that! i wish you the very best and i hope for you that you can win some tournaments! i know you can do it! you know that too! GO BEASTY!

Thats really motivating Hope u can keep up with your practice schelude.
I think it's important to separate overall success with how you personally view your success. 5 2nd place finishes in 6 tournaments is actually very good, but you don't want to settle for 2nd place...which is understandable.

Awesome, great to see the good players try stepping their game up. Gl
Edit: Can't believe I missed this for so long, but yer nice to see you've already started and seen some success. Just keep doing what you are doing and don't go into the trap of "ok ive improved enough"
Love watching you stream. The way you defend against all-ins/cheese is mind-boggling.
However, you seem to be too hard on the people that all-in against you, even if you win. These strats, while risky, are a part of the game. They're even seen at high-level tournaments since they can be very viable options in certain states of a BOX series against certain players. There's no need to try and make random ladder folk feel bad about the way they played a game.
Look forward to continue watching your rise to greatness. I wish some of the other players I'm a fan of practiced as much as you.

When you using ladder to improve a later part of your play it's rather annoying to get all ined constantly since that only tests one aspect generally. Ladder shouldn't really be about getting the win so badly that you have to resort to these things ;(

Ladder is about whatever you want to do, not what you want other people to do to you. Learning how to do an effective all in shouldn't be limited to custom games simply because "ladder is supposed to be macro".
This is a great way to get more fans. Two of the reasons Boxer is so revered is because of how hard he works and how deeply he cares about the game; show us your passion!
Keep at it, you have great skill and its great watching you reach your potential!
I like your ambition. It's motivating, for sure. I want to make a serious practice schedule, and just grind games. I like the idea of keeping a notebook to keep track of things...

Hey Beasty, just get an authenticator - you'll never get hacked again. The app for smart phones is for free (http://mobile.blizzard.com/en/t401-c12864/-battle-net-mobile-authenticator) but there is also a small token available (http://eu.blizzard.com/store/details.xml?id=221004517) for your keyring or whatever.

Nice, keep up the good work. Personally not a fan of basketball but the message applies to anything really. Yes, the guru story is originally related to Socrates, Aristotle or Plato, can't remember which.
lol, I saw you posted a speech but it had dwayne wade on it, I was then going to look for my favorite speech, but before I did, I clicked the video, it's the same dam speech about the guru. Very inspirational!!!
How bad do you want it? are you willing to sacrifice sleep? food? family/friends? time? everything you love and think life is about and needed to be comfortable is exactly the things you have to sacrifice sometimes to be the best.
When you want to be successful as bad and you need to breathe/sleep, then you will hit the breakthrough.

So much respect for you Beastyqt , I recently started to play minimum 2 hours each day, I would play more but I got College to do .. anyways gl in the future to becoming the best
So from this its pretty obvious my TvP improved a lot TvZ pretty much stayed same, while TvT droped little bit but I feel TvT is my weakest matchup so I will have to work on it!
I read this thread some time ago (I didn't see the name of the OP at first so I was surprised to read something like "beating people streaming 6hours when I meet them, I was wtf this guy isn't an unknown? then I looked upon and saw Beastyqt, remember you from an aAa interview).
And this sunday when I was waiting for an IPL match to start (yeah I guess one hour for a bo3 pvp or zvz is a bit too much lol), I started watching the go4sc2 and saw that you were in the final! I didn't see the entire serie but I was hoping for you that you will win, since 2nd place is so... (I'm an MKP fan you know XD). Nice to see that you won this go4sc2 and some other cups!
I wish I could watch his stream to see his progress, it's on right now but I'm capped. I remember waaaay back thinking beasty was a baller but then he kind of vanished for a bit (or so it seemed to me), it's good to see him making a comeback, nice results recently!
