Lefty using only index finger for mouse

I'm left-handed and currently, for historical reasons, I use a right-handed button layout on my mouse. I only use my index finger both for right- and left-clicking, as this is how I learned to do it at home.

I hadn't even considered this might be a problem until I started playing SC2 more, and started to find I wasn't fast or accurate enough with my clicking. I guess a combination of reduced speed/reactions and inaccuracy due to moving my hand position to alternate between clicks as I move the mouse, will be affecting my play. However I don't know how much work it would require to change my mouse work.

My questions are: Do any other lefties have this problem? Do you think it would be worth the effort for me to learn to use my index finger for left-clicking, and middle finger for right-clicking? How much of an improvement could I see?

They make mouses for lefties.

For example - I use a Razer death adder, but they also make left handed editions if you go to the Razer site....

you can try out one of the mice =)

or.. if you like your current mouse - effort is what gets you far, and any effort is worth it.. even if the results are unsavory, there is always some improvement.

http://store.razerzone.com/store/razerusa/en_US/pd/productID.182251700

this is the lefty death adder... but there should be many other mice from other companies as well

hope this helps u

Well I have a wireless Logitech mouse, which is symmetrical, but I decided it was too heavy. So I now have a basic, cheap wired mouse, which is also symmetrical. I haven't considered a left-handed mouse yet though.

I'm a leftie, no issues using the right click.

If you ever want to get good at SC2, you need to start practicing it right now

^ gives forum warnings to people who troll

@ OP you really need to get rid of the habit of using only your index finger, you will never get good enough that way. train your self hard to start using the middle or ring finger for the right click
If you like brood war, please go play brood war and stop whining about SC2

Just start practicing it. It wont take as long as you'd think actually. I have no experience with this exact situation, though with similar ones I've found it's quite easy to grow accustomed to by just keep practicing it and make a conscious decision not to fall back to the old habits.

i think a lefty mouse would be good for you. It will force you to relearn your mouse movements and you can focus on learning it "the right way" then. Also if you relearn it anyways watch teh day9 episode on mechaniks and try to do it the way he suggest. It will take some time but u will experience great improvement.

Also good mouse control makes working on your computer mutch more enjoyable (its a subconsius thing)

plz excuse my horrible english spelling

You should definitely try to use middle-finger more. Think about it - you have half century of using PC ahead of you, you should learn how to use mouse properly. Using both fingers is also useful for other games as well as things like mouse gesture in applications like browsers.

Of COURSE it hampers you significantly! You need to be doing multiple actions per second to play SC well; you don't want to slow yourself down on basic tasks like selecting units or issuing right-click commands.
Units don't counter units. Strategies counter strategies.

Use which ever hand you are most comfortable with holding the mouse in and use 2 fingers on the mouse buttons. I'm left handed and I hold my mouse in my left hand with my middle finger on left click and my index finger on right click.

I have a left handed razer deathadder and it's great, but you don't need an expensive left handed mouse to use a mouse left handed: any symmetrically shaped mouse will do. I would recommend against mice that are shaped for right handed people though; I used to use one in my left hand and it was uncomfortable and caused pain in my hand after long periods of time.

Three things:
1: Get an ambidextrous mouse
2: Use the button layout that's comfortable for you
3: Use two fingers

I read this thread earlier and didn't realize at the time how absurd it is that you're only use one finger. That's not a lefty thing. Yes, it's worth the effort to learn how to use two. Exponential improvement.

I wouldn't listen to these people blindly recommending a left handed mouse for the lefty. My personal opinion is that the keyboard is where I'd rather have my main hand; but beyond that, it's pretty simple to adjust to a left handed mouse but trying to switch your main keyboard hand to the right is painful as hell. If you managed to do it the real advantage would actually be better keyboard usability.

Razer Abyssus, I have one. It's symmetrical on both sides (for left and right hand use), small, acceleration-free (read up on the woes of mouse acceleration if you haven't already), gorgeous (I have the mirror edition) and just overall awesome, cheap too!

razer orochi is what I use, I'm a righty, but it's an ambidextrous mouse, which I'd highly recommend

I agree it is absurd (ha), but I've only come to that realisation after playing SC2. I've always had to use a right-handed button layout at home, and to me it just seems more intuitive to use your index finger for the main function (left-click). Without changing the button layout I'd have had to use my middle finger for the main click, which would have been more strange to me. For the vast majority of tasks outside gaming, this approach was good enough.

Thanks for the replies - it seems I have some practice to do. I played a few games earlier and kept messing up my rally points and buildings, it was quite frustrating!

While we're discussing this, I also happen to be left-handed (rather strongly dominant) but have always used the right handed computer setup. I don't believe it's had an adverse affect on computer gaming, but have there been any left handed players who switched to the left handed setup? Did it eventually help in any way?

I'm a lefty, I keep my orientation for my mouse as "right" handed though, where in I use my middle finger for left click and index for my right click. Doesn't bother me, or impede me. I use a razer copperhead (ambidextrous) and am planning on buying a razer lachesis as my next mouse when I come across my next amount of money (I'm looking at you, tax returns).

I've had this orientation since I've used a computer. I find it best because then when I use other computers, or my friends use mine, it's a matter of positioning the mouse, not switching controls around.

People stopped using 1 finger on their mouse when they invented mice with two buttons. I use all 5 of my fingers on my mouse, index and middle for clicking, 4th and 5th fingers for stability on the mousepad (if you have seen wcg and saw how artosis pinky was extended outwards like that), 4th fingers also presses button 6 and 7 on my Xai, and then my thumb is used to grip, press 4th and 5th button or stability (I come from a competetive CS (cevo p) background so planting thumb, 4th and 5th fingers onto my mousepad while sniping allows me to make subtle movements with my fingers.

i don't know about you mushin,
i posted up first reply.. but I have been thinking....

Do you use your right hand for the keyboard? because I can imagine that to be pretty frustrating, no?

I know lefties who use right handed mice in their right hand, but it's all about comfort I guess...

I mean, maybe you can find a cheap lefty mouse at like Walmart or something of the sort to test it out...... and if it doesn't work out well, just return it the next day :D! lol

I think you need to experiment a little with many options. a lot of people said good things so far..
See what suites you best after experimenting, then practice with what you feel is optimal for your game play experience.

lots of luck to you,
Christina :D

I think the problem normally happens to lefties because they switch the mouse and keyboard positions to use the mouse with the left hand but never quite get used to using the buttons right. It's just something you have to force yourself to do correctly for a while.

Left-handed deathadders are also awesome but pretty much unrelated to the OP's issues.
