Your vocal chords can only handle so much before something gives. My uncle's vocal chords got so swollen that he was forced to have surgery done, and take over a month off with minimal talking to let them rest so he wouldn't cause even worse damage to his voice. Also, look at Rachael Ray(I know she's terrible but it's an example), she was known for practically yelling on her show and she ended up having to have surgery and taking vocal lessons to help with the damage caused. It's part of any profession where you have to talk like that. Yeah this, most likely also combined with talking loudly (commentating) while having an infection. Smoking might be a factor but hardly the biggest one, know plenty of people who smoke a ton and no one has had any noticeable voice change in that short a time.

There are control techniques one must use in order to preserve their vocal mechanisms when doing things like singing, lecturing, or in this case, casting, on a regular basis. If the techniques are not implemented, or you're using destructive methods, it can wreak havoc on your voice, for real. Additionally, there are certain things you cannot do if you want to maintain optimal vocal clarity and endurance. One of those things is smoking. Obviously this is not a catch all, and you'll see ridiculously awesome singers that smoke, but they are exceptions (Layne Staley comes to mind, of course.) I thought I remembered hearing Day9 mention that his brother was attending a vocal coach to help preserve his voice. I don't recall precisely, but if that is true, that is an excellent move.

He does NOT take drugs. It's just smoking cigarettes. And it is not like he is an addict who has one stuck between his lips all the time. Stop exaggerating things and making a big deal out of nothing. And his voice is so husky and deep not because of smoking (though I make fun of him about it all the time) but simply because he has been commentating for so long. It's called shout-casting for a reason and for a period of time his voice was so evidently strained. TBH Nothing wrong with his voice now. Sure it is different but his voice is still AlmightyTasteless. -No. That kills your voice. Tried and tested more than 3 times. Your voice dies if you are casting the next day and you do Hookah. Plus he doesn't like it lol. Peace.

It's most likely due to multiple factors, and there's no need to isolate just one of them. Yes, long-term smoking will damage your vocal cord and most likely make your voice deeper and hoarse, but it's not always a clear-cut case. There will be people whose voice don't change much even after years of smoking. Same with long-term casting/commentating. Years of speaking loudly for hours each day can change your voice, but there are also plenty of people whose voice don't change. An example is many of those Korean BW casters who have been yelling louder than most western casters for years and still managed to retain their voice. Repeatedly getting respiratory infections can also permanently change your voice for obvious reasons. You could just have a weak immune system or you could not be taking a good care of yourself.

He uses his diaphragm to cast. A method he has also very kindly taught to me. That means he does not damage his throat while he is casting (Most of the time) and that's how most high-level shoutcaster survive... or they wouldof died by now. Good example of casters who uses diaphragm to cast would be TotalBiscuit.

Add several years of this with few breaks and add the fact that his voice was maturing at the same time, it's no wonder he has a much different voice now. Honestly I don't care how he sounds, as long as he keeps being a baller. Tasteless will not answer my question about how to achieve his level of baller-ness. It's very disheartening. But I like his voice now. It's got a lot of character to it.

What she means by this is that they are using a vocal technique that pushes and controls the airflow with your abdominal muscles as opposed to your chest or your throat. Good singers will do this to help preserve endurance, sonic consistency, and maintain proper pitch. Most singers who are untrained will strain their voice A LOT by using improper breathing and airflow techniques by "pushing and pulling" the notes from the chest and throat ... bah. This is too hard to explain :/ *fail*

I'd switch to smoking hookah (no tar and less nicotine than cigarettes) and start chewing Airwaves gum before commentating. Oh man I hope this is an April's Fools post. A hookah session is wayyyy worse then smoking cigs. The amount of smoke you inhale is so much more, and if you think there is no nicotine or tar in there you are mistaken. Also, because it is water filtered, it is NOT healthier. Please look this up on google before you tell more people about this. Hookahs are on par, if not worse then cigs.

![]() I know people who have smoked for 30+ years and their voices don't have the hoarseness (a word?) of Tasteless'. I would guess the reason with Tasteless is just insane amounts of casting with incorrect use of speaking voice. I think I read somewhere that he's taking lessons now to learn the proper techniques regarding how to use his voice so that's a good thing.
