3. I totally agree with what is in the OP, what is on the line here? If they lose/win these BO3's what happens, what does it mean for them? I didn't hear things like this mentioned at all.
The tournament format is freely available, this is not a valid week one complaint. What would they say? "All of these players are 0-0 because this is the first fucking day of play in the first week of play." I mean theres not really much else they could say; do you want to know how important winning here is? Fun fact: winning is pretty important in a tournament.

Turn on the in-game music (or use that plus the classics from Brood War), better mics...
better casters =[

PAYPAL
I've talked to several who wants to get the season pass but won't because there's no paypal option. Not everyone uses credit cards and it's a shame this is the reason you don't get as much monies as you deserve to up production and make nasl even better.

Where will I be able to see the restream for us Europeans today at 19:00 o'clock CEST?

This is a low cost investment that every caster (YT, Live, etc) should be utilizing. The setup can take a little bit of time, but the result is well worth it, and almost immediately noticeable.

Apparently Gretorp left his job to commentate the NASL, so it makes me feel a bit bad to say this, but I don't think he and InControl work well together. I liked his casting with Day[9] for the Europe vs Asia showmatch series, but there he was purely a color commentator, adding some analysis while letting Sean do most of the talking. It was more light-hearted too: I felt like he's trying to be too professional, trying too hard to point out things on the screen and being excited about them and being accessible to possibly new viewers or people unfamiliar with starcraft. InControl too is just not as amusing as his SotG persona, and I'm not sure why that is. Maybe it'll get better over time, however, and there's enough indication they're going to improve.

NASL needs two casters that have played (or heard of) SC2...
Gretorp seemed to have absolutely nothing accurate/insightful/entertaining to say. If Incontrol didn't talk so much, it would've been even worse. Not only doesn't he give any correct analysis, he mumbles and trails off.
Other than that it looked pretty good. The 480p stream looked just fine and I only experienced slight stuttering at times.

Good constructive critism.....keep it positive and contructive and I'm sure ideas will be taken into consideration.

I thought gretorp did fine i don't know what all the whining is about. And his voice is fine for casting.
- Kept cutting to commercials while the casters were talking after a game. Seems unprofessional and left me kinda like "uhhh what?"
- Microphones need to be adjusted.

Also you need a way to change the resolution on VODs. right now its stuck at 1080p, which renders it basically unwatchable on my netbook when I'm at work =\ People with low bandwidth are also screwed

2.- No 3D portraits
the turning off of 3d portraits is to address the crashing bug that occurs on sc2 right now. just deal with it for now until blizzard fixes it.

Better casters iin my opinion. I'd refer what the TSL has done with Day[9], djWHEAT, Chill and Husky. No offense to iNcontroL and Gretorp but they just don't work well together. Day[9]/Chill would be the best combo for the NASL.

Wheat,
I think they are only applying post-production compression. As I wrote in this post below, which was buried super fast, they need to use Dynamic Range Compression on the live audio.
Maybe I should send this to them directly.
On April 13 2011 23:00 TimeSpiral wrote:[!] IMPORTANT tip about Audio Production [!] ----------------------------------------------------------------------The compression (DRC) is seriously off, and I think I might know why. Layman's explanation of what compression is/does: + Show Spoiler +For those of you reading this that are not familiar with recording and producing live audio, I will briefly describe Compression, EQ, and Noisegates. - Compression (Dynamic Range Compression) is not the same thing as compressing an audio file when you save it as an MP3, or whatever, but is a signal processing effect used to reduce the dynamic range of the waveform. Or, to put it simply, to reduce the difference between the low volume sections and the high volume sections. For instance, without compression you could have low volume sections down at the (1) level, and when the caster yells or gets excited it spikes up to (10) and clips the speakers, sounding absolutely horrible. With proper compression you could compress that range down to (4)-(6).
- EQ stands for Equalize and is the general practice of boosting or limiting the various frequency bands in an audio production, most typically referred to as "lows, mids, and highs." This is what makes casters voice's sound so good, crisp, and powerful.
- The Noisegate is important because you can set the limit in which the audio is not even recorded based on volume level. For instance, you could set the gate to (2) so any sound less than (2) volume is not recorded (shuffling papers, taking a sip of a beverage, dropping something, creaking chairs, etc ...)
TIP: The Compression absolutely MUST be applied to the live audio. It is possible that you're adding compression to the post production, which is fine, you need to do this too, but it is super important that the live audio is compressed before it is recorded. I can say for certain one of the following is true: (1) You are not applying Dynamic Range Compression to the live audio being recorded, or (2) You are not applying the DRC to the live audio properly. The dynamic range in the levels for the finished product were way, way 'off,' to the point where I was babysitting the volume button and cringing during exciting moments because I could hear the clipping. Theory: You want to apply the DRC to the live audio so the waveform that is being recorded has less dynamic range. This way the post production DRC can be used to refine and perfect the waveform (in combination with the EQ settings). If you record the audio without DRC then that is a whole process that is independent of the compression and the post production DRC is going to be somewhat ineffective because the overall waveform has already been produced. TIP 2: If you're not already doing this, I highly recommend using a Noisegate filter also. Not a huge deal, but it will help. TIP 3: I know you guys run practice sessions. Part of this needs to include the audio levels. You need to practice talking at a normal level then yelling out in excitement as loud as you would ever yell during a cast. Tweak the DRC and view the waveform until even with all those variable levels coming from the casters the waveform is still relatively "flat." To the OP - To increase the chances of NASL seeing this message, will you add it to the OP?Disclaimer+ Show Spoiler +I apologize if this is coming off as condescending or belittling. It is not intended to at all. I've been trained in audio production and it has been a part of my life since I was young. If you'd like to discuss these things further, please PM me.

My connection/PC has no issues pulling the 1080p stream, but my ISP is going to have something to say about it with transfer limit caps in place. This cap rate is true for a lot of ISPs in NA and 1080p is a 3Mbps transfer....that's 22.5MB/minute, or, 1.3GB/hr. As it is today, I can't watch the VODs at home without knowing full well I'm going to blow way over the cap which gets ridiculously expensive (upgrading isn't a great option either with the cost).
I am going to be calling them to try to weasel more transfer (without the speed increase) out of them but would prefer I could watch the VODs in 480p which keeps the quality and transfer rates acceptable .

my main complains are that i lagged watching the free stream but earlier in the day i had 2 dreamhack streams open without lag. i figure it only lagged on the free stream but im gonna be watching it till they add a paypal option.
during fights they need to show unit hp more and if their gonna not target any units and just watch a battle, they need to remove the ui so people can watch it better. this actually happened like 10 times, 75% of a battle without targeting any units so the ui was totally unnecessary.
edit out the 'waiting for player' points in the stream, i thought that was one of the biggest reasons to delay the games besides cheating. if you dont edit it out, put the camera on the casters for the entire duration of a player lagging out, dont let the audience see that screen whatever you have to do. dont apologise for it excessively either but if a game lags id recomend just pausing it for a while then editing out that entire chunk of laggy game, maybe with some caster face time to make it look like nothing happened.

My only complaint is I got some sort of issue where the VODs load and play for a while then after an indiscriminate amount of time, just stops loading. I'll let it sit there to buffer and it just WON'T buffer. I'm not sure if anyone else is having this problem, it seems to run better on Chrome than the other browsers but seems like it might be a Flash thing. I'm not sure. If any one can help please PM me or reply to this post.
Paid the $25 but haven't seen more than 3 min of content yet because of the above problem.
Technical difficulties of my own aside, the option to see VODs of different quality would be awesome. I didn't mind Gretorp as a caster but I have to agree with a previous post; he was much more entertaining when he was laid back and casting with Day[9], seems a bit uncomfortable and uptight casting with iNcontroL. Just my two cents.
EDIT: Typos.

I'd like to see a little bit of banter GSL style... one thing that makes the GSL so much fun to watch is becasue of Taistless and Artosis, and while thats not something you can just make happen over night, it would be nice to see them lean more towards that.
And thats true of all sport, English National Rugby commentators banter, The BBC's F1 commentators and indeed entire team banter constally, it just makes for a more fun and inviting experiance

I find the NASL stream to be pretty much perfect considering it's just their first season, it can only get better from here tbh

On April 13 2011 11:08 Poyo wrote: Lots of nitpicking here sheesh, I think overall they are doing great.
When you're going up against something like the GSL cast which is highly refined, with 2 casters a 3rd professionally paid observer...people are going to expect you to have all that stuff right out of the box.
Especially when you consider the hype and length of time in development the NASL has had. Being 100% honest the first cast had the feeling of a high school/college play versus Broadway. Sure the actors may be doing an alright job...but the differences in the two are not small they are extremely noticeable.
If NASL's goal as they've stated is to be the premier esports league in NA, they really really need to refine things a lot quicker then they otherwise would have if they started with less hype and smaller. So while it may seem overly critical, when you bill you're thing as the next big thing and put it up on a level you want it to be equal to GSL. Then the production quality needs to be near equal to or better then gsl.
Exact points
-Use the follow unit hot key, the screen many of times was jerky while following armies/units.
-Spent over 10 in game minutes basically just watching and talking about what grubby was doing one game. Completely missed everything moon was doing during that time, magically discovered it later.
-One of the two HAS to be doing play by play, instead of spending both of their time completely focused on analysis and talking about strats etc...one of the two needs to have the focus of 'my job is to watch everything going on now'. Flipping back and forth between bases every time something new enters the production que, following the army movements etc.
-Any tab besides the production tab in a cast needs to be up briefly a comment made about it, and then the production tab should be back up.
-Casters should be careful what they say is 'bad' Example: Saying roaches were a bad response to thors....it's actually 'the' response to terran mech (pre hive). Sure torp and geoff are toss/terran...but if you're a top level caster, you still need to know how all 3 races work in general terms and what is good/bad.
-No background music made the games have very little ambiance during down times.
-Transitions between games felt overly rushed...sure you want a nice smooth transition but it was like game ends 3 comments...BAM new game.
-More hype before the games themselves, talk more about the players, what you expect to happen based on their previous play. This is the type of research casters need to do prior to a days events...you should know how these players all typically play.
