A long time ago around at the beginning of last summer I was a high gold player who was having a lot of trouble because his pet builds weren't working all that well anymore and he was actually having to try to use real builds occasionally and learn to play lategame a little bit. I was very frustrated with the game and decided that as soon as I made platinum I would stop laddering.
Thus with the scene set I head into a pvp close air on Shattered Temple. Being in gold we both do a sloppy 4 gate, which I had just learned since my pet build was a 3 gate robo and he comes out slightly ahead. I tech to colossus and turtle on one base and he tries to counterattack with a bunch of gateway units, expand, get a twilight council, tech to colossi and upgrade all at the same time.
After some minor skirmishing in the front of my base where he loses a few units for free, my main is about to be mined out and I push with 3 colossi, range, all the gateway units I have left, an immortal or two, and last but certainly not least, all of my probes. I somehow manage to forcefield his units back between his nexus and mineral line and his focus fire comes out 2 stalker shots away from killing a colossus, and I go on to destroy to his natural base.
In my glorious victory I was congratulated with a hearty "wtf, who all ins?" and as I waltz into his main he leaves with a cheerful "noob" in what I shall forever remember as the battle of the pro-ballin' probe all-in. Of course, I came out of that game with a huge grin on my face, a promotion to platinum, and resolution to stop playing that would last a few months while I became more into watching streams.

First placement matches match 5: (back in July 2010) 2gate zealots --> BM the opponent for his gas steal --> forge --> 1 cannon near my front (no wall) --> cannons in smoke at back of main (metalopolis) --> robo --> get 2 base baneling busted --> stargate --> collosus/void ray with 0/0, no collosus range, no void speed --> take natural expansion.
Then I won because he went 2 base mass hydralisk (this was like at the 22 minute mark).
I got silver, placing me ahead of my then-bronze rival.

Finally got promoted to Masters. Quite happy about it as I've been rank 1 diamond this entire season...at this moment I can say that I am top 8 and ranked higher than Thorzain's NA account...til he plays most on it. (Its a new league!)

Started as bronze and then worked my way up to silver and then gold in season 2, lost my placement match for season 3 but got placed in platinum anyways. Havnt been able to play for a while though.

I've started in silver. After season 2 I took a pause from playing and started watching streams. I was watching mostly tournaments, then started to watch for example TLO, DeMusliM and other pro Terrans first-person streams. I've learned builds, decision making and other stuff. Thanks to the fact I play guitar a lot, I didn't have problem with executing it as my APM is high enough. I came back at the end of season 3 and managed to get to platinum. Season 4 I wasn't playing too much and stayed in Platinum, but at the beggining of Season 5 I've advanced to Diamond and now I am 25th in my division, with 62% win ratio, but I still don't have too much time to play (only 52 wins by far). But with the end of April, I'm finishing school, so then I will be able to play more and get to Masters or maybe even Grandmasters

Placed in Silver after doing a roach rush build a friend taught me. Dropped to Bronze after losing a bunch of games, since I stopped roach rushing after my classmate said it was dumb, and I got discouraged and stopped playing for a while. During ladder lock, I realized I just need to practice more to get the hang of things, so I worked hard to get the promotion in the next season's (3, I think) placement match. I lost the match, but promoted into Silver anyway. Then I got sucked into custom games, and during Season 4's ladder lock, I got my own account*, stuck to customs and team matches, and went on to place in Gold for season 5.
* I was using another friend's account, since he never wanted to play again after some DT-related trauma during team matches. He hadn't played any 1v1 quickmatches.

I didn't get into Grandmasters this season because I didn't play as the league came out, then it locked, I was pretty mad but recently I got into gm after going on a 16 game winstreak, and I'm really happy about that!

Season 2 reset happened. I went on a 34 game win streak, was getting matchup against high platinum and low diamond players. I get to league promotions in one day, after a few days of letting my mmr balanced out I get placed back in platinum.

Masters and grandmasters league wasn't around in Season 1.
Now for my story:
Bought game at midnight release, didn't get into beta or ever play SC1 but I was VERY excited for the game.
After my 50 practice league games I got placed into gold and was thrilled, after many games I unforunately dropped back down to silver. Many wins later though, gold was mine again and I was happy, I practiced a lot and soon enough came plat, and then the beloved diamond league all in season 1.
Being happy with my new league I grew scared of 1v1s only doing 20 or so a season and just playing 4v4s and 2v2s.
Finally I decided to get really into 1v1 where I am now, I made an account on the Korean server, then went back to the NA server and dominated everyone in diamond, had a 70%+ W/L overall 90% vs T my best match up. Things were great.
Alas though, I started failing hard, my confidence dropped, I grew depressed and my ranking plummeted to around a top 25 diamond level. Pretty much where I'm at now, slowing recovering.. Slowly..

Master league WAS around for Season 1, it was released January 15, 2011, while Season 1 ended March 22, 2011. However, you're right about Grandmaster league, it was introduced a week after Season 2 started.

Recently got promoted to 4v4 masters. I started the day at #3 in my diamond division. After some wins and some losses, I got up to #1. I then won 14 straight games. NO PROMOTION. I then lost 5 straight games and won 1, and got promoted. Very weird.

I have a friends that I play and talk about starcraft with all the time, and we were on skype laddering a few weeks ago, and he got promoted to diamond one game, and when I won my game i got promoted into diamond into the same division.

My favorite placement match story is back from beta:
I played Toss at first and wound up in copper league (Yes there was something under bronze). Anyway, after getting depressed a bit I decided to try and get my act together and go for a higher league. So after a few weeks of playing and countless placement matches(For those not in beta, every time a new patch came out you had to redo placement matches). I was able to go up to silver(Copper league had been removed and bronze "replaced" it) using zerg. Since then I have taken SC2 1v1s casually due to school and ladder anxiety.
Although recently I found that listening to a Day9 daily while playing helps tremendously.

When i was 100% New to starcraft it went as a total of this::
Gold -> Silver -> Gold -> Plat ----> Diamond ---------> Top 25 master

I went from Bronze --> Silver --> Gold
I'm on the borderline of getting into Platinum, but have yet to do so.
Just beat a few mid to high platinums today after my placement match into gold =) I've been stuck in gold since season one. Feels good now being high platinum :D

Started in Diamond. Then Blizzard made masters and I got into that straight away....
...Then they made GM and I didn't get into that and I was like "Grrrr!"
Been trying to get into that ever since :p
