I'm new here, I like Starcraft 2 and since I'm a visual artist I combined the love with some work. Two classic animations sprouted that are tributes to Husky (who made me buy the game and play a lot more) and Day9 (who made my last winter fun). I hope you like them and do some constructive commenting!

A couple of days ago I've finished my starcraft cgi cinematic, and would really appreciate any kind of feedback. Please, watch in HD, youtube has really messed up the quality.

Not bad at all. U did this using AfterEffects? For my stuff I use mainly Photoshop and Illustrator. Clan VcK SC2 Fan Art Feedback always welcome

This is a logo that I'm doing for CricketStarcraft: This will be a Zealot fighting a pair of Roaches deep behind enemy lines: This is a commission, which will be of a Zergling taking away a Marine's rifle: This is a personal work of Kerrigan tormenting her prey: This will be a Stalker fighting a Reaper: This is a crossover piece. It's a Halo Elite fighting a Zealot. You can see the intial sketch below, followed by some color work: Although it isn't exactly traditional fan art, I have a thread detailing a diorama that I'm constructing in the general forum. Here's a link: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=234913 I hope you guys enjoy my work. Be sure to let me know what you think! - Alty

I have to say, that I literally laughed out loud when i saw your cheese factory I used AE to tweak the details, add explosions and similar special effects, but first I had to create and render all the scenes using 3ds max. This particular animation is rather post-production heavy, 'cause the raw 3d footage has been really rushed (the whole thing is a kind of subproject), thus has left much to be desired. Oh, and I used photoshop to make some of the textures, as well as to paint the background for the dandelion intro . On June 19 2011 14:11 Zargoth wrote: This was awesome! Have u made anything else? Thanks! That's my first finished animation, I only have screenshots from my other works-in-progress, or abandoned projects, but nothing SC-related .

The final rendering took many nights to finish, but it didn't really count .

20 mins per frame in 3ds max?! what kinda hardware are you running this on? I guess you can render your stuff overnight?! I never thought I'd need a good video card for anything other than gaming...

Render time is highly dependant on what is rendered and on what settings. When you're using default scanline renderer to render some simple geometry, it will take seconds. But more advanced engines, like mental ray or vray (my case) produce better results and thus require more resources. Scenes rich in high quality reflections, light sources, shadows, complex geometries, and additional effects like DoF or motion blur can be really painful to render. That being said, 20 minutes per frame is still a bit extreme, and usually can be remedied through proper optimalisation. I just wasn't in a mood to play with hundrets of parameters . And yes, most of the final rendering was done overnight.

At what resolution do you render your stuff? HD or just for youtube? Have you ever worked on a Mac? Their desktops are supposedly good for this kind of stuff. Maybe I'll look into this again when I have better hardware. Right now it's no fun, so I stick to photoshop. And I'm using a laptop, so I can't really upgrade it either.

And I'm using a laptop, so I can't really upgrade it either. For this animation I rendered most scenes at 1280x720, but I intend to increase the resolution for future projects. This calls for better optimalisation though. I've had only a limited contact with Mac computers, they're not really popular here in Poland. Experience with photoshop will most likely prove to be really beneficial if you decide to give AE another shot, since they use fairly similar interfaces. PS skills are also practically a must when it comes to 3d graphics, so polishing them is always a good investment . Not to mention, it's a powerful tool on it's own.

I agree, PS is a good skill to have. And easily applicable to stuff other than SC2 pics. Though I have to say GIMP has improved a lot, too. A few years ago the user interface was so bad that the whole thing was basically unusable, but now it's almost on par with PS. Are there any open source alternatives to AE?

@Ving: very nice effects! Hm, maybe I 'll take a look at After Effects, seems to be a good alternative way instead of using plugins like afterburn ect. anyway, I made two small starcraft cinematics, too. the first one is a few years ago. but currently I work on the second one. this is some kind of teaser: feel free to say what you think, some feedback would be great!
