the "talking too much from casting, not from smoking" excuse that tasteless gave last month is BS and nothing but an excuse from a smoker who's in heavy denial (like most smokers are).
consider the following:
1) Tasteless took a very, very long break between BW casting and SC2 casting. yet the first thing people noticed on Day 1 of GSL Open Season 1 was how shitty his voice had become. he had been unemployed and not actively casting for months and months, so surely his voice would have had the proper rest. instead it got worse. i wonder what could possibly have caused it?
2) Pull up a VOD of that GSL Day 1 cast (back on September 4th). Compare it to a recent VOD. has his voice gotten worse in those 7 months of active casting? no. voice degradation from too much talking is clearly not the issue. of course talking that much can't help, but it's clearly not the primary factor at work here. What you haven't consider is that he also did allot of voice over work in Korea besides casting starcraft and I assume that what his job was between his BW casting and SC2 casting.

I'm curious.

Voices traveling from Korea to anywhere else in the world through the internet get distorted a bit. It's called the KR-phenomenon. No one knows why, there are some theories about the Earth's magnetic field affecting the signal but I don't buy it.

smoking for 4 years would change his voice much less than full time casting for 4 years.
|
he said on gom live he doesn't smoke. his voice is just a result of casting for aslong as he has.

It comes from having to talk (loudly) so much for his job. My uncle has the same type of voice. He's an auctioneer who sounds quite similar to Tasteless. Your vocal chords can only handle so much before something gives. My uncle's vocal chords got so swollen that he was forced to have surgery done, and take over a month off with minimal talking to let them rest so he wouldn't cause even worse damage to his voice.
Also, look at Rachael Ray(I know she's terrible but it's an example), she was known for practically yelling on her show and she ended up having to have surgery and taking vocal lessons to help with the damage caused.
It's part of any profession where you have to talk like that.

Does anyone else think Tasteless sounds a lot like Frank Zappa now? If you've heard Zappa's non-singing voice it's pretty crazy how similar they are, right down to the way they pronounce certain words. I think it's awesome personally.

This may be a long shot but i know some people whose voice changed after getting their tonsils removed. I dont know but I really doubt its smoking because ive been smoking for several years now and my voice sounds largely the same. Unless he smokes like packs a day i dont think his voice could change that much.

key word being assume. unfortunately your assumption is wrong.
if you followed his twitter or saw any of the interview videos of him artosis put up on scforall in the period between when gom classic got axed (september 2009; http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=101934 ) and gsl (september 2010), you would know that he was literally unemployed doing nothing. when the sc2 beta came out in spring, that's all he did, and he said so as much on his twitter & interviews. well, i guess you could count peddling his t-shirt website as being self-employed, but that hardly entails any voice work.

Predicting Anytime over Flash & Mind!? o.O Predicting sAviOr to be the one to dominate the group? Calling a group with Much, NaDa and Boxer the "group of death"!?
I think the question is not how long he has been smoking but WHAT has he been smoking... You are assuming that he had the information he would have today back when he made those predictions, I'm sorry but time doesn't work like that

I think the question is not how long he has been smoking but WHAT has he been smoking... Flash wasn't anywhere near as dominant as he is now. He was a decent player infamous for his cheesy wins vs Bisu, but no one would've though he was Bonjwa material. Meanwhile Anytime was pretty much a beast. Seems very reasonable.

As far as I know this was in 2008. At that time Anytime was nowhere near being a favorite against either Flash OR Mind. Anytime was still "ok" but he had his prime in 2006 iirc. Furthermore 2008 was the year of sAviOr's slump. He was not the favorite in this group, and I'm saying that as a huge sAviOr fan.
Boxer in 2008, as much as I respect him for what he's done for the scene, was just plain bad in comparison to his competition. NaDa was a little better, but he too was boasting a 42% win rate in 2008, not what you would call "group of death" material. While Much certainly had his moments, he was never really good over an extended period of time. Apart from that his PvZ was always pretty terrible and he had Jaedong in his grp...
So, defend him as much as you like I guess, but I think I'll stick to my humble opinion that his analysis of those groups was wrong.

its probably a combination of things really
smoking + casting so much for years + age + not enough tea
|
Regardless of the cause, he should see a speech therapist and get advice.
|
I'm really curious what Tasteless drunk Karaoke sounds like now.
|
Wow how can he not predict flash.. That;s a no brainer.. I guess it was a while ago but damn anytime > flash LOL
|
For 4 years of smoking to affect your voice you'd have to smoke ALOT.
|
Tasteless did zero casting for a huge amount of time between BW and SC2. His rasp isn't from casting too much...
I've seen this rasp come from simply smoking in many people IRL. It's not uncommon.
|
Casting/Smoking/Drinking/Age are all probably to blame.
His new voice is perfectly fine, though :/

Anytime made it to the semi though.

Wow didn't know he use to sound like this either, I see some people said he is an avid smoker if this is true I would bet my money it has something to do with it.
